    It's so funny to me how people expect immigrants to assimilate to their own culture and "speak English blah blah blah" but if someone western moves to another country and respects their culture and assimilates then zomg she's trying to be someone else blah blah. It's so dumb. I'm glad you found yourself Megan! I agree with everything you say. Ignore the haters and do you :3

      VirgoGoGirl Exactly! I always think that. If anyone else moved to america and assimilated there, no one would say anything cause it's natural to assimilate into the place you move to but when it's the other way around all of a sudden you wanna be that race, ethnicity, etc. It's such a double standard and it's weird.

      VirgoGoGirl I think it's because the mentally that west is best gets placed on the westerners who live abroad.

      VirgoGoGirl I've noticed that it all depends on who has (or is perceived to have) the "power". When Americans or Western people like or behave in ways of other cultures, we are either told that we are losing our identities or usurping the identities of other cultures while still maintaining white privilege (not that all Westerners are white). It seems like the Western person is perceived as losing power/becoming "less-than", or on the other hand, acquiring traits that "don't belong to them".
      Myself, being a mixed-race, multicultural person...People seem to expect me to assimilate AND be stereotypically "ethnic" all at the same time. Ugh...Going around in these circles makes me dizzy! I'm just trying to be a citizen of the world, not necessarily one culture over another!

    I'm not for changing your body. Boob jobs, eyebrow tattoos, lip fillers, whatever- it just doesn't align with my beliefs. BUT, I'm not gonna hate on Megan because SHE chose to alter HER body. That has nothing to do with ME. It doesn't affect ME. Megan is happy with who she is and she's beautiful from the inside out and if making adjustments to her body makes her love herself more than who am I to judge? Y'all need to stop worrying about someone's life choices when they don't harm or affect you in any way :) Also, it's impossible to move to a different country and NOT assimilate after 5 years lol. Leave the woman alone she's doing her thang lol.

    Living in Italy I dress up more often here than in America even to go to the store. Here "to dress up" is a sign of good manners. An actual saying here.
    In Germany I picked up recycling more. Very environmentally friendly there.

      I agree with you. People who have only lived in America or are only exposed to that similar culture don't "dress up" was much. I had to dress down because I would always get asked where I was going since I was so dressed up. Being from Mexico I got used to always looking nice because that's part of a "society rule". You kind of adapt to those unspoken society rules for whatever county you decide to move to.

      domrepvega Even moving from one state to another, in America, can be very different in terms of cultural norms. You might dress up more often to go out in the upper East Coast than you would in the South.

    • @Ssookawai
      @Ssookawai 7 лет назад +5

      I agree 100% with you, as I'm now living in Europe for academic reasons.
      "Dressing up" is extremely rooted in the european culture... unlike my own country (Morocco, North Africa), it's not about looking "rich" or even "chic", to get people's attention... it's a lifestyle here and eventhough people are polite no matter how you dress (as long as you're clean), their behavior is more "relaxed" with you if you're dressed up, they reflect back the respect you're showing them.
      Well, I'm still as "usual" eventhough I thought many times about adapting my (inexistent) clothing style but reading you (and listening to others) is giving me enough motivation to start a makeover as soon as possible.

This rant had no logic to it and it was stupid of her to post it. She moved to another country so she assimilated, does that common sense really necessitate a 10 min tangent? Moreover she really should have explained that theres a difference between assimilation, which is necessary for immigrants to live peacefully, and appropriation, which is outsiders taking bits and pieces of people's cultures for no reason other than it's pretty. Aka Becky in "tribal wear" at Coachella vs. Chinese immigrants in America wearing western clothes so they aren't harassed by white people.

    If you lived in Korea and had any shred of self respect, you wouldn't be caught dead going to even the grocery store in pajamas like people do in the US. Even when Koreans are dressed down they still look amazing and stylish.
    Furthermore, who in the world lives among a specific culture for a long time and doesn't begin to assimilate? If you don't like it, don't watch. Megan isn't a robot who only aims to do things that you all approve of.

      probably because it was cool seeing someone of colour in particular talking about Korean culture. I could relate because I want to travel around there teaching English after my degree, was cool seeing how someone of the black community integrated into Korean society. I don't think it was about her clothing, or fashion sense though, those things change with time and with culture, but more about the superficial characteristics that only came through recently. (besides from the comments about skin colour.)
      I loved how she was always true to herself and that really attracted a lot of her viewers especially those in the black community who thought they wouldn't fit well in an Asian society. Great for her that she got a boob job for herself, but for lots of her viewers it probably does give the impression that appearance is the most important thing. Not that I would ever be caught in the super market in my PJs, but i will forever talk about my heritage and promote the culture where im from to those of other cultures, as well as embrace what other cultures have to offer. For us whose similarities with her were being coloured and drawn toward Asian culture but are disappointed by the change from the start, we will just unsubscribe.

