Beautiful "horse" & setup Have a fantastic experience on the Badlands. Pity your buddy couldn't make it. Clint Eastwood used to love riding solo. Next town you're passing through, grab that poncho & cigar ! 😁 Sure you'll be fine ☀️ 🎵 Andalucia 🎵
Sad about Nic not joining you Chris. Go well mate and fingers crossed for a safe and healthy ride. I have the Redshift ShockStem Pro and the Redshift Seat post suspension .... I find that both are brilliant for ride comfort.
The Redshift stem will make your lighting very wobbly esp with the Sixpack mounted upfront. Every little movement, and there's a lot, is amplified. But still a great stem, offering a lot of comfort. Good luck and have a good ride!
Great advice with the olive trees - That's what I did the first night out in the 2023 edition, though i was too tired to even think about what kind of trees they were. Though I did spend a lot of time wondering if the irrigation lines all around my sleeping bag would suddenly start pumping out water in the early AM !! Hope you had a good run in the 2024 edition.
Good evening from Spain 🇪🇸 Chris 👋......very sorry to hear about Nik not riding alongside you. Regardless, I'm certain you're going to have a good Badlands 👍. Impressive spec on the Argon Chris 👍
Good luck at Badlands, Chris. I'll be curious to know how the Redshift works for your nerve damage. I broke and dislocated my right elbow, and separated my right shoulder - all in different bike wrecks, and have experienced nerve damage ever since. I'm always looking for ways to mitigate it.
I had the same thought about going for some trail/ extra platform pedals for extra support. Do your shoes actually make contact with the extra platform of the pedals? Apparently, not all shoe / platform pedal systems do.
Killer sled Chris. Thinking of Wolf Tooth + larger cassette on both road and gravel bikes. Like you, a few wrist surgeries makes manual shifting a pain...literally. Hope to upgrade road bike to 105 Di2... Installed Red Shift stem on Felt Broam gravel bike. Really liking it. I set it up to be a bit more compliant that the future shock I have on my Roubaix Sport. May need to play around with the Red Shift ... see if I want to flip it to give a bit more comfort...do you have up set up + or - ? Thanks as always for sharing. Too bad Nic didn't make it. 🚴♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️
Yeah the wolf tooth road link works great I’ve found. Definitely worth considering it as an option. Redshift you can set up positive or negative, just a case of adjusting the polymers
Super interested in your power meter. Never run one before, I've got a GRX 2by on the Canyon Grizl. When I go to 4iiii it's all factory install, did you go that route?
The Áspero is an out and out race bike. Very stiff, maybe a little too stiff for my liking. The dark matter feels more comfortable but still fast. Áspero accelerates quickly but dark matter holds speed better
I feel like the Tailfin bag that goes on the top of the rack has a ton of wasted space. Even with the long extension piece, too much of the bag is under the saddle, even on my 56cm frame. The secret design Chris can't talk about really looks like it might be more usable space.
@@jhoff80 hm. I have a high saddle and the extender, it fits extra bottle just fine under the saddle, but if you have short legs, it might be better as you describe. Ofcourse the new bag behaves as a stuffing bag, more suited for tents and clothing then stuff that way. Not too sure still if that’s what I would want/need from it…
It is smaller. Some people wanted a smaller system. I was one of them because I just end up filling the normal AeroPack with more stuff that I probably don’t need because I have the space to
It’s a supplement to it. Only works with Shimano and you replace the direct link attachment that goes between the mech and the hanger. (The bit highlighted here in yellow: bike.shimano.com/en-EU/technologies/component/details/direct-mount-rear-derailleur.html)
@ChrisHallRides A lot of people online say an 11-40 Deore XT cassette shifts well directly mounted with the 11spd GRX 2X rear derailleur. Did you try directly mounting before installing the Wolf Tooth link?
Congratulations on four Badlands participations, guess you must be record holder ;-)? But isn't this a lottery each year with many more applications than available spots? Statistically seems impossible so how do you manage each year?
First time was a deferred entry from the first edition which happened when we weren’t allowed to leave the UK in covid times. I entered that. Second time I was kindly given a place from my sponsor Schwalbe. Third time was from Schwalbe again. 4th time I entered as a pair as that was the original plan and it’s easier to get a place as a pair generally in events. So 2 times offered entry from a sponsor who also supports the race which I’m incredibly lucky to have had and 2 times entered as normal
Hope you are meanwhile getting better!? Regarding your set-up a question: Specific reason you switched from dynamo setup to battery only? I assume you had powerbank(s), wallplugs to get them charged!? And wouldn't be the Edge 1040 Solar basically the better option for such an event?
Yes the 1040 solar is probably more appropriate but I wanted to try the 1050. There’s loads of opportunities to charge on the route and I had a massive power bank
@@dahonkie as far as i’m aware anyway, none of the other western manufacturers make an 11-39, campy do a 9-39 I believe but that’s ekar so 13 speed, and I haven’t found a Chinese/Taiwanese one in that ratio, either bigger or smaller. Chris may have misspoke and meant an 11-36? Or potentially even an unreleased or pro only cassette from shimano?
sorry to hear your buddy dropped out, thanks for taking us through the setup, and good luck in the race!
Thank you!
You’ve got this Chris! We are with you virtually cheering you on..good luck🚴
Thanks so much!
Great vid, cool and relaxing tunes, good morning and good luck to you on your adventure

