- A fantastic 70s fusion record. High energy playing with great melodies on top. Please don't complain about the poor quality of some of the tracks as that was a worn out LP I (re)discovered while going through my vinyl collection.

No one solos on the Minimoog like Sancious...blisteringly good, an expressive virtuoso, and a very individual sound. Awesome.
Bought this LP after buying his 1976 Transformation (The Speed of Love) LP while I was in college. Both those albums have an indefinable mythic quality to them, I think. I can't describe the mood they put me in, but it's complex and combines something of the qualities of mystery, melancholy and wonder. I didn't know who Sancious was, nor what jazz fusion was at the time... just knew that these albums were unlike anything I'd ever heard (still are). Astounding musicianship and composition. Both these albums deserve to be much better known. Like them far more than other much better known works from the same time/genre.
The master at his best. This is the music i grew up with. I feel for the youth today. They have been fed McDonalds while were given home cook meals,. That music had substance.. My full respect to David Sancious,,a master musician
Oh, music is all but dead, bro. It's beyond sad. Music has been a primal force in my life since I was like 11 or 12...good music, I mean. I think back to the thousands of times listening to great music has helped me through rough times or enhanced good times, and to think that that is missing from kid's lives today makes me sad. Young people need great music in their lives, and...instead, they've got garbage. And it's worse than just "bad music". I think a lot of it is unhealthy. It doesn't promote positive intellectual growth. And that's going to cause problems for them in their adult lives. My opinion, man.
***** I couldn't agree more. Well said
Here's the thing though, its not the music they have or are being fed, its a person's willingness to look beyond the box, to chance further than the shit they are spoon fed by popular culture. TBH, the jazz I listened to in my 20's, in the late 80's, was stuff like Earl Klugh, Bob James, Steve Kahn, Brecker Brothers (though some of their stuff still is good), and a lot of jazz that was great for its time, but it didn't hold up over the years --- AND I evolved.
I am not gonna get into details of who, as it would take way to long, but lets just say the jazz I listen to now is FAR beyond the scope of the smooth stuff from the 70's/80's....
___ it is up to each individual to break free of the constraints were are expected to inhabit. Each of us has the potential to BREAK OUT, and this stuff here is BREAK OUT (just heard of David for the first time tonight) Its up to each of us, don't blame the McDonald's feeding tube, none of us are stuck eating from that.... hahah
There's still a lot of great music nowadays! Just have to be willing to look. That may be something that is wrong with the younger generation (my generation being as though I am 19) people aren't willing to look for music and think outside the box.
I'll never forget my introduction to David Sancious. It was a Friday night in Melbourne back in 1979 - walked into a record shop and they had the album 'Just As I Thought' playing in the background. Genius... one of my all-time favourite musicians!
Saw DS & Tone in 1976 at the Jaberwocky (sp?) Club in Syracuse, NY opening for Tony Williams Lifetime. Talk about a Jazz Fusion wet dream! Had the honor of working with David with Jack Bruce and Friends in 1980. I'd love to see him again.
Jack & Allan Holdsworth were in Lifetime back then, right?
I am going to see him at the Iridium in NYC in May
Just ordered another vinyl copy of this album for my progressive music program on ktep.org Thursdays at 10pm. Ordered the Transformation album too. This stuff is ageless.
This is the one band I never saw that I agonize over..... David and this band are amazing.
the best unknown album of all time
I always wondered about that !!! he was a great back then !
David is still out there killin' it! He'll be pulling up to my home in Maine tomorrow and then we're off to do a big show with drummer Joe Bonadio! Sky Church Hymn #9 is on the setlist.
I met him briefly in Ithaca NY when he was touring and when this album first came out. He was a phenom, and I told him so.
And this keyboard and guitar phenom then disappeared into thin air. There's an unwritten story here.
Bought this for 99 cents in the cut out bin along with the David Sancious LP and Gentle Giant's Free Hand Lp (all for $3 total). Best money I ever spent back in 1976 at the Frankfurt PX. I immeditely recorded these 3 Lps on my reel to reel and would go to sleep with them playing until the deck turned them off at the end of the tape. There were others such at 11th House and Herbie Hancock, but these 3 were and still are my favorites.
Haha! Well, I'm amazed....I haven't heard this in decades! I bought this record while still in high school. I had no idea who it was, or what it was. I bought it hoping it'd be good. I've loved good music ever since 8th grade, and was always turning my friends onto music. I was sort of the "fusion guy" in high school. Anyway, back then, money was in short supply, so buying records on faith, like I did with this one, didn't always pan out. I wasted my money on some real stinkers. But this album blew my fucking mind! I was like "Score!!". It's really nice hearing it again...after so many years. I'm guessing I bought this record sometime around 74 or 75? Thanks, man!
Thank you for posting this! I burnt this tape and LP out. Earnest Carter is an amazing drummer! Davids screaming synth leads! I have tried for years to find this! Peace from Detroit MI. THANK YOU !
Saw these guys in 74 in Tampa and what a show. Tone opened for Billy Cobham and I was blown away.
