The lyrics of this song have stirred some controversy over the years. I'll leave them aside for others to debate. Musically, this song is one of the best from this group, with the marimbas played by Brian Jones and the unearthly guitars (lead and acoustic) by Keith Richards---Keith also plays the fuzz bass on this song. Rhythmically, this song is amazing. The lead guitar work is such a treat.

If you think this is bad you should hear their song "Stupid Girl", from the same time period. Much later, Ellen Foley (the woman who sang with Meat Loaf on "Paradise by the Dashboard Light") recorded a cover of "Stupid Girl" and put a whole new spin on it.
All consideration of the lyrics aside, I think this is a terrific example of the early Stones after they stopped being just a blues cover band and started playing songs of their own. Musically it's very innovative, with the marimba and all. Another early Stones song that has a similar musical vibe, minus the misogyny, is "Out of Time".

Brad and Lex, I love the journey you are on because you've learned a valuable lesson that so many people fail to learn--you've learned how to listen to songs in the context of their era. I applaud you for knowing where your values are and sticking to them while still being able to look back with a laugh and say, "Wow--that era was really different!" That's a mature and healthy attitude. I think there's definitely some "tongue-in-cheek" going on in the lyrics. The 60s were the era when women were first beginning to really assert themselves as independent, and there was a backlash from older generations (the politicians, pundits, and thought leaders of the day).

  • @blackenreed1425

The answer to Brad's final question is "NO!" - you should have seen the gleam in his eyes when the sang about the squirmin' dog who's had her day 🙂 Luckily in those days the older generation disliked "our" music by reflex and listened as little as possible - so things like this and "Lola" by the Kinks escaped censorship.

    • @nealanderson9719

Man.. the U.S.A. has always been weird about what they've tried to censor... As long as the lyrics were somewhat cryptic and not too lewd, crude, or blasphemous, you could pretty much say anything up until the 90's. 90's music really pushed the boundaries on censorship and you could pretty much say anything short of threatening assasination on the President. Now we're backtracking in that department with the SJW's, I think there's a balance that is always being pushed in one direction or the other. As for why the older generation didn't censor music, they would have been huge hypocrites... Frank Sinatra and James Brown had some equally misogynistic and offensive songs, even when measured up against "Under My Thumb".

'Under my thumb' means subservient and controlled.
'Wrapped around my finger' means free but I can easily manipulate her whenever I want to.

So cool how you guys keep going into the stones catalog. It took many years of listening to music to suddenly realize they’re the best band for me if all time.

This song is definitely of an era. I was too young to know what the reaction was to this when it came out but when I started listening to this song in the 70s attitudes towards women were changing but not quite as evolved as they might be today, there was still some old school guys willing to show a woman what’s what. Just watch some of the old James Bond movies with Sean Connery, man when some woman gave him lip it was the back of his hand. Watching that stuff now is shocking but no one batted an eye back then.
Also, being wrapped around someone’s finger suggests you are so enamoured with the person you’ll do anything for them. Being “under their thumb” is much darker and probably not so voluntary… I wouldn’t exactly call it healthy.

If a girl doesn't want to be under your thumb you can aways offer her another finger. 😂 don't loose your minds. This is just something we'd say back in the day. Brad's right the times have changed. It went to wrapped around your finger, which is cute and sounds less threatening but the sentiment is still the same.

Mick may have been inspired by Marianne Faithfull, his main squeeze at the time and the person (along with Keith) most responsible for her career. So Marianne was arrogant and spoiled, coming from wealth, having every man who ever met her back then wanting to "know" her because she had such a uniquely angelic face and nice Tetons. A major conquest for Mick, keeping her was a motivation for his early and rapid success. So once Mick got "Satisfaction"-level famous, the power shift was complete. She was under his thumb.

Nowadays we'd celebrate women who keep a men under their thumb as strong women, but a man singing that would be anathema. Maybe in another 50 years we'll figure out neither should be under the other's thumb. 😋
