  • A series of clips that I took today (Monday, January 29th 2018) Of the Niagara Short-line Trillium Railway. Alco Montreal Locomotive Works S-13U #108 was out doing some jobs around St.Catharines, one of which was a fail. This is because on a drop off run, a GATX tanker car derails. Hope you enjoy!

incredible footage, especially those trax that criss-cross into the unknown areas behind small businesses/warehouse receiving docks, those were 'places' I only saw when on the freeways during my young'ns days. Double cool was the gates that had to be opened before entering, not to mention a siding with several cars just 'stored' next to a business employee's parking lot, I dig that. Cheers !

Sadly, from what I've seen in other vids, their Alco roster is steadily being replaced by EMDs from various leaser companies. Glad to know the road I work, across the border, did kind of a backflip and got rid of most of the EMDs, like a GP9 and a few F Units we had not too long ago, for more of the old realiables. One of which is a C424, originally from the Minnesota Commercial.

They sure did have lot more things on in 2018. I wonder since after covid-19 if Canadian Erector will ever see any rail service again. Also the crossing at Eastchester Ave actually worked. 😊

    Hi Railfan, nice video!
Niagara has a lot of rail history,
I use to live in PC, and have seen a lot of changes, remember the line down Elm Street?
My favourite book is Niagara, St. Catherine's & Toronto Electric Railway, wouldn't it be great to have that much cummuter rail today!
Glad to see this is still running!

Wow, an old Alco that does not hardly smoke! Maybe it has been repowered at some point, ha ha. Actually it looks pretty good for an old short line local. A good pressure wash and some fresh paint and she would look almost as good as new. Those flanges are getting a good work out, squealing almost everywhere. That would get annoying after a while. But I guess that is what short line industrial switching is all about. As someone who lives in the states it does seem weird not to hear the horn at road crossings. I don't think that is a bad idea though. Maybe leave it to the engineers discretion. Many times just a short blast or two would suffice. Or a horn zone like you mentioned. The US federal regs of 2 longs, 1 short and 1 long holding though the crossing is a bit of overkill sometimes. But that has been the tradition and law for a looong time I think. We do have some quiet zones here and there but I think they are pretty few and far between.

Hey thanks for the comment! Unfortunately they don't use this unit around here anymore, not entirely sure why, still works great as far as I know, but yeah the conductor will flag the crossing unless he sees that there are no cars and gives the engineer the word to continue, as there is a lot of residential around these tracks.

That's super dangerous having the conductor stand right on the middle of the car like that! also to bad they don't blow that K3L I'd like to hear it!

I have always found it odd that trillium is so sparing with the whistle in St Catharines

Some CN locals in Toronto are on and off with horn blowing at crossings. One reason might be that home residents don’t like the horn blasting. And go to Bayview and find a guy that hates it‼️ I also know of an auto mechanic right beside crossing that doesn’t like it either.
      Not that it’s an excuse

    • @railfanwill3450

@@trainfire2008 yeah around here there's a lot of residential, plus, this local always goes very slow, and has a flagsman for the crossings.

Love this footage. I'm from the UK and don't know much about USA trains but here goes - use of the word Railway, not Railroad on the locomotive. The loco/train is seen crossing un gated crossings all over the place, with little or no warning that a train is about to cross, no use of the horn. Why? Last, just to say I love the loco, built about 1960?

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 2 года назад

"Railway" is quite a common term even in North America. In fact, only one Class I, Union Pacific Railroad uses the name "railroad" in its full name, whereas BNSF, Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, Kansas City Southern and Norfolk Southern all call themselves "Railway" (the other Class I's use neither term).
Lack of crossing protection is surprising, but the trains are travelling at low speed and can stop very quickly (as they did at the derailment), and the roads are also low-speed local roads. The conductor did get off to stop the traffic on one occasion; on the others, there was nobody using the road.
