  • How to fix your kitchen faucet if it's hard to spin. The cause is a buildup of gunk inside the faucet. This is a Koehler brand but probably similar for many others.
    **UPDATE 1** - You do not have to loosen the fixture from below to perform the fix! I'll leave it in the video for informational purposes but save yourself the step and skip loosening from below!!
    **UPDATE 0** - Remember you can always just call Kohler and they will send you free replacement parts for your faucet. Consider calling them for a replacement collar and O-ring for under the collar threaded cap!
    DO: ALWAYS shut off your water valves from below!!

    Just a note about grease. Do not use any grease on potable water lines unless NSF approved. Use Dow Corning 111 grease which is used on Commercial Water Softeners. You can eat this grease and it will not harm your family. Small tubes of this grease are available. Just check around. Never hardens. I have some in my tool box for over a decade.

    Thanks for the video. It came up automatically after i had viewed the Kohler video on replacing the o-rings to stop a drip. My faucet had always been really tight and I hadn't realized it could be fixed so easily. The way you put the o-ring on was a much better way than I did it. I put it directly over white plastic piece, but it never properly fit and came out between the base and the bonnet. Putting into the top piece worked better and allowed it to align perfectly.

    Thanks for your video and every process of the work, that you explained in detail . You have made an excellent video. I removed the white residues and made it working. I should say, almost every step of it was a bit difficult and opening the old rusted screws and hard to reach screws were not an easy task to do. I think it is worth the money that plumbers charge to fix it. Thanks again for your help.

    Thanks for the tutorial. I am going to attempt this since my husband knows plumbing but I have to do ALL the maintenance in our home. I will call Kohler first.
    I hope to get it right the first time so I don't hear something negative about doing it myself, or do water damage.
    Mine squeaks when I turn the handle and is hard to move and have to look twice to make sure it is shut off; and just last night, the cold water barely comes out.
    It looks easy enough to repair with your instructions. Thank you

    I just used this video and have my faucet swiveling like a champ now. Thanks for the heads up about not wrenching on that soft-metal collar. This would have been a $120 plumber visit- While I had it all taken apart, I replaced the faucet valve too so I don't have to worry about a slow drip in the future. I was also sure to put a new black ring on the soft-metal collar. The one we had was 15 years old, dried and broken. The new one should last a bit too. Thanks again!

    Five years after market, and I'm having issues locating the nonmetallic repair kit for this valve. You did okay... folks never expect that cap metal to be so thin. That means that the harder you grab on t it to hold it and turn, you squash it egg shaped and it won't turn. There are a lot of valves like that out there... be cautious when you try to remove one. Thanx for your efforts.

    Thank you for the video, it was very helpful to me. While there may be a Kohler lifetime warranty, it only runs to the original purchaser, not to subsequent purchasers of a home with this kitchen faucet already installed, like me. Like some other commenters, I needed to reinstall the oval washer underneath the countertop before removing the water spout to have sufficient leverage to make the spout swivel to get it loose. It would subtract steps from the I think that would make the installation easier.

    • @19mike65
      @19mike65  3 года назад +1

      Correct. Note that when I called Kohler they didn't ask for my receipt - just asked me where I got it and when, and that was enough for me to use the lifetime warranty.

    It's also a good idea to take that white collar and position the open section of it toward the back to prevent water splash from getting in as easily as when up front. My O-ring touches nothing if I put it where you have. Instead, I stretched it over the brass housing to sit right over, in contact with, the white collar. After tightening the top chrome ring, it keeps it in place but I don't gain a water tight seal but nearly so. Mine is the same as yours.

  • @paulreeder5241
    @paulreeder5241 6 лет назад +3

    "O" rings are used to seal and that is all. Yes, if you should crimp it, you will need to replace it. There are also lubricants you can purchase for "O" rings. This will help keep them pliable. Over time "O" rings will harden, making them useless. There is even a "Rejuvinator" for rubber that can be used to bring "O" rings back to soft, pliable condition.

    This Kohler video shows how to open the faucet: ruclips.net/video/SerCQCle_Ho/видео.html
    I used a strap wrench to remove the dome part without hurting it. Like one of these:
    www.amazon.com/Performance-Tool-W54059-2-Piece-Wrench/dp/B003UDS83U
    There was no reason to do anything under the sink, or to remove the valve. It was a struggle for me to pull the faucet body up. I move it a tiny bit and then back down, and the rubber ring was then up just enough to pull out. That helped. I never totally remove the faucet body, just moved it up a few issues. Use CLR or Lime Away and a toothbrush to clean everything. I scraped away some harder corrosion inside the upper 1/2" of the faucet body where the white plastic ring goes, gently with a small flat screwdriver. Since you don't remove the valve, there is no need to turn the water off and you can use the faucet itself to rinse parts. After drying, I used silicone grease on the bottom plastic, white ring, o-ring. and threads (why not). Reassembled and it's perfect.