      only if you are invested in korean culture, the korean pop wave of have some sort of obsession with that are you jealous. We can all surely say that haters are just mad, but I just hate it with a passion when everyone pulls the jealousy card. Jealousy is not black and white and there are layers to jealousy if someone has it. Unless you aspire to be a youtuber, want a life where people adore you, or just want to live in korea, you should not feel any reason to be jealous.
      Megan's life is her life BUT it's annoying when someone states an opinion about what they think of her, and if it isn't ass kising or mega positive they are labeled jealous. I think Megan needs to stop explaining herself. If I was her I would not have made this video she keeps defending herself. She had the confidence to get her boobs done she needs the confidence and thick skin to not explain herself.

Or when I talk in Korean to one of my Korean friends in Italy they just assume that I'm Korean even if I don't even look asian and of course when I tell them that I'm Italian they are ALL like "omg I guess if you live in asia u become asian"... (Disclaimer: Rant) It's so shameful the black people who come on here and disrespect you because you're lighter skinned. There are so many sources of information about *colorism* and the way it serves to fragment the black community, the way it turns us against one another! We really have people out here who self-discriminate depending on whether someone is "too dark" or "too light" for their own comfort (read insecurity). Despite all of the social movements we have going on right now and this "woke" life people claim to be living, someone can still come on here and say you're "trying not to be black" because you are lighter skinned?? SO DISRESPECTFUL. I get pissed off every time I see someone comment crap like that. I have so much respect for your addressing these things because it can't be easy when you are simply doing what you love and people only come on deck to criticize you for a life THEY WISH they had the courage to live. Also SHOUT OUT to the boobies girl. They are as fleeky as the brows. Still waiting on that update video about how they're doing! Stay bad, stay bougie 😌😘

      Like, black people as a whole, all of us, we need to get it together. We won't prosper if we constantly bring each other down for the smallest of things, like lightskin and darkskin. You know what I hate? When you literally have different features from the standard black look, and people ask me "Oh, you're mad pretty, are you mixed?" Assuming that black people can't be beautiful and _all_ black. We need to rise up as a unit. That's how we'll rise above the current standard for black people at the moment.

      this happens to me, as I love anime and korean dramas. My mom and brothers and I went to a movie the other night, called "The Great Wall," (Great movie, would recommend.) And, 99% of everyone in the movie is Chinese, right? So, when the Chinese people first appeared on-screen, my mom leans over and whispers, "Asian! Anime! Pokemon! Hahahahah" and I'm like...? Alright, mom. .-.

    People are forgetting that identity is fluid and individual. It depends on the person, this is Megan's identity - she may be a mix of several in your eyes, but she's literally just being herself. Especially in a world today where cultures are interacting like never before. So just remember that just because she may not be fitting into your narrow views of what everyone should be, doesn't mean she's "lost her way". Megan, I honestly respect you for your adaptability and capability of being so open to cultures itself. This is what makes you unique.

    Megan didn't lose her identity, but she found new ways to express herself. Ways that appeal to her own personality and not because she's "pressured". If she was pressured she would've left South Korea and went back to her country where she wouldn't feel "pressured." Also what's wrong with assimilating and integrating to a culture you want to be part of? I didn't know that was a sin?? Having your eyebrows/lips tattooed or having your boobies done isn't something attached to Korean culture.. this is all part of the beauty culture that many people from different cultures are being exposed to. These beauty enhancement methods are becoming more available to people everywhere in the world. Megan keep doing what you do because it makes you happy, and your fans including me will keep supporting you.

Going out into the world, exploring new cultures and, as you said, integrating into that culture, does not mean you're losing your identity. It just means you're getting out of that tiny bubble and expanding your knowledge about the world AND growing as a person while doing so. You're learning so much in the process, NOT losing your identity. And Im proud of you for that ^_^

    I just find it funny that she's getting so much backlash for her lifestyle. But I know for a fact that if a Hispanic or Asian person moved to America and didn't learn the language and dressed differently the first thing that would come out of someone's mouth would be "It's America speak English!" She learned Korean Because she lives in Korea. And even if she stayed in America she would look different than how she looked several years ago. You subscribed to her because you want to know more about Korea and because she's a cool person... I just don't get people.

