Her brother was/is an amazing keyboardist as well. They were total pros.

The reason I have loved Karen's voice so much is that she sounds so much like my mother, Andra Willis (Muhoberac), who was on the Lawrence Welk show as a top regular performancist .. they share so many similarities. Mum never played drums, of course, but piano and violin. Excellent. John Denver even did a version of the song she wrote for me as a baby.. "No One Like You".. which has been recorded 3 times over the years by her, and covered by so many people around the world. Proud of her and my father Larry.

@@Parrish_Muhoberac I did a search and listened to her a bit. Very nice voice. My mom probably enjoyed listening to her, as she was a vocalist herself. I remember the Lawrence Welk show playing on our TV, but I didn't recall her specifically.
Not enough people know what a monster she was on the kit. Drummers know, but we need to spread the word. RIP Karen.

As a drummer myself, I'm not saying it's easy but singing or just singing along for me actually really helped me keep in time a lot more than traditional methods like counting or following a metronome.

WOW that's also very humble because she had the most beautiful voice, and her sense of pitch was just beyond perfect.
That’s so crazy and cool at once as she had one of the most epic and memorable voices ever. What a talented musician she was and still greatly missed.

It was the pre-warning to the dark side of "the entertainment industry" & it took Karen Carpenter, Elvis Presley & John Lennon (to name a few) in such a short time🎶💔
She was, sadly she another tortured artist. Such a nice girl ,that's all I've ever heard said about her since I was a kid in the 70s.

It was said that she was the most comfortable and content when she was behind the drum kit. The record company and Richard both coerced her to be up front and focus on singing. I think that just made her self image that much more fragile and vulnerable. If only they had left her in her element.....

I watched this when I was 7. I'm still playing, and she's one of the reasons why. She was so talented.
I was really young When I first saw her play drums on tv. I thought, I'm going to do that someday. I became a drummer because of her.
My god. Those early Ludwigs sounded so nice. Mixed with Carpenter’s incredible voice it is just so perfect.

They sound amazing, and are even more amazing to play. The tightness of the snare, and the response of the toms is very unique to these drums. The bass drum sounds and feels like your hitting cardboard, but in the best way possible. Give them a whirl if you’re given the opportunity.

Dude amazing playing the classical style and that hand over hand thing she did during the Tom rolls was incredible. These female pop stars today can't hold a candle to Karen Carpenter. She was one of the greatest to ever do it. That's real talent right there. No drum machines, samplers, or auto tune. No pretend angst, she isn't immature writing about breaking up with a BF at 33 years old like she is in middle school and wearing it like a badge of honor. Just raw talent.
The technical mastery is freakin incredible. 18 YO! Nuts this is just the snare, and two toms. Proof you don’t need the giant kit to make a serious impression! The snare work is just so clean and tight. That leaves you speechless. Indescribably awesome.
She's always been a big inspiration to me. She had a great voice, AND was a great drummer. ❤️

I have always heard her story. I looked into her because everyone always talks about how great she is. But WOW i didn't know she was this much of a badass. She needs a movie not just about her struggles but how awesome she was.

She definitely knew her music. Those chops were and stick control were studied and practiced. No slop to be seen. Singing and playing drums at the same time is also another level of difficulty that is not super easy to master. She was a very special musician and entertainer.
She was an absolute BEAST on the drums! She should have been allowed to continue performing that way, singing and playing the drums simultaneously, as she clearly enjoyed the combination.

@@TheSeeking2know Not only do I agree, but it *might* have actually saved her life. Pure speculation on my part of course, but her issues stemmed from her insecurity/lack of confidence about her looks...which became WAY WORSE when she had to go "front and center".
@@jeffk1482 I've said the same for years. Being behind the kit was Karen's shield. Once she was pushed in front of the mic and away from the drums Karen's self esteem only worsened.

@@DanFloresII I was aged 10 when she became popular. She was the only female drummer we knew of & were thrilled & proud of her. The powers that be didn’t see drumming as “feminine”. They wanted a pretty girl dressed in fancy gowns or dresses back then & the drums hid them. Thankfully girls can do whatever they want, for the most part, in Western culture, it came as a result of a long hard fight. Sadly there were casualties in this fight.
Musical genius the amount of skill it takes to drum and sing is a level above greatness
Karen was so freaking accomplished! She was a crazy good drummer, and along with her hauntingly beautiful voice, she could sing in three different octaves - soprano, mezzo-soprano, contralto, and she did it well!
She had so much left to offer to the world! It's truly heartbreaking how her mother made Karen feel like she was never enough. 💔
Was her mother like that? I never heard about it. It sure was horrible how tormented she became and how young she died, for nothing.

Amazing, I had no idea she was that talented. Drums alone are hard AF, singing on top of hitting the skins and making it all come together is another level entirely.

@@stevengallant6363 Phil even admitted that he hired a drummer for Genesis so he could free himself up to put forth more effort vocally. He pointed out that simply keeping your posture for singing is different from drumming, making it hard to really belt. Karen was a BEAST
I’ve had people comment that singing and drumming are the same as playing any other instrument. I totally disagree. Playing drums is so physically demanding.

That's some serious drumming talent.
As we all know, It's her voice that melted hearts.
But she was a drummer long before she was a singer.
She followed her brother to long beach state university, he was in the choir, she was shy, didn't know many people, so decided to join the choir, again, because Richard was in it.
At one point the choir 'teacher' said "she has a voice good for pop up music" lol.
Good Lord! Had NO idea she could do THAT! Wow! Very impressive.

The Carpenters were the first group i ever loved. I played their records on my record player over and over, singing to every note Karen so beautifully sang. Today i discovered she was also an incredibly talented drummer! RIP Karen ❤ 🙏