    I found I did NOT need to loosen the connection underneath because I could pull the outer portion of the neck up far enough that I could get to the rotating surface. In my case the brass nut did not hold the collar of the faucet neck down so I didn't need to mess with it either. Simply 1) hex key to take the handle off the top, 2) rotate the trim collar off the top by hand, 3) lift the neck up. Clean the rotating surfaces, apply grease and reassemble. Rather than brake grease you might want to use a silicone grease at the base of the neck that deals well with water.

    Thanks for this video. I'm on my second faucet for the same reason. I hate getting under my sink to readjust the oblong collar w/ two screws. Question: do you crank down the oblong collar all the way up and snug it to the round steel washer, then tighten the two set screws ? My faucet keeps loosening up. Granted I haven't clean the plastic collar like you just did. I'm going to do that next. 2nd Question. do you recommend cleaning the lower white plastic 'O' ring at the base of the faucet ? I really appreciate your video. I have learned alot.... nothing I hate more than crawling under the sink .

    • @19mike65
      @19mike65  5 лет назад +1

      To your first question - first you tighten up the big oblong washer until it's generally tight, then you tighten the screws. The oblong washer is impossible to tighten too much without de-centering the faucet - which is why they have the screws to really tighten it up (turning the screws won't risk de-centering the faucet).
      to your 2nd question I clean all the parts including the white plastic collar piece.

  • @Musclford

    how can anyone thumbs down, aside from a plumber not getting a chance to charge for a replacement or the "fix"..... Thx.. Took care of our issue as well.
    you won't be able to pull the entire assy up but you can get up enough to scratch off the buildup of lime etc. the black oring is to just keep water from getting down inside, it's not water pressure related. Just use common sense, I took a glass of water and poured it into the valve are to flush any contaminants before putting in the cartridge assy again.. Use a couple paper towels to soak all the water up before sitting in the cartridge.
    Anyone.. with a set of allen wrenches and channel locks / socket / wrench can do this. Basically, lime is causing it to freeze up.

      Totally loosen the large spinning bolt underneath that holds the faucet in place. Then you can pull the whole assembly up to an extent (The hoses themselves will stop you from being able to pull it up by more than a few inches.).

  • @JackStalnaker

    I had to use a tool on the decorative ring. Even with the tool, it took significant strength to break loose. I don't know if the installer put it on too tightly, or if mineral build-up had welded it in place. But either way, it would've required the Hulk or Superman to take it off without a tool. I just wrapped the jaws of of the pliers in copious electrical tape, and the ring escaped mostly unharmed.

      Great idea! Yes wrapping something soft and high-grip like electrical tape or even a rubber grip pad (like what old folks use to better grip a tight jar lid will do the trick!)

    If you have build up, would it be a good idea to pull it all off and soak it in vinegar before lubricating and reassembling?
    Should I try that?

      Yes and a toothbrush is helpful to scrub the parts clean. Wash metal parts off with water before reassembly.

    So correct me if I'm wrong 19mike65, so you loosen the bottom screws on the oblong washer? Heard another person call it something else. That oblong washer is in a very tight spot at my house.

    • @19mike65
      @19mike65  5 лет назад +1

      Some have commented on this -- you don't actually need to loosen the bottom washer to perform the rest of the steps. Try doing it without loosening the bottom as it is not necessary.

  • @ian22222

    Haha you should see ours! We have one exactly like this, and it is beyond repair at this point. Extremely difficult to turn, leaks, can’t change spray pattern, it’s just awful 😫. You said you’ve had to fix yours twice because it wasn’t spinning; wouldn’t you think that at that point it’s a design flaw? I understand that faucets get like that but twice?!

    Couldn't the grease you put in get into the water?

  • @paulreeder5241
    @paulreeder5241 6 лет назад +1

    6 months? Wow. This time, did you check to make sure that the grease you applied wouldn't degrade the nylon washer? You don't just "Add grease" arbitrarily. You must first find out how the grease will affect that nylon washer. They make grease for nylon/plastic to metal contact. I'm sure that the grease for automotive disc breaks would be kinda harsh on nylon/plastic material.
    Other than that, this was very helpful. Thank you.

