As cool as these super-tall towers are, they don't seem like a very efficient use of space or materials. It seems like the more practical choice would be to go wide at present day building height (80 stories or less) to use up all the "wasted" space between buildings and above roads. Maintenance is much easier when with surrounding support structures, which skyscrapers never have. What are they going to do 80 years from now when a 1 mile high building is struck by lightning, catches fire, or is damaged by a hurricane and needs maintenance in the middle of a crowded city? I hope that engineers and the districts involved in their approval have longevity in mind for these buildings.

If you build enough flats within the building, you could offset initial costs with rental money, service charges and generating its own electricity (either via solar power, wind power or an on site biogas processor to treat wastewater) to sell on when there’s a surplus. You’d have to be in it for the long run, but it could hypothetically make a large amount of money if you get the figures right?
