    Years ago I was dating a girl who's aunt had a friend living in San Diego, the woman invited us over a Christmas dinner. She was a linguist with a PhD from MIT (Chomsky was her PhD advisor). We started talking about A Serious Man, she told me that she had babysat the Coen while she was in highschool and nothing about their films surprised her based on how they behaved when they were kids.

    The top five are in a class of their own, and while you can certainly change the order on a daily basis, I can’t think of any others which deserve to supplant any of those.
    The bottom five all deserve their own praise as well. I’d probably insert A Simple Man in there somehow though. It’s so ironic and funny and tragic, like the Old Testament book of Job it was meant to emulate. (Should we call it an adapted screenplay?)
    I also have a soft spot for Intolerable Cruelty, as the dialogue is spectacular (“tight end”). Maybe a bit silly for some tastes, but it hits all the right notes for me.
    Hail Caesar in my mind is also underrated, especially given the wonderful performances. I wouldn’t say it’s top ten, but it merits consideration, and definitely doesn’t deserve the hate it gets.

    • @geekinwithJamesHancock
      @geekinwithJamesHancock  3 года назад +1

      Massive fan of A Simple Man and Hail Caesar. Always a good indicator of the strength of an overall filmography when you have to make tough choices on what gets left off a top 10 list.

    The Coen Bros are movie making machines that have the Y= m•x + b formula that seems to be interchangeable. One of my favorite scenes comes from my 1st love, Miller’s Crossing. Marcia Gay Harden looking like a femme fatale saunters up to Gabriel Byrne, “I suppose you think you’ve raised hell…” In other words, I own this scene, this moment, & this town. Then walks by. Gabriel Byrne in such a perfect man in hats Irish gangster film, “Sister, when I’ve raised hell you’ll know it.” Perfect. 👌🏼

    Watched True Grit recently , that Portis novel is the best western I have ever read, Henry Hathaway's 1969 version is very good just because of that (with the exception of a couple of casting choices , o John Wayne was good) but I could see the Coen's noticed that Hathaway had missed a lot of the 'grit' of Portis , especially riveting is Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross that was spot on. Especially good (and westerns have been good at this since Mcabe and Mrs Miller) the Coen's really captured the look and feel of the late 19th century. I rate the Coen's True Grit higher than you and it may be the best Western I have ever seen.
    Blood Meridian! O boy! I have thought the same thing ! The Coen's are right on Cormac McCarthy's wavelength, tho god knows how one even makes an R rated film of this story! Have always thought if ever Benedict Cumberbatch wanted an Oscar then playing Judge Holden would be the role!

    • @geekinwithJamesHancock
      @geekinwithJamesHancock  3 года назад

      The only other director who I'd trust with adapting 'Blood Meridian' would be Andrew Dominik. 'The Assassination of Jesse James' is one of my favorite westerns of the 21st century.

      @aajiv1748 3 года назад

      @@geekinwithJamesHancock Over at Wikipedia a capsule history of film attempts , Ridley Scott being in the mix , but that was an auto destruct , which figures. Last swipe at it was James Franco but I don't know what exactly seemingly a producer, tho I could see him with a role in it but not director. What you think , tho he died a year before the novel appeared, Sam Peckinpah would have done with it given a free hand?
      You are one of the few film buffs I have heard mention Blood Meridian here on RUclips tho I have film friends I have talked about it with. Might be the most difficult Western anyone has ever attempted , if that ever gets done!

    Near perfect list. I would probably make No country my #1 but now I have to rewatch Miller's crossing. On a fan note. In the late 90s I was standing a few feet from Steve Buscemi at Philly Airport but was too nervous to speak. so later when I saw his wife I passed my praises on to her. Hearing this Steve waved his thanks as they walked away.
