Born in Troy,60-90’s was my generation and I had great memories of the city.Sad to say,Troy has seen much better days I do remember so much of it in my 50 years there. At least I grew up in the better Troy times…
Troy is a beautiful city! My father owned a business 1/2 block from our 25 room home on Second Street, Washington Park section. I went to Emma Willard. We had the best shopping up until the Latham Shopping Center opened and people stopped shopping downtown. We had three theaters with 1st run movies each week. We skated and attended hockey games and concerts at the RPI Field House and had pizza at the Red Front, cheeseburgers at Paul's and had awesome parades on every national holiday. People were hardworking and feisty. The South End had the best Half and Half Sandwiches. DeFazio's had Italian imported cheeses and other delicacies. We had meat and fish markets and bakeries. We have one of the best polytechnic colleges in the country- RPI. Our cemeteries reflect the incredible wealth of the industrialists who operated their factories and businesses in Troy. The downtown is not was it once was and the brush, coke and shirt factories have closed, but the city has comeback with a new vibe- the arts and antiques and music scene. We who grew up in Troy will always love it and welcome those who appreciate what potential it holds. Those who minimize or mock it just don't know what they're talking about. We're as tough as any New Yorker and can take it. ( PS Remember Troy is the county seat, which means it attracts those from downstate who cannot or will not work further stressing the tax payers, making it hard to maintain properties.)
The City of Troy has gone through dramatic changes since this video was made in 2007. The area of South Troy has been leveled and razed, the South End Tavern closed quite a few years ago, the downtown are has seen new apartment buildings built up. The Riverfront Park has been dramatically changed with new lighting and seating for concerts as well as new sidewalks, the area across the Hudson River that had the big oil tanks is gone and now has high end apartments, the Rensselaer Inn is now Blitmann for the R.P.I college campus, the Troy Plaza is now Hudson River Commons and has been remodeled
I had the best teen age years of any generation growing up in the 50s and 60s in Troy, New York. It may be old and some sections have really deteteriorated but, I love my home town! The south End Tavern had the best ham on rye, so much ham stacked up you could barely get your mouth around it, plus chips for $1.25 !! Great stuff! Thank you for posting this video.

I think it would be easy to make this sort of a video about any of the cities that actually do purport to be tourist destinations. Troy is not a tourist destination, but that does not mean it is desolate. Also, every place looks bleak in that frozen time between when the leaves fall and when the snow does.
Well, I escaped Troy 12 years ago and it was the best move I ever made. Born and raised there it was a great place to live but the city govt. ruined the city. After the city manager tore down the heart of the shopping district and put up that atrium?
I lived there from 1984 to 1989 while at Rensselaer. I used to take long walks south down the Hudson, cross over on one bridge then walk back north on the Watervliet side. Troy has been undergoing urban "renewal" since at least that long ago. It just never seems to come to anything, because one major college does not a city make. To appreciate Troy, you really have to appreciate history. The city has a certain romance if you know a little about it.
Went to school in troy and spent so much time there. This video was a riot. Obviously people who aren't familiar with Troy wouldn't find this funny, but I find this a riot!

