For me it's simple: Some really great visuals and an interesting concept, also really dug the Horror elements and certainly a fun Bruce Campbell cameo. But messy script and story, especially the ridiculousness of Wanda's whole plot. I ended up just detesting her character and not in the fun way that you're supposed to with a great villain. Also focused more on Wanda and America than Doctor Strange himself... the name in the title. Also can't forgive for how they did Reed Richards, Black Bolt and Professor X, that was just downright dirty.

When I first heard that Raimi was directing, I was enthused. Dr. Strange has always been a "weird" character, so Raimi was a great idea. But I was most interested in where Bruce Campbell would show up.

Honestly I don’t know how you can sympathize with Scarlet Witch. If her children had actually existed in her universe & she lost them, then I could understand her doing all this of shit to get to a universe where exist. But they NEVER existed in her world. She created them from her powers in a simulated reality she made for herself. Why should I care about these literal figments of her imagination

Dear goodness, if all the characters just sat down and had a good chat like adults, they could have easily resolved everything in this movie. It was damn tedious cos none of it mattered, since the only person who could stop her was herself. SOME nice set pieces (The castle attack was just dumb), but the script (As presented in the final film) was pretty mediocre. The Actors were mostly good though, given the poor material they had to work with.

Love story? The movie starts off by cucking Strange as he attends the wedding of his love. When he says to her at the end that he loves her she does not say it back (not even I loved you but we cant be together, just a straight up implied I dont love you) And we are told that in all the multiverses where everything is possible, he never ends up with her. Or anyone else. Fans are naive if they think that is an accident in the writing. Or that it is an accident that he is no longer the sorcerer supreme as we are constantly reminded before he bows to Wong at the end. There is a political agenda being pushed here. I know you are smart enough to see that Oliver. No matter your political preferences there is no denying they disrespected Strange a lot here. You could write out his simping for the girl that doesnt love him and the film wouldnt lose anything. So why is it in there? It is bad writing AT BEST.

I saw this and Everything Everywhere All At Once, and holy shit there is just no comparison. Everything is just so much better in every way. They even have a similar "are you happy" and "what if" theme, but Everything actually addresses it throughout and makes a point of just how a multiverse results in your life looking absurd and petty in comparison. But in Strange, the theme they pull out of their ass is just some stupid moral temptation. "If you try to go to other universe, you are bad". Why? Ummmm, demon magic I guess? It is irrelevant to the viewer.

@@ThanatoselNyx I don't know how often people do that either. A big part of a theme is applicability. You can't have your story's message be "and that's why giving whales sponge baths is wrong"; it won't resonate with people. But Everything's message is about your life being meaningless and how to deal with that, there is applicability unlike Strange. It's a superhero movie, sure, but even that should pass basic standards.

Good review as always Oliver. I was really excited for this film more than any other one that the MCU had on their slate since it was announced about two years ago. Bennett Cumberbatch is one of my favorite actors now, and he's definitely made me a Doctor Strange fan to the point that I've actually invested time into reading the stories from the comics. I've seen this new film twice at the cinema, and I do agree that it's good, but not great. I'd probably hand it a B or B+. I was glad that Sam Raimi was brought along to add a different flavor to the MCU. While I liked Scott Derrickson before, and wouldn't have minded him coming back, Disney allowing Raimi to come in and flex turned out to be a good move I'd say. You're right that this wasn't the game changer it seemed to be hyped up to be. I think the word on the street just got out of control, and folks probably went into this expecting a lot more epic in scale. I admit I fell into this trap too. It wasn't that, but for what it is, it did a good job telling the story it wanted, which was largely wrapping up WandaVision. I am excited for the future of Doctor Strange in the MCU, and judging from the end we'll be seeing more of him. Hopefully Mordo is back as well.

My problem with the Wandavision stuff was as someone who hasn't even seen an episode of that show I was totally lost with that whole plot and her motivations for turning evil, especially for children that weren't even real. I know quite a few people had this same problem. MCU needs to remember that not everybody has the time to watch all their tv shows. Everything doesn't have to interconnect so much into this giant web of the gazillion shows and movies, that just makes everything convoluted and confusing for the average viewer. Since this was supposed to be a Doctor Strange sequel it should've felt more like an actual sequel with some subtle nods to Wandavision for fans of that show but not confuse everyone else. The MCU has gotten far too complicated and needs to simplify things a bit like the first 3 phases.

fell asleep about 90 minutes in , woke up for the last 5 minutes or so , this became tedious damn fast and i struggled just to stay awake for those first 90 minutes , it's a long and laborious watch and the motivation of the antagonist is silly as all hell
the america chick with those universe jumping abilities had as much appeal as damp underwear after exercising , totally bland and inconsequential , when she's not on screen you forget she's even in the movie , then she shows up again and you're just thinking , oh yeah , the character meant to appeal to the younger demographic but serves almost no purpose is here , yayyy . terrible , just dreadful , a total charisma vacuum
i thought it was okay only because BC can make anything even remotely interesting , he could just stand around and look at the camera and there is a dynamic cinematic element happening but even he couldn't save this over stuffed turd from disappointing me

