Options may be to use clear silicone and maybe something other than potato starch - like gum tragacanth (I use that for making soft pastels and a small amount can jell to make a large batch of pastels, so possibly less could be used - just something for thought.) Other possible starch substitutions could be tapioca, coconut, rice, just about any flour may work similarly. There are cool PearlEx pigments like interference colors that could be added in. I may have to make a case for my ipad pro that I haven't been able to find any case for yet.

This seems like an interesting way to seal up low-power DYI electronics for weatherizing. Not only for a water-proof layer, but to protect it against hard hits with something soft. I think a thick shell like this would take a lot of beating, and being a mold-able putty makes it very versatile.
I could also imagine this being useful for DIY tool grips, to approximate vulcanized rubber.
I assume the starch is just there to make it less sticky to where you can handle it. Does it affect the final strength after curing significantly?

I was a waitress for almost 25 years and one of my very favorite incidents happened when I approached a new table by greeting them with "How's it going, Folks?", as is common to say here in Minneapolis. The young couple both looked up at me and the woman immediately asked if I had just called them GOATS. I busted out laughing and told her that no, I had indeed not-but for years I'd been looking for a discreet way to relieve the tension that the worst customers can build in me throughout the day from time to time.
That is how I began my own personal little inside joke of getting away with calling people goats who were acting like insufferable pigs. (Both are animals I'd find easier to serve Any Day!!)

Yes! It would also be excellent for replacing missing foot caps from the legs of metal stools etc. The options are pretty much endless, really. I also think that if you experiment with the various types of plant based starches and the quantity and even branch into things like plaster of Paris or drywall material (whatever that's made of), you could be able to fit any need you have in custom detail.

Ollie Badstue but there's shipping costs and many times there's only a very few variations to chose... That's the problem I had with my old phone, only in eBay and aliexpress it was possible to find a case for it and most of them I didn't like, it would be better to make my own

cheap construction silicone is highly corrosive. It will destroy electronics. You need to use neutral cure silicone for anything near electronics. That phone is most likely a brick now

    • @m3sca1
      @m3sca1 8 лет назад +13

ipissed Firstly, let me commend you on such fine language you excersize in talking to strangers, your mother would be proud. Secondly, phones easily fill up with lint and pocket dust, that is way bigger than corrosive gas molecules...if your wrapping it for 12 hrs in a silicone blanket it will be foreced in and work in through the USB socket, the buttons, the 3.5mm jack and the cracks all the way around. I have first hand experience with this, as i tried to make a waterproof housing for a metal detector. The entire electronics were rotted and rusted within a week. And thirdly, crawl away and make argument with someone as stupid as yourself since you are clearly out of your depth, as you have zero idea about the subject, and obviously you are just out looking for someone to troll.

Aww your little book is just darling. Somehow you missed the part about cutting the silicone with starch which dramatically reduces viscosity, and flow.
Not that it really matters because like I said silicone is not corrosive, in fact it is used in the electronics industry extensively for things like securing modular components to circuit boards.

ipissed glad you liked it honey. Was it too long for your attention span? Did you miss the particular in my 1st post about Neutral Cure silicone? The goo doesn't leak in fool. It's the vapor from the curing process that is corrosive. The gas permeates. Go on, try it. Destroy your mommies phone. See for yourself. I can tell any good advice is lost on you. Do some homework on silicone products. The maker of this video neglects to tell anyone about the different types and their applications. The give away that he is as ignorant as yourself is that he mentioned doing it outside because of the vapors.

m3sca1 Sounds like you sealed some moisture up into your metal detector with silicone, and ruined it dumbass.
You should have coated the circuit board with silicone first. lol

ipissed this is from Dow Corning
RTV moisture cure systems for silicone polymers
Learn how RTV moisture cure systems for silicone polymers work with a condensation reaction in humidity.
      Common applications:
Building sealants, bathtub caulk, roof coatings, elastomers, curable medical adhesives, electronics adhesives, fabric and leather waterproofing coatings
      Advantages
RTV (room-temperature vulcanizing); cure can be accelerated by increasing temperature and humidity
      Robust cure system
      One-part ease of use
      Relatively low cost
      Good adhesion
      Neutral cure options (alkoxy)
      Disadvantages
Shelf- and pot-life limitations related to the potential for accidental exposure to moisture vapor.
Acetoxy cure generates acetic acid, which is corrosive to metal and has an unpleasant vinegar odor.
Isopropyl alcohol or lithium-based additives found in greases and lubricants can inhibit some moisture cure products.
      Relatively slow rate of cure.
Only useful for relatively thin sections due to moisture requirement; not good for highly confined applications.

Like it! And you can fix your leaking shower with the rest of the silicone! This at least shows you can still make things yourself in today's world (where lots of people in the West seem to have no practical skill at all). And you can make a case for almost anything like this - and put whatever colour dye you like in the mix. (I dont know why some clowns are pointing out you can buy mobile phone cases. So what?) Yo, Romanursuhack/Crazy Experimenter!

If you have a phone that you can't find a case for, currently you can buy universal bumpers made from a super stretchy silicone. They accommodate a large range of phone shapes and sizes, but they have their issues too.
I am not always happy with cases that you can buy. They might have rough edges, they might not sit well enough, the holes can be offset. I think being able to create your own protective case is still a valuable skill :) Even though the edge around the screen didn't come out too well in this video, and honestly i don't have a technique in mind on how to make it better. But i guess with enough effort, you can accomplish anything.
Shipping small items from China that fit into a mail envelope only costs a fraction of a dollar; however it takes 10-14 days usually, the time that your phone will be unprotected.
By the way, that comment at the end of the video about silicone being safe... well that only applies to pure silicone cured by platinum catalyst, which is quite expensive. This does not apply to home improvement caulk, which will usually be cured by peroxide or tin and produce various chemical byproducts. It's not dangerous to touch, but it's not safe around injuries and food.