Clever mockumentary, enjoyed the late 80s city promotion video music especially. I lived in nearby Schenectady in 1999-2000, Troy's not so bad - downtown needs businesses and RPI isn't well-integrated. But downtown is filled with European-facade buildings, the neighborhood around Russell Sage College is beautiful and pedestrian - there are probably a good 50-75 blocks downtown that form the core of an urban renewal. @kingkongrichie lol dude troy might not be chicago but go to the wrong place of south troy at the wrong time and you wont tell me it does not share a shit ton of similarities with ghettos..
It is a pity Troy can't quite get it done. The downtown has the appearance of a movie set with it's older architecture, I thoroughly enjoyed studying it. It's a New York river town, of which there are many, and should not have to apologize for it's industry in clear site, but it's blighted neighborhoods need investment and perhaps Troy could one day be much more than what it is now. Troy could be a wonderful destination, unfortunately it's continues to slide.
OK. I did laugh very hard. However, I grew up in Troy, NY throughout high school. Bottom line is there is nice sections and not so nice. Would you rather live in Baltimore, Maryland. Hello Deb3167,I still think the people of North Troy should sell their water to the city, at a fantastic price. The taxes in the "Burg" are double from the city. Downtown got free sidewalks, while we in the Burg, had to pay out of pocket if we wanted new ones. School taxes are also double we pay for the city and the Burg Welcome to The Troylet, The offical home of "Uncle Sap".... Thanks Mr. RPI I got out and I'm here to say - I'm still alive and well.
What the hell is wrong with you putting this piece of crap out there? It's not at all funny. Take some of that negative energy and do something that would bring positive change to the city in some way. Many of us have busted our chops to make things better, and change the perception of the city. Why don't you try doing the same.Obviously you just don't care.
This guy must really love Troy!! you know what they say if you dont like it leave..I been to troy and Most people there are Good..the town is a lot better then he made it out to be..every town (city) has some problems but you deal with it and make the best of the situation..Advise,Run for Ofiice and fix it up!!
I was raised in Troy, and I came back to make my way in the world ... Your video is sophomoric. You obviously don't pay taxes or have any real connection to the community here. My advice: get out of the 8x10 room you're in and strike up a conversation with someone from Troy. You might just learn something about Troy, NY.
I am sure you live in live in Utopia somewhere..your video was insulting and childish. Rather than criticize, try something positive, like just leaving.
I grew up in Troy. My mother moved us to the Eastside (Albia) when I was 8. It was better but there are a-holes everywhere. I moved my kids into the country. A lot better. Still some a-holes. People just cannot get along. It's a lot worse in the city because it's overcrowded.
this is sad, very sad that obviously an RPI student has no idea what troy is like. Troy is an amazing place. turn the camera on your campus if you want to actually see some terrible things.
i'm in NC now and it sucks bad. i'm from buffalo area but want to move around the adirondacks area with a good art scene. i was hoping Troy is cool, who knows
Oh...my...goodness... I know this is a mockumentary, but, but, but....shit. I applied to Rensselaer for a Ph.D. and am ready to retract it or not respond if I am admitted. What on earth is the rest of Troy like?
sous3id92 I see. So, five miles in any direction and views and my human condition improves? I am from a sunny, bike-centered, hip region of the U.S. and would like more or less to keep to that theme. This video tore a hole in my universe. Rensselaer is worse than Troy? You mean the campus is not aesthetic or appealing? I am just looking for a location that is nature oriented, clean, contemporary yet preserves colonial history, and in which safe to live, ride a bike, and jog the corners. My college also has a beautiful campus. It would be nice to transition to yet another beautiful campus. Damn, I am biting my nails now...
Colin Young Just satire, good. Yet I wonder where in Troy these shots are. It's like the movie ``8 Mile'' in some sequences. I don't want to drop a pancreas if I am accepted and show up from a sunny place...
He talking about the city of Reassessed not the university. You want warm and sunny, stay home. If you're from the West Coast, you don't know what hip is. You may want to try an ivy league school.....
Some parts of troy are descent at best. The same goes for downtown...although it is getting slightly better. If the slum lords surrounding campus were kicked out and the rest of the dilapidated homes were fixed to be in descent order this would be a good start. But this is not everything. There really needs to be more options for nightlife downtown. I lived in troy for years and almost never went downtown.
It's pretty funny. You have to have a sense of humor. It's meant to mock the tourism videos that you see. I think it was well done. People may get upset cause the truth hurts. Get over it!
lol hilarious.... You know Senator Roy McDonald.... has a district office there and flies out the back door when his constituents arrive. see video: "Fathers 4 Kids, Troy New York, Senator Roy McDonald"

My advice: get out of the 8x10 room you're in and strike up a conversation with someone from Troy. You might just learn something about Troy, NY.
yea i live in troy 2 and i go to tech valley
I am sure you live in live in Utopia somewhere..your video was insulting and childish. Rather than criticize, try something positive, like just leaving.
THIS IS SO VERY TRUE.. THIS IS WHY WE CALL IT TROYLET LIKE IN TOILET.
you forgot the beautiful Rats
gaz riley might be rats but ur soft
those are not even word
that braught a tear to my eye and that is also why i moved to fuckin IOWA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
its hillarious.
How is it hilarious? Low brow sense of humor?
An article in the New York Times brought me here.
What was the Times saying ?
Troy NY, Leave here with you pride. Not your ride.
There is progress in Troy.
Troy is not the best place ever. I live there.
RayRay&&Diya lml same 😂
Majin best place to get kidnapped
Then you prob arent from troy at all.
I grew up in Troy. My mother moved us to the Eastside (Albia) when I was 8. It was better but there are a-holes everywhere. I moved my kids into the country. A lot better. Still some a-holes. People just cannot get along. It's a lot worse in the city because it's overcrowded.
i say nay nay
Will Gary's grandsons get bullied because of the way he treats people?
I lived in Troy it was the worst years of my life for real
this is sad, very sad that obviously an RPI student has no idea what troy is like. Troy is an amazing place.
turn the camera on your campus if you want to actually see some terrible things.
i live in troy
This never gets old-Hilarious!
HAHAHAHAHA.. EFFING PRICELESS!
The back of my house is in this movie. =(
Lived in Troy for 5 years....seen my apt in this vid
hey houstons not that bad i used to live there!
i know right?
i'm in NC now and it sucks bad. i'm from buffalo area but want to move around the adirondacks area with a good art scene. i was hoping Troy is cool, who knows
Oh...my...goodness... I know this is a mockumentary, but, but, but....shit. I applied to Rensselaer for a Ph.D. and am ready to retract it or not respond if I am admitted. What on earth is the rest of Troy like?
It's not bad... This is just a Satire. RPI I presume for the Ph.D, Now Call Rensselaer....... My Alma mater. Go for it.
:)
sous3id92 I see.
Crazy. I used to live in the blue house shown at 1:18 in the 1990's
It's pretty funny. You have to have a sense of humor. It's meant to mock the tourism videos that you see. I think it was well done. People may get upset cause the truth hurts. Get over it!
lol hilarious....
You know Senator Roy McDonald.... has a district office there and flies out the back door when his constituents arrive.
see video: "Fathers 4 Kids, Troy New York, Senator Roy McDonald"
lol the first 2 houses were mine back in 2002