    Great review as usual, Oliver.
It's weird that you called out the visual effects as being a highlight. I thought they were terrible. The battle with the giant octopus eyeball tentacle creature looked unbelievably fake.
I also had a big problem with the action sequences. Why do Doctor Strange and Wong need to be capable of Kung Fu style martial arts? They employ magic, they don't need to be able to do parkour and wushu, and neither of them look physically capable of doing such when they're just standing still normally. It's only through the magic of special effects that these unathletic individuals can be on screen doing this nonsense.
I realize that they want to add some more visceral thrills on screen and to have some more physically dynamic stuff going on vs just someone waving their hands and casting some spells, but it's just not believable. At least if you're going to give them martial arts skills make it something that is believable for their character, like some Tai chi -esque moves that involve dodging or redirecting the energy of their opponent, but only use a low level of physical energy on the part of the practitioner.

This movie was a blast in IMAX 3D. Thoroughly enjoyed it as Sam "The Man" Raimi makes an Evil Dead/Marvel crossover. His use of full frame 3D in Max was a feast for the eyes and his sense of style fit the story well. I hope he gets another Marvel film. Danny Elfman was a great choice as well.
I loved Wanda as the big bad. Olsen played it well being both creepy and sympathetic in her quest. She has become, arguably, the most tragic character in the MCU now having lost everything, including her soul.
One criticism I have is I can't stand the name "America Chavez". It might just be the way everyone in the film says it but it irked me every time she was mentioned. The actress is...fine. The character is also...fine. I think she should have had her own coming of age show on Disney Plus instead of being in this film, maybe hooking up with Ms. Marvel or something that a 13 year old would enjoy.
There had to be a different, more mature, character in the Marvel line up to fill her role, maybe Rachel Summers to introduce mutants? I don't know.
Overall a fun movie that I hope gets a 3D Bluray release.

I felt that this Doctor Strange movie is part of Wanda's tragic story to her path of self-discovery to her happiness. Marvel should do a Vision series from the Tom King comics, which Vision create his own family to live in the suburbs and he gets there by meeting with his creator's wife Pepper Stark and she allow him to stay at one of Starks labs and there he has the necessary materials to create his family. The ending of that series Wanda makes a cameo appearance, but this is an after credit for what happens in Wong's movie, and you don't see Wanda and Vision together again unitil Wong's movie.
Agatha Harkness, I think is getting a series which Marvel can explore how Agatha can help Wanda right after what happened in the MOM movie, she seeks Agatha's help as she warns Wanda, she will need but Wanda is unaware that a mystic force has been watching her and is coming to drain her powers Nightmare or Mephisto most likely Nightmare sent by Mephisto because she destroyed the Darkhold and Mephisto need to restore that corrupting source back into the multiverse. These ladies Wanda and Agatha join forces to take on Nightmare and get help from Wong because Doctor Strange is still off planet. Before all that is started Agatha inform Wanda that her kid's spirits are still on earth, and she can help her find them.

I felt they promised a lot and didn't deliver.
The whole point of the 'multiverse of madness' was it gave you the impression it would be a reality bending nightmare ride for Strange and instead it was, as you said, two worlds.
It would've been so more effective if they'd spent a few minutes in lots of realities.
The whole point of the multi verse is anything is possible.
In the comics, the stories of Strange, are as mind blowing as the art.

@@coolguy700able I've just had a thought: Maybe the Madness in the title isn't the multiverse but the REALITY and effect of loss?
From Wanda's POV: Not being able to accept the REALITY of loss and how it corrupts her in destroying others who have what she doesn't.
From Doctor Strange's POV: Having accepted loss but struggling to create a new REALITY?
When you refuse to move on it ruins what you have left and what you could have moving forward?

Didn't like it much. Cumberbatch seemed a bit all over the place without exhibiting much of Strange's character. Olsen's Scarlet Witch rightfully was the best in the movie. The bit about the Illuminati was quite pathetic. If that was to intro the Fantastic Four, it was a massive bleh. Disappointing flick all in all, and I'm not holding out much hope for the next Strange installment in the Dark Dimension.

Pretty accurate review. It's a solid MCU entry. There have been worse MCU movies before. This one is entertaining enough. I thought the continuation of Wanda's story was pretty good. Also... It might not seem like a high stakes MCU film but... It's definitely paving the way for the next big event. Also I enjoyed listening to Danny Elfman's score, and thefilm is definitely made for 3D. And I usually don't like to go see 3D.

I’m a big fan of Doctor Strange, especially as embodied by Benedict Cumberbatch, and I loved WandaVision (for the most part…I had issues with the finale and really appreciated this film is, in effect, the true finale). I really enjoyed this film, but at the same time I’m not ignorant to the flaws and appreciate well-measured critiques of it. I definitely agree with what you said about the lack of multiverses (and madness, if we’re to be honest) and it’s a shame we didn’t get that (What If was better at that). I really like having so many superhero options in one universe, and won’t be burnt out anytime soon.