They’re fantastic products!
The first second Chris appeared on the screen I thought: Walter White is riding a bike! 😂
Great setup! Im pretty sure you are ready for a great ride!
Hope so!
Chris, put the elevation on 1 of your Garmin screens, next to temp for Badlands and use that in your shot to show the hills. Just an idea.
great :) good luck and safe trip Chris!

Exactly!
Good luck Chris! :)

Oooh tempted to build some wheels with Chris King rear hub and a front SONdelux dynamo hub. Both in metallic red
That would look amazing!
Bummer to hear about Nic -- would have been great to have your own personal mechanic along
Yeah frustrating to be honest but I won’t go into it
I'm very curious about those new pedals, would love an update after this adventure or sometime down the road.
Honestly I’m absolutely convinced on them for ultras
@@ChrisHallRides sounds like a good option for any multi-day ride, e.g. bikepacking
Good luck for the next time! Why did you choose battery light instead of a dynamo one?
That big exposure light lasts so long basically! Long enough for Badlands anyway
6:50 Hey Chris, how did the pedals go? Was your theory correct, bigger platform = more comfort?
Yep absolutely. My theory was right
@ thanks for the reply, mate. Gonna give them a whirl! 🚵♀️
Bon chance!

It’s definitely an option to consider

Yep the lakes definitely do
Good luck! What are those aero bars ?
They’re from Enve
Hi Chris, what model is your helmet? I’m looking for a helmet that is not overly bulbous. 😊
It’s a Lazer Z1 kineticore
Thanks Chris

Enve 3.4s
Curious about the 11-39 cassette - is it a Rotor? Thanks
Yep. Shifts ok but not perfect
Super interested in your power meter. Never run one before, I've got a GRX 2by on the Canyon Grizl. When I go to 4iiii it's all factory install, did you go that route?
It’s one I had years ago in storage and forgot about 😂
Wouldn't the bottles on the fork be more aero behind your seat?? Is this a race or a "ride"?
It is a race over rough terrain - the fastest speed ever is about 19k/h.
I find being able to see the water means I’m more conscious I need to drink it
How would you compare this bike to the old aspero ?
The Áspero is an out and out race bike. Very stiff, maybe a little too stiff for my liking. The dark matter feels more comfortable but still fast. Áspero accelerates quickly but dark matter holds speed better

Gebiomozed sleak

A 11-39 cassette 🤔who is manufacturing that awesome thing?
It’s made by rotor for their 12 speed groupsets
