As a native Californian I am pretty amazed at how cool these tracks are. Hearst castle, the LA river, the Monterey bay aquarium, Death Valley, it just keeps going.
Yeah it's kind of neat. The Santa Cruz one features the Boardwalk and the famous Big Dipper roller coaster as well. The San Diego harbor has a huge WW2 aircraft carrier that tourists can go inside of and tour. Pretty clearly made in California I'm gonna guess.
the way we keep getting bodied in the game selection, i suspect the last stretch of this challenge is going to be all the best games in a sequence haha. love this series, proud of you for sticking it out!
@@-Zakhiel- He's not finished with them all yet. He's on game 273. Can check out the spreadsheet in the video description to see what he's completed thus far.
took me a second but i assume you mean the marble race at the end haha. yes i was thinking that when i watch them too. he reminds me of t90s commentary on aoe2 videos xD
I vividly remember playing this cabinet as a kid. They cut it in the N64 version, but in the cabinet, when you drive through the mall you run over pedestrians that look like cardboard cut outs and they go flying. You can also run over a cow and blood splatters on the screen.
That SC track is actually pretty cool. The fact you enter through that psychedelic tunnel immediately followed by driving on a giant PCB filled with resistors and capacitors. I’m assuming that’s a reference to the fact that there was a small bay area clique of college kids that loved LSD and went on to found most of the OG personal computer manufacturers in the US.
I love this game, one of my favorite racing games to play when I just want to relax. So much wackness and crazy tracks. I love how you just need to press gas and not think about anything anymore. Also a blast to play in split screen. Very underrated game.
Oh man. I love these videos. The LA course featured the LA River and the SF one had both Bay and Golden Gate bridges. (And SF has the Muni Metro, which shares a fair amount of stations with BART, both of which are underground through much of SF, but don't run on the same tracks.)
*in Los angeles* Thab: “Is that the sewer?” Me: “well no it’s the Los Angeles river which is very polluted because it was paved over and … ok yeah I guess it’s the sewer”
I feel like this game is more fun if you’re familiar with California- the iconic landmarks and environments are really fun to see. Can see why it wouldn’t be as fun if you hadn’t spent much time there.
Here’s a fun tip for racing games… if you hold UP on the joystick all the time and roll it left to right when turning you can drastically reduce the turning sensitivity in high sensitivity games.
5:05 love the chatter complaining about how everything looks rundown once you cross into Mexico from San Diego. I have a feeling he's never actually taken the trip to Tijuana. It really do be like that.
At 13:36 the city is actually Oakland, not Los Angels! You see, San Francisco is on the left (or west) the other side of the bay! If you drive slowly in the water of the bay, you can even find Alcatraz island (the Rock) right side of the Golden Gate bridge. Man, I love these kind of details!
Holy crap, my memory of this game was utterly buried until I saw you could choose the golf cart. I have distinct memory of driving the golf cart on the roller coaster track. Thanks for this blast from the past
This looks suspiciously like the Rush 2: Extreme Racing game engine, am I onto something? The physics, look and feel...hmm. edit: the license plates and 1st Place graphic have me convinced. Both Midway, so it's not that surprising other than I hadn't heard of this game before today.
"It's almost something sick every time!" is very true lol. You make all of these reviews interesting, but it would be nice to get one of the iconic games on here.
I dont know if you've ever played any of the Oddworld games. Whether you have or haven't, for some reason your voice sounds just like Abe from Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exodus
You can probably stop saying skip to the time stamp to skip the marble race now. Pretty sure everyone’s ok with the change now, can’t even remember the last way we did it lol
The year is 2184. All hope for humanity is lost. Ai has taken ahold on humanity. The last bastion of human hope wanes as thab releases the final video of his N64 video series 🤣
Funny you mentioned San Francisco Rush because I'm pretty sure this game was made by the same team. It even borrows some resources/elements from that game.
You're right. This was developed by Midway Games. It came after Rush and Rush 2. I guess they just decided to basically make a new racing game out of the framework of their previous series.
"Till it had me driving through this plowed field..." 8:00 Looks like it's intended to be a fire break. Gaps in large amount of trees to prevent the spread of wild fires.
That roller coaster is a famous old one called The Big Dipper at the Boardwalk in downtown Santa Cruz. That was actually pretty fun to see, I've never played this one before. Also re: the San Diego one, there's a historical tourist attraction in the San Diego harbor where you can tour an old WW2 aircraft carrier which was clearly the inspiration there. San Francisco had both the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate which is cool, Monterey (I'm from between Santa Cruz and Monterey) had its beaches, cannery row made famous by John Steinbeck's novel, of course the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, and then the equally famous Pebble Beach golf course where the US Open (I think) takes place.
Cal Speed gives me such great memories, specially the Silicon Valley, Central Valley and San Francisco levels. Great tracks for a great game. Midway completely dominated the racing genre in N64, that's for sure!
Love it kidda and your dedication to streaming and you love what you do and it shows .. I cant catch you on Twitch so ill watch everything on You Tube and im following everything you do, so thanks for sharing.
My local arcade used to have this. The arcade version was better of course, especially when you got to the mall and there were actually people you could hit with your car!
Some of the hills in this game bring back memories of nightmares I used to have when I was little. I'd dream that I was in the car with my parents as we were coming up to a bridge, and the ramp leading up to it would be impossibly steep, like almost completely vertical. As for the game, I liked it. I never played the arcade game, but I though the N64 version was fun.
There is almost a short cut with crazy scenery on every track, it hurt so much to watch them passed by 😂 This came with my N64 when I was 5 years old and I played it into the ground haha, there’s so much to unlock!
I never played this one, but having grown up California it's pretty spot-on. This is the closest representation of California ever captured in a game. For reals though, I grew up near Mt Shasta, and there is a series of caves you can go to as a tourist attraction called "Shasta Caverns." Amazing they actually included it.
It's funny with that San Diego track in that it's somewhat believable. Just south of SD downtown is the naval base. Coronado Island has a huge bridge so that aircraft carriers can go underneath. Like 2 miles south of that is Mexico lol.
This is one midway game I never got my hands on, but I do remember playing some arcades of it. Funny you cut to the marble race screen, just as I get a notification from the PBP discord lol
I also keep waiting for Cruisin' USA. I remember trying to get to / beat the hardest difficulty (if there is one) but after four or five playthroughs I don't think I could get beat the computer anymore. Playing in first person with the flies hitting the windshield was hilarious and terrible. Couldn't see a thing. I loved it.
3:18 while not a wooden roller coaster with inspection walkways all between the tracks, there *was* a 5-lane racing roller coaster in Osaka a few decades ago called Daidarasaurus
I do not know how far you're into the N64 library, but I would find it cool if you would do the effort to make a list of the games you've yet to play once you hit the half-way point at 197 out of 394. Maybe some additional comments on how the games you've played to far hold up after playing that many? And, lastly, to which 10-20 games are left in the pool you're looking forward to playing the most.
Hey everyone, these should be back to weekly now. Thanks for sticking with the channel
thanks for uploading these!
Always!
You should maybe try to just pick some games you actually want to play for the next 5 or so. Might break up the grind.
Thanks for sticking with the series!