    People are jealous of the fact that you've had so many opportunities and you're successfully doing so well as a foreigner and an African American.I only know you and Sam as the only black people ive seen consistently on Korean television. You're also fair skinned so it makes it easier to enter into Korean culture and be accepted which is a privilege you have but nonetheless you're definitely an inspiration to foreigners who have dreamed to start a career in another country. We came to a completely new country three years ago and settled here. I did sure miss my home country but in some time I got attracted to the style here. The clothes, the makeup, the food everything was different here and I began liking it. Even before we came to live here permanently I had visited this place a couple of times earlier during vacations. Now after three years I'm going back to live in my home country, but that doesn't mean that I forgot their culture or I will forget this one. Now I address myself as multinational (since I was not born in my home country but in the place where we later again settled), even though I don't officially have two nationalities. It's just good to be a part of more than one culture.

Uhh no, they just have really nice and cute things that I enjoy. Or every time I ask someone to listen to I song I'm vibin' to they always ask if it's Kpop and that they don't want to listen to it. First of all, Kpop is the shit. But it's not the only music genre I listen to, so I hate when they assume. Which is why when people ask me now about the music I like or what kind of makeup I wear, I get hesitant and kind of don't want to tell them, because they all like to judge.

    • @candiigurl7893
      @candiigurl7893 7 лет назад +6

      If this is about skin color then she was never "black"; but it isn't because her blood/DNA say otherwise. Her skin color doesn't matter; her genetics say all they need to. Being a race isn't solely determined by skin color- if it were there'd be a crap ton of albinos who'd be within their own pool/demographic because every brown-colored race would've disowned them.
      Even if she started off purple then bleached her skin she'd still be black. Adding to that: if this were a case of self-esteem and she somehow hated herself for her race, some skin-whitening cream wouldn't change a thing. You can't run away from your genes. The reality stands in any and all scenarios.
      *I'm not saying this out of anger or anything and I'm not saying I think this is what you believe either; this is just my response to those thinking that way. ^^

    As a Megan Bowen supporter from many years ago, I can say that I myself had thought, "oh wow! she really changed" now, I don't know Megan personally. I did not know her family structure. I only knew that she was a light skinned black girl living in Korea, trying to make a name for herself. When I had seen the videos of her getting a perm, I thought, "oh she should embrace her curls", "she's really perming her hair, oh no why?", then I thought, "There are many black girls living in North America, doing that, so its not really that different doing it in Korea", then I watched her getting tattoos, and again I thought, "Wow. She's getting this huge tattoo, oh no" but then I thought, "oh wait. I've seen more tattoos on Americans than I've seen on Koreans" then it came to the boob job video, and I thought, "oh man, she's really changed. I don't know how I feel about this" and then ONCE AGAIN, I thought, "Boob jobs, aren't only in Korea. There are tons of Americans and Canadians that I've met that have had tons of procedures done to them." Now after watching your video with your mom, I realized that you are exactly like your mother. And I think thats a beautiful thing, that she as a black girl, feels comfortable to be independent and make a name for herself in a country that isn't very Pro-Black. Everyone is nit-picking at her, when chances are, she could very well have done all that she's doing in Korea, in America, too. I've realized that you need to check yourself before you pass judgment on others.
    For the very Pro-Black people, I understand that you would rather see her as a 4a-c hair textured girl, with every other video talking about black matters, and yes I myself, would like to see more black videos from her. However, you have to realize, that our wishes could very well not be her own wishes. For the most part, Koreans aren't viewing her as a black girl, so she will not have the same experience as other darker black youtubers living in Korea. And thats just the reality. I have watched Megan from years back, and I can say that she has never EVER EVER said anything anti-black, so I am very pleased with that. She's black, and proud. Let her live.

      Karen Wu The only comment I can 95% agree with lol. With long time youtubers you witness their lifestyle change. it shouldn't be a matter of such big discussions. It's somebody's life being shared with you and tbh if we are watching her change it makes no sense to be so critical. But the part were you say you wish she would speak on black issues, I think that's a personal choice. There's a lot of videos about black peoples experiences in Korea Megan has done a few herself. (But from the viewpoint of a lighter skin person)

    This is where I'm just getting annoyed... in the "black community" there are just too many do's and don't's for how we are suppose to act...
    She is whoever the hell she wants to be, she is a BLACK woman in Korea who is adapting to her surroundings, she learnt the language, she got into the trends, the music and the list goes on...
    We should be proud of her instead of trying to drag her down...