    It's not necessary to unscrew the faucet from the bottom. It's also not necessary to unscrew the valve.
    Just unscrew the bolt that holds the handle in place and then unscrew the cap. Then pull the shower head a bit and gently pull the faucet upwards and it should just come off to give you the room to clean the faucet inside, as well as the plastic spacer.

    I just moved into an apartment and have the same faucet but mine doesn't move at all. Does this mean it wasn't installed correctly

    • @19mike65
      @19mike65  5 лет назад

      Hi S Ashraf, I don’t know for sure if yours has a problem causing it not to move (or if it is some different model meant to be stationary).
      If it’s really the same model then it is made to rotate and I don’t think you can install it such that it doesn’t rotate.
      If you’re renting and the landlord is in charge of fixing things ask them to have it looked at. Or ask a neighbor - maybe they all have the same faucet and you can confirm that theirs moves or not.
      All the best!

    Help me diagnose! This is the faucet have. It does not turn and the top does not pull out. Will this fix both issues? The plumber said I need a whole new faucet!

    • @19mike65
      @19mike65  3 года назад

      The top not coming out is completely not related to this fix. This is only for spinning.
      The top not coming out should be easier to diagnose. It's one long black hose with a weight on the hose (to encourage the head to go back and stay in place). Check that this long hose is not caught on anything under your sink.

    Probably a great idea to put automotive grease where potable water flows 😉

    • @19mike65
      @19mike65  3 года назад

      Agreed on that being a bad idea - I don't do that and do not suggest it. Where I show using grease is not where the water flows to the tap. Water sometimes leaks through the faucet outer case o-ring which contributes to the gunk that stiffens the faucet rotation. Grease here can slow down the buildup but this is not in the path of any water you drink or see out the tap.

  • @haciendadad
    @haciendadad 4 года назад +1

    Wouldn't the water going through the area that you put caliper grease on? Wouldn't that be bad for you?

    • @jphickory522
      @jphickory522 4 года назад +1

      A silicone based plumber’s lubricant should have been used not automotive grease. Regardless, the grease he used will never be in contact with the water that flows from the faucet’s spigot. It’s possible the grease he used will not degrade the nylon washers but safer to use silicone.

  • @rimad6882

    The problem of hard turn, in most of the cases, is in the plastic cartridge you pulled out. You get a new cartridge, or you disassemble it. There are two ceramic plates inside that rub each other. These ceramic plates need to be cleaned, and greased with appropriate silicone faucet grease.

    Thanks for the fix-It video. My problem is the spray no longer works as it is supposed to. I no longer can get a normal single stream, it also sprays when in the single stream mode. I have the part number for the spray part, but don't know the part number for the entire system, so I can't get the part. So, if you are still active, can you send the part number?Thanks,Wes

    • @19mike65
      @19mike65  5 лет назад

      Hi Wesley - I don't know the part # but give Kohler a call and they'll help identify the piece and will send you a replacement. They'll ask you for a part number off a sticker on one of the hoses under the sink and will ask you when/where you bought the faucet- I don't know how judicious they are with this info -- I bought mine 5-6 years before calling them and they were cool with just general answers.

    I don't understand why this faucet interior crusts over every 3-6 months. I keep taking it apart and cleaning it, but it happens over and over again. Kohler will replace parts for free, but no part replacement has stopped this from happening. Does anyone know how I can at least slow down how often this happens?

    • @mrtools2
      @mrtools2 5 лет назад +1

      If you live in an area with poor water quality (i.e., lots of calcium in the water) you may need to install a water softener for the entire house, which will keep the crud out of your water. Also, use the silicone grease when reinstalling the faucet, as recommended in this video.

  • @paulreeder5241
    @paulreeder5241 6 лет назад +9

    I review as I watch. Why did you skip showing everything? I mean, you showed removing the nylon washer. So, why not show the re-installing the nylon washer? Don't say it's because it should be self explanatory. Just do the reverse of removing it. There may be something special you need to do to align everything.
    Sorry if I seem to be picking nits. But there are some people out there that don't even know what a screw driver is. This video will save people a lot of money. And I do mean A LOT of money. Depending on your income. Plumbers charge exorbitant amounts of money for something that only takes then 10 minutes to fix. This is why people come to You-Tube in the first place.
    Just sayin'.

    the little screw is not opening with hex screwdriver AT ALL. what to do

    • @19mike65
      @19mike65  3 года назад

      Make sure you use the right size hex screwdriver and dont be afraid to turn it HARD. Your has probably seized due to rust/mineral deposits from water coming on it over the years. It will come off but make sure you use the right hex driver or you will strip it and have one more issue to overcome!
