    Many friends of mine have told me they´ve learned English through watching movies. At first they watch it with subtitles in their native language and then the second time with English subtitles. This isn´t something they always do but they end up grasping words and this helps them practice their listening skills. Also, by watching movies it provides the learner with more realistic forms of structuring sentences. Apart from this it is very entertaining for the student to watch some of their favorite actors in movies while they are practicing their listening skills. There comes a point where they may forget they are learning and just enjoy it.

    I like the idea of delaying subtitles. I'm a native English speaker but I watched this because I've been learning German for a few years and I just started learning Spanish. German speakers and especially Spanish speakers talk a lot (I mean A LOT) faster than most English speakers. So I like hearing any and all language learning tips. Thanks for sharing this video! :)

    This is a great technique! When I was learning English I did the first option, the movie with subtitles but I wans't aware that I was practicing reading more than listening but I also did what he mentions, I tried not to read the subtitles and that's how I practiced more. Therefore, I really consider that I would use this technique when teaching English.

    In my opinion, this would be a good idea to learn without movies and increase your listening and reading skills, because also for me listening is one of the most difficult skills to develop ut depending on the accent that the other person, also if the other person is speaking fast. I don't have an idea about the delayed subtitles but I think is good because first, you are focused on listening and later to read to reaffirm if what you listen is correct or what you understand.

    I partly agree with your point of view. I've got my own English learning period and I have learned much valueable experiences that might be useful for you guys. You can read my own phases as a reference:
    - Watch video with subtitles and NOT catch up with them
    - Watch video with subtitles and CAN/EASILY catch up with them
    - Watch video with subtitles, easily catch up with them and watch them twice. The second time I turn off the video's subtitles.
    - Watch video with subtitles, can catch up with them and moves his lips without making sound according to the subtitles.
    - Next level, Assume that I have a sentence " I like apple and I'm gonna eat it right now", I have a way to practice my Listening skill that similar to what this video suggest us, but I dont need to stop the video.
    1) I will pay all my attention to listen to "I like apple", if I can here that I will continue just listen without subtitles with the other part of the full sentence "and I'm gonna eat it".
    2) Otherwise, If I can't understand the part "I like apple", I would immediately read the subtitles with the part "and I'm gonna eat it".
    Thatz how I call my method is "Delay Subtitles without Stop".
    Hope it help you, my pals.

  • @vinyziks323

    I think its not the best technique for one reason:
    when you are listening and you dont understand it, you are going to read the subtitles (that will appear in 1s or 2s), and while your reading the subtitles you dont pay attention in the next scene and you don't pay attention in what they are saying and then you have to read the subtitles again, and so on
    So i think watching a movie twice is better.

    • @EngfluentPlus
      @EngfluentPlus  7 лет назад +129

      Excellent point. However, I never claim that this is the most effective way to learn English. I came up with this technique simply because it allows me to learn English through movies without getting bored.
      Sure. I’ll probably get better results by watching the same movie 2 - 3 times. But I’m not going to do that. Why? Because it’s too boring. My life is not just about learning English. I have other interests and hobbies to pursue. I’m not going to spend hours each day learning English that way.

    • @vinyziks323
      @vinyziks323 7 лет назад +39

      Yes, you are right. Watching movies twice is quite boring and this is a 'funnier' way. Just like everything in life there are advantages and disadvantages. So you just have to choose the best one for you. :)
      Have a nice day/night

    So I came on this channel a couple of months ago. I was not able to understand everything on those clips, but today I understand almost everything. I'm happy I've improved. I can even watch some movies without subtitles as soon as there are no slang and their weird expressions. Now, I focus on speaking, and I know it's a matter of time.

      Lack of practice makes it. You have to find people to speak. I broke that barrier working in foreign company.

      @@UKamaleshR At least you can improve your listening, writing and reading. If you're quiete pretty girl you can easily find partner from the internet. However before speaking be ready to be able to speak with someone, otherwise no one wants to proceed conversation with person who doesn't understand a word and unable to say anything.

    First of all, thank you for the video. This is that I think. This technique would be perfect if all movies were like the two examples showed in your video, with pauses between the dialogues. But the movies are not (all the time) like that. It would be extremely strassing to try to follow the audio and the subtitles. I disagree that we can improve the listening with subtitles. Here is my technique. I choose an English movie that I already know in my native language or in another language that I know. This helps to better understand the movie and keep the motivation to keep watchning, to improve vocabulary and oral comprehension. Is the movie is good and we love it, there is no problem to watch several times.

      I'm little bit in disagree with you,I think you can improve your listening skills with two minutes dalayed however it will be better if you remove totally subtitles and if I understood you active your native languages subtitles in order to understand the english movie

      You're right. I think the same. When you don't know many films the good idea is to watch films in 2x or 3x speed in native leanguage to know what actors speaks, or maybe read transcript and next watch in English :)

    watch without captions and when you miss something, turn them on to catch unclear words. Then, you want to turn them off and listen that fragment over and over till you understand it completely.
