Synopsis:
They call it ’blue gold.’ Around the world, demand for water is exploding. By 2050, at least one in four will live in a country suffering from water shortages - creating ideal conditions for a new market…
Goldman Sachs, HSBC, UBS, Allianz, Deutsche Bank, BNP. Banks, investment funds and hedge funds are all rushing to invest billions of euros in anything related to water. A real monopoly of water has begun.
From California to Australia, from New York to London via Marseille, we investigate the financialization of water. New power relations are being established and access to water is being threatened.
It’s a battle taking place on many fronts: ideological, political, environmental, and of course, economic. The fate of nearly 10 billion inhabitants around the world depends on its outcome.

I am against the privatization of water. It was attempted in my town. We denied it.
so clean water is free in your country?
@@abdulmalikmohammed2891 My city owns the water processing. This means the rates can be low. If a private company owns it- those investors have to be paid. Hence higher water bills. We pay for water, as it has to be managed, but we the people own the system, not wall street.
@@abdulmalikmohammed2891public water we pay for is very different thab private water ....private way less regulation, less price regulation, less taking care of pipes (although some public water dont take care of pipes as they should neither)

I have been a licensed water and wastewater operator in 3 states in the USA. I can tell you from my perspective that you are better off letting the government handle the maintenance through taxation. I am forbidden by law, to explain some of the terrible things that I was forced to do to you as a private water and wastewater employee. As a state employee, I couldn't complain about anything but fluoride and management. Private water companies have private interests. Community water companies have community interests. Just so you are aware, no one does wastewater properly. You should really be paying more attention to wastewater effluent. Operators that sample are expected to pass, no matter 'what'. There is a lot of 'what' going on in wastewater.
I'm not tho. If you would ever like to talk confidentially let me know
i do the same job as you do, both drinking and wastewater ,we are far from having the scarcity problem where i am, but i know exactly what you mean about wastewater effluent . and why it's relevent where you are ..
are you referring to Gray Water when "wastewater" is employed?
@@jackstiles458 No. Gray water Has no fecal contamination and is considered safe to dilute in stream water in some cases. In my opinion it is not safe. It should be kept in check as well. I am referring to wastewater, as a whole, that is treated in wastewater plants then the treated water is placed back into a body of water for reuse. The effluent that comes out of these plants is NOT clean. Sampling is required to maintain a low level of bacteria. The operators that get paid by the plant owners are the legal samplers. Imagine it being a lot like internal affairs for police. Most people seem to have no idea that their wastewater is recycled in this way. That is by design.

Water is not a commodity. It's a necessity for survival.
I bet that diamond guy never even considered that....
Him and rich people like him are like King Midas. The king who asked for anything he touched turned into gold only for him to regret later that it was a curse and he could not drink or eat.
Water is a basic human NEED. Meaning, without it, we die. Comparing water (need) to diamonds (don't need) is not only absurd but detached from reality, and shows how these vultures have no regard for human life.
Exactly. I’d like to see the guy who said that if he would reach for diamonds to drink when his overweight as* is thirsty
The fact that it's necessary is what they're basing their business model on. If you can't afford water it's because you're an 'undesirable', so it's win-win for them.
We can LIVE without diamonds, we CAN'T live without water...These GREEDY bastards make me sick to my stomach.

Isn’t it fascinating how times change? Just 20 years ago, the idea of paying for water seemed unheard of, yet now we have monthly bills for it. I can't help but wonder if one day we’ll be subscribing to air too!

Air is now classed as a Natural Asset.
Once they are done with water, clean air will be next.
exactly. they won't stop.
don't forget Sunlight. Why "they" should just declare themselves God. Let's cut the crap. We gave them this power by the mere issuance of credit with zero capital to pay for any of it. The current global monetary system keeps countries in perpetual debt that eventually collapses their currencies meanwhile the elite buy up everything for "pennies on the dollar", stealing through inflation. If people are going to own the water and air, then they need to own and coin the own MONEY.

"...Water is the same as diamonds..." Don't forget, diamonds only command a high price because supply is famously reduced by cartels. Otherwise they'd cost next to nothing. Their high value is entirely artificially created. Lol.
That’s a fallacious argument, diamonds are not a basic necessity and not required for survival.
@@fromhigherground4272 The point I was trying to make is that if water is commoditised, cartels will more than likely restrict supply to the market in order to artificially raise prices. They are hopping mad because they haven't yet figured out how to monetize gravity.