I was in the Navy and stationed in San Diego for about a year. Believe it or not, this game's track is 100% accurate.
Agreed. The whole track was a perfect depiction of a typical Saturday in San Diego.
You might be kidding, but it legit gives me San Diego vibes. The freeway, crossing into TJ, USS Midway museum. Not bad for an N64 race track.
Born in SD here and came to say this track very accurate.
I too recall driving through a couple of aircraft carriers to get to mu destination in SD!!
"Is this the sewer?" That sir, is the L.A. "River" and it might as well be.
Dammit I came here to post that but you beat me to it

I’m legit impressed with the work in the level design. They incorporated the city landmarks really well. Definitely captured the vibe
5:03 that CPU slamming into that semi truck, causing it to drift was pretty sick. More games need semi drifting on impact.
The narration for the race was fantastic. I couldn't imagine being able to narrate it that well live without a script.

The roads being unfinished is the most California accurate aspect of this game.

Thab: “Is that the sewer?”

I feel like this game is more fun if you’re familiar with California- the iconic landmarks and environments are really fun to see. Can see why it wouldn’t be as fun if you hadn’t spent much time there.
2:00 That's a VGA connector. VGA is analog monitor connect, predates DVI which is digital.
Came here to say this. I’m old.
Yeah, was surprised to hear him state this. Judging from the games he played as a child he should be old enough to remember VGA himself.
Here’s a fun tip for racing games… if you hold UP on the joystick all the time and roll it left to right when turning you can drastically reduce the turning sensitivity in high sensitivity games.
I have a used controller that was clearly used for racing, because it has a groove on just the top half of the control stick base
5:05 love the chatter complaining about how everything looks rundown once you cross into Mexico from San Diego. I have a feeling he's never actually taken the trip to Tijuana. It really do be like that.
Honestly this series is the only thing I look forward to each week.

All the studios are actually in Burbank, CA. Hollywood is a tourist trap.
Good Friday ladies and gentlemen! We are so back!
The best part of this game is to find all of the secret shortcuts in each map
Pretty sure the part of the Highway 1 track at 8:15 with pools of water that Thab was confused about is supposed to represent Hearst Castle.
That what I'm thinking, too.
I knew I was missing something! Glad you're back with these!
Holy crap, my memory of this game was utterly buried until I saw you could choose the golf cart. I have distinct memory of driving the golf cart on the roller coaster track. Thanks for this blast from the past
In the arcade version the mall actually has people in it and when you hit them the sprite just flies away with a funny scream
Moving the screen around "cheat" may have been a way to center it in a arcade bezel.
Knowing OoT is coming someday since it was on his Twitch, but never seeing it appear as winner for his next video.
probably in a year homie. Isn't it 1 a week bc of editing? I think we are WAAAY behind.

Shasta and Mountain Dew how many soda companies had advertising deals with this game?
Well, Shasta is a California company so that at least makes sense.
