For architects it is relatively easy to design those super thin, tall and narrow towers that reach kilometers in height, but for engineers it is super complicated for their construction due to their structure, resistance, transfer of materials and danger at height.

As cool as these super-tall towers are, they don't seem like a very efficient use of space or materials. It seems like the more practical choice would be to go wide at present day building height (80 stories or less) to use up all the "wasted" space between buildings and above roads. Maintenance is much easier when with surrounding support structures, which skyscrapers never have. What are they going to do 80 years from now when a 1 mile high building is struck by lightning, catches fire, or is damaged by a hurricane and needs maintenance in the middle of a crowded city? I hope that engineers and the districts involved in their approval have longevity in mind for these buildings.

The last one looks to be a replacement for traveling to far and avoiding traffic jams and rush hour. However, it isn't feasible that these mega structures will not pose a serious threat if anything similar to a hurricane or earthquake were to occur. The idea is straight of the ingenious mind and it would be a great addition to our growing culture. But in the long run I can see these structures falling into ruin because of the changes in government policy and weather that is unpredictable. Lets hope for the best.

Sadly as a Muslim, I can tell you these Arabs are not doing it to make a profit, its just a show off thing, they are competing to show who has the biggest toy, you think Arab workers or engineers are making this? No, its the expats building these, once completed the owners will use them to scoff at those with smaller towers, its horrendous, what they are doing, we Muslims are supposed to spend on the poor, the orphans, the sick, on education and science and technology, but these people have very small goals. People may think im jealous, why should I? my life will soon be over, I do not covet this life of this world beyond reason, the next life is my goal, may Allah guide us all, Ameen.

Hypothetically, could you build a mega skyscraper for affordable housing? If you build enough flats within the building, you could offset initial costs with rental money, service charges and generating its own electricity (either via solar power, wind power or an on site biogas processor to treat wastewater) to sell on when there’s a surplus. You’d have to be in it for the long run, but it could hypothetically make a large amount of money if you get the figures right?