I could agree in the money parts, but what if we know how the money goes of the privatization. Let's said it become the RnD to clean water around the earth or construct desalination plants cheaper and less energy. I am okay with that, but I am not okay with the privatization that make somebody rich for their family. We already seen it some companies sold "mountain fresh" water. They become rich just selling water, that's the part I believe government should do the intervention to prevent adverse situation in the future

There are some things that are not private. That is the substances that give us life. To control water is to control who will flourish and who shale wither...
"Water is no longer a natural ressource, but a commodity" This is basically a horror film that should be titled : Drought
So if they privatize water, who is responsible for toxic water that kills us? Example forever chemicals. If they sell water to drink or put in our food systems and they knew it had these chemicals, someone has to be responsible and fined.
Bilderberg group
We need more chemical engineers and material scientists to make membranes or harvesting the water from respiration of composting systems and transition to renewable materials and hydrogen/fuel cell energy. This would solve many issues
In an ideal world, water would be abundant and free. But we are far from an ideal world now... demand is quickly outstripping availability. The 'abundant' part of the ideal scenario is rapidly disappearing.
It probably doesn't matter who's managing the situation - whether it's private or otherwise... the water supply will dwindle. Private ownership just means a select few people will get very rich out of it.
My answer to the gentleman in the beginning about diamonds is I don't need diamonds to live, I need water 💦

Today water is being privatised. Tomorrow it will be the air you breathe.
The only reason breathable air hasn't been privatised is because there's no machine that can isolate air and make it exclusive
They’re gonna make a large vacuum for that
Doesn't mean we don't already pay for clean air because we do.
You sheep want it to happen so badly, shut the fuck up
Everyone has to face reality. Water is a basic need for our very existence. Those in developing countries, the hope of future prosperity. Their access to clean water has a long way to go. We've recently seen a flash of inflation. The strain on this supply could send prices on everything skyrocketing. I lived in the western US, Colorado, for 24 yrs. Water supply comes from the Rockies. A large amount of the SDS is sent to other western states. As with Colorado, drought in the west results in terrible forest fires. Living in the midwest for 39 yrs. I hadn't experienced fire there. When you see it up close it is scary.

Why is it people think it is good to allow corporations to take over
Solution: distinguish between residential & commercial/agricultural use. Structure pricing to preserve water ecology but w/ firms footing the bill not residents. Cap operator ROI @ 1.5%/year.

It’s a sad and horrible necessity. The exponential population growth will drive exponential water demand and with it, we get chaos, unless it is dampened by price
So how about we stop having babies and maybe think for a minute before chucking the next generation into a dry Planet to die a painful slow death?
How about we stop eating so much meat and start allocating our resources towards much more sustainable sources of food like mushrooms until we understand where the problem can be shifted......so many things. Price is the last thing necessary. Kindness and Iove reign when you look at everyone from a place of equal connection as if they were your family too and we try to band together to try and make this less rough. But alas we are immature.
Water is very precious. They show a rancher raising cattle in the driest region of his country. He is now paying millions of dollars for water. Was it better when he could use as much as he wanted, in the driest region of his country, with no thought to scarcity? If water doesn't have a value, it is hard for people to value it
Indeed. Farmers and ranchers tend to be the whiniest and most selfish industry, constantly feeling entitled to subsidies and public support whilst they pursue harmful and illogical agricultural practices.
Utter bullshit. Money should never be applied to what is needed for life to exist. Basic intelligence tells you wasting water is stupid. Water shouldn't be something we pay for. It should be free for everyone.
In theory if we valued appropriately it would place responsibility & value on the resource. But you know like I do that the immense value will be exploited and capitalized by hedge funds & the like
Water does not need to be privatized. It can be collectivized and this rancher would be under pressure under real pressure.

The thing about putting a price on something is that it keeps going up. Now you put a price on essential goods like water is a slippery slope of extreme capitalism where everyone not poor will be driven to poverty.
Of course anything gets done more efficiently and responsibly if you have proper private rights.
Privatization can also be done poorly, however.
Financial markets are vital in telling people what is scarce and what is plenty. Derivatives can help a ton here as well in keeping a long term perspective; something politicians are notoriously bad at.

How does a water company buy water from country and then when the company leaves the country the country has that company's debt? Then the people of that country have to pay that debt? While paying an increased cost for the water... wtf???
Comparing rain to diamonds, which have to be mined and processed, is a really stupid take.

privatization means those prices will skyrocket and the maintenance of said pipes won't be on par with what the govt. provides via taxation.
