      I think my system is pretty simple. At least it was: Amazon and Apple Card’s saved in their respective accounts, 2 cards in my wallet are red card for dining, and black card for everything else! Then when booking a trip, platinum for airfare and compare hotels on Amex site and if they’re higher priced, use the BofA card. Simple enough! Was almost too easy… The X1 and Cryptodotcom cards are about to make it interesting again!

      Thank you Mark! I’m actually considering dropping the red BofA card because I blow past the $2500 cap every time and would need 4-5 of them to maximize the 5.25%. I’m actually considering using the 5% Cryptodotcom card more - but I just can’t seem to get my head around the idea of using a prepaid debit card instead of a "real bank" credit card.

    Dave, why not get another BofA Cash Rewards card and set the category to Online Shopping?...this would cover buying new Apple gear at 5.25% which beats the X1 card. It may be different for Apple subscription services though, depends on what merchant code they are using...so perhaps the X1 card still applies there. Same applies to the Amazon Prime card, I only use it for Whole Foods now, because BofA Cash Rewards beats it (and I'm not running into the $2.5K/qtr limit)

    With BofA Cash rewards, there is a $2500/quarter limit on category eligibility. This means a $525 maximum bonus per year, so how did you get $900+ from it?

    • @HeythereDavehere
      @HeythereDavehere  2 года назад +10

      I blew past the $2500/qtr limit and earned the rest at 1.75% - not the most effective, I know! Should have been using the premium card for 3.5% when I went over or gotten additional red cash rewards cards… I checked my annual summary and I’d need to manage 5 red cards to fully capture the full 5.25% - too much hassle, but considering moving dining spend to X1 for 4% or cryptodotcom for 5%

    Hey Dave! Big fan of the channel, you got me into credit cards. A crypto com card review would be great! I also use the BofA program and have 2 red cash back cards (dining/online) and 1 black/grey premium rewards card. Congrats on the new diamond status! Couple comments on your cashback. At time 713 the multiplier is 2.625% for everything, not 3.625%. The travel/dining is at 3.5%. Not sure if you were just trying to be concise? haha. The red card maxes out on 5.25% at $2500 per quarter (at least for me) and then drops to 1.75% so $10,000 per year would be max $525 a year. If you racked up $901 then you probably had to spend around $30k and your average cashback would have been ~2.9%. It might make sense to use your black/grey premium rewards card for high value dining to get a full 3.5% on that extra $20k. The difference between 1.75% and 3.5% on $20k would have increased your cash back this year by $350! So hopefully you can beat it again in 2022. Cheers!

    • @HeythereDavehere
      @HeythereDavehere  2 года назад +4

      Good catch. I can’t believe I not only *said* 3.625% but also *typed it in as a title*! Oops. I know better! I was just being concise about travel/dining on the premium card. When hotels aren't 5x on platinum, I use bofa premium for 3.5%. I also use it for dining when traveling internationally. I literally use it for EVERYTHING else. My red card does cap the 5.25% at 2500/qtr and if I were better at monitoring my spending I'd get 2-3 MORE of them. I like to keep things simple, but I missed out on $650 easily. BTW, I reviewed my year-end statement and you're RIGHT -- my overall earn rate on the card was only 2.86%. I was shocked. Barely over 2.625% and certainly lower than 3.5% I could have gotten on the grey card.
      I did inadvertently use the red card for a few things that should have been on the premium card like a charity donation and some food places that counted as merchandise... but my MAIN problem was that I blew past that $2500 EVERY TIME! By a LOT. I actually need 4-5 red cards to maximize the 5.25% ...OR maybe I should start using the Cryptodotcom card for meals... although it's technically a prepaid debit card and their way of handling "preauth" amounts for tips isn't very clear in-app and apparently, there is no other real statement other than a CSV download. Thanks for the comment! I really appreciate the thought that went into it.

      Would the rules really be much different than consistently buying and paying on time? You can build your credit in the U.S if you buy a hamburger once a month and pay it off in full. It doesn’t take much effort, banks only want to know you’re a dependable borrower.

    • @in5minutes556
      @in5minutes556 2 года назад

      @@muckymucks it’s not the rules but keeping the credit scores in both. If I left the UK for 10 years and then came back I’ll start from zero, not to mention that I need to start from zero in the countries I’m moving to as well. Getting a credit card in a new country is also not trivial if you haven’t lived there and I assume it’s even harder if you actually reside abroad but still want to build a credit score in that country say if you want to buy a house using a mortgage in that other country