This is a fantastic piece that I haev not headr since my turntable broke years ago. No with a refurbished Thorens 124 and your reminder I am stoked. I used to play this on a jazz show on a local radio station in 1976. wow! Love Music
THANK YOU..! THANK YOU !!...I've always looked for this..I have the LP but it is in the basement of my Dad;s house in Mexico...
Just recently discovered David in the last couple of years even though I've been a big fusion fan since the 70's. Somehow I missed him back then. Been looking at older videos of Sting live and have come to be a big fan of him. What a talent !!! Not difficult to see why Sting wanted him in his band.
Lucky enough to see him in NJ in the 70's... My fathers place and in NYC. One of the Most Significant composers & multi talented musician of our time. I think I have memorized every note of Forest of feeling and Transformation (Speed of love)
My freshman year at North Texas State . Heavy listening to this album. So many dimensions.
Was cool to later see Sancious, Cobham, Jack Bruce, and Clem Clempson on SNL.
Thanks for posting!
Terrific '70's fusion album.Haven't heard this in years(still have the vinyl in storage somewhere). I saw David Sancious perform live with Stanley Clarke at the Santa Monica Civic in LA. I think it was Clarke's first solo tour, supporting "School Days"after he left RTF.
At one point in the show Clarke and Sancious did a piano/upright bass duet and it was some of the most beautiful piano improv work I've ever heard. The audience gave David a standing ovation after that segment. I think they were both a little taken aback by the response but it really was that good. I really miss that period of incredible music. So much talent.
Haha the vinyl sounds makes it sound more classic.
There's energy on the Vinyl.
I saw David & Ernest when they toured with Springsteen's band performing Bruce's first two LP's, they kicked ass then, this was released later that year!
Thank you so much for this...it is my first listen tonight, and after only the first 3 minutes of the album...my jaw is on the floor.WOW!!!
ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIMZ !!!!!!!
A dude that paid homage to Keith Emerson, McCoy Tyner and Jimi Hendrix. So talented...I was 19 when I bought this and playing in a young jazz rock confusion band called Argos in Birmingham. Michigan. Part of my mid-70's soundtrack.
I thought I would never ever find this ! Thanks a GAZILLION !
The first time I heard this I was playing in a Prog-Rock/Jazz Rock confusion band just out of High School and I just wore this record out. Thanks for putting this up....so awesome.
This is a brilliant album! David Sancious is genius! Thank you for posting.
What a great album. Used to play it all the time on the radio-WJKL/The Fox. Thanks for putting it up!
I bought this album at release because Billy Cobham produced it, and I was blown away. It has aged wonderfully. Not only is the playing incredible, but the composition and arrangements are imaginative and exciting. Even the recording holds up, so kudos to Billy Cobham, the engineers and mixers for ensuring such a great sound.
Gary Still, you have hit it. Of course, not everyone in the 70s was listening to this, but at least it was there for the taking, so to speak. I saw DS & Tone warm up for Jefferson Starship (WHAT?), knowing only that he had just quit Springsteen's band. All of us were so blown away we had to leave after his set (lest the pop of JS harsh our sublime state of mind). This and Transformation are still two of my favorite recordings. But my story is eclipsed by Phil Romano's (below). Brother, you were there!
Thanks for sharing...miss his music...
Ultimate Album!
Near imposable to find on CD but does exist. One of the best jazz albums ever. Holds it's own with Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea etc. I can't believe he was the foundation of Springsteen's E Street bands first 3 albums.
this is an old favorite! Thank you!
Love Sancious- Amazing music!
thanks! fond memories.
This amazing music, a large part of MY life. Thank You All for sharing!! Thank You David and band!!
This was done over 45 years you Keyboard fans. There’s more to music than Sherinian and Rudess guys. Where do you think they got it all from?
Great album. Sancious is so multi talented.
THANK YOU, MY FRIEND!
awesome, thanks for this.
Very nice indeed!
He used to tour with Springsteen back in the seventies and i caught him at the Main Point in Philly doing a side concert. I had no idea what to expect and when I got this, i was floored. (It was the same E Street Band band that featured Yuki on violin.)
This is really good fusion -- there was a lot of not very good fusion back in the day. I have always wondered ("always" since 1975) if Springsteen would have taken a different direction had David and Ernest Carter stayed with him? Probably not -- Springsteen was very supportive of David over the years, but they were different artists with their own vision. But I thought Springsteen's work with David backing him was his best, musically speaking.
Bruce Springsteen lost an incredible musician in 1975. Sancious is phenomenal.
The only guy to live on E Street in Bruce's band .
E Street in Long Branch , NJ .
Listen to Dave's genius in the second Bruce S. LP .
I saw him play at the student center at Rutgers in 75-76 timeframe
I remember when that happened but missed it, I saw him at the Bucks County Playhouse shortly afterwards
Epic!!!
'Transformation (The Speed Of Love)' fr. 1976 is also a great album!
THANKS THANKS THANKS!!!!!!