    _"We need to end stereotypes but complain everytime someone doesn't fit into their racial stereotypes!"_
    It just doesn't make any sense. Do the people commenting about your choices of clothes, makeup, hair, and beauty procedures not even realize that _they_ are the ones who are actually being racist?
    Trying to enforce the idea that only one certain race can look, act, or dress in a specific way is racism and stereotyping lol. Do as you please Megan and imo it's actually a _good thing_ that you're trying to assimilate into the country you moved too. It makes life easier for yourself and the natives who have to interact with you.

    What cracks me up the most about comments about Megan's race is that they usually come from people regurgitating the colorist attitude we were taught in the United States. Megan has lighter skin so therefore she must not be Black because that belongs to other races, RIGHT??
    Nah! Black people come in all different shades! There are Black people lighter than Megan. That doesn't make them any less Black, just like Megan's skin doesn't make her any less Black. Stop trying to push stereotypes onto people. Like, do some reading and catch your life. :/

    I appreciate that you addressed this so well, especially the color thing. People act like all black people gotta be dark skinned; black people come in all colors and look all different kinda ways. I got black cousins with naturally blonde hair and blue eyes, and ones with dark skin and dark brown eyes. Doesn't define your level of "blackness". I think that cuz you're black, you get extra flack for going outside what people expect or stereotype black people to be. I've gotten that simply for listen to not english music and learning languages. You do you; you've got great style and seem like a really great person.

    These hate comments have a lot to do with how Americans idealize the "American dream" and consider their culture to be the only one important enough to maintain - small minded people who think American culture is the only culture to be proud of , adopt and maintain

    • @Jen321able
      @Jen321able 7 лет назад +4

      I really don't think that's it. I don't care how Megan dresses or anything but I am American and I have to say I never hear born and raised Americans talk about the "American Dream." It seems more like they think she's betraying where she came from and therefore think she finds fault with where they came from.

    • @xXrockyiszhereXx
      @xXrockyiszhereXx 7 лет назад +1

      Yea and that being the reason is because most Americans never left the country, therefore they don't understand what it means to adapt, change, and merge into the culture.

    • @LuhvWhoYOUare
      @LuhvWhoYOUare 7 лет назад

      Being an "African American" (African born and America raised) I can safely say that these haters are jealous😂 If someone moves to America they are expected to assimilate the culture. If you don't speak English, learn it. If you don't dress like us, go shopping. If you have an accent, change it. So for Megan to go to Korea and lean the language and assimilate the culture, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. In fact, that's indirectly what she's been taught her whole life. I've lived in America the majority of my life and have basically "lost my African identity". Yes I'm still African, but growing up in a different country has given me a different culture to my African counterparts who were raised there. We live in a global community, no one is bound by their birth certificate. Let Megan do whatever she wants y'all, it's not that serious.

  • @JpopeJnope

    I think it's ironic, if a western tries on korean makeup and likes it they're suddenly a koreaboo (I mean in general not like that girl that made a video saying she thinks she's japanese, that sort of video just screams identity crisis and that's a serious matter.)
    but meanwhile, many "asian" makeup styles are meant to make asian people look more like westerns and that seems to be socially acceptable. Like?? It's the same damn thing.

    • @yaylemmon3305
      @yaylemmon3305 7 лет назад +10

      totally agree, there are millions of asian people wearing western wing ayeliner, countouring etc....and nothing bad happens, but when western put on some kind of asian trend, they call them koreaboos or stupid stuff like that...it has no sense and it's really unfair. really.n

    5:41 I'm totally in agreement with Megan but that was one comment I had to disagree on. Koreans, Indians, Nigerians, Iranians, etc. who come to America and 100% assimilate always get called whitewashed by their friends and family too. "Why don't you speak your native language?" "Why don't you wear your hijab/sari/whatever clothing?" "Why don't you cook Naija food?" "Why are you ashamed of your heritage!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!" This type of shit happens to everyone. It's high time it stops, but the concern is understandable from disenfranchised cultures. Korean moms would worry too if their daughter moved to Japan and lived a Japanese lifestyle; it would be understandable because Korea was disenfranchised by Japan, so it's like.. a shock to grandmoms and friends to see someone "change". Even if it's a normal change from living somewhere. :/ Anyway, love you Megan!! You haven't changed imo. Just grown into a lovely young woman. People expect women to never grow up from being teenagers or something. Ugh.

      yes i agree the children of immigrants to america tend to get a lot of crap about being too american and its like surprised they were born and raised in america and never left the country why are family surprised that english is their first language etc. instead of blaming/putting shame on people make sure that they know the cultures and respect it.

      I didn't mean friends and family of the people from their own countries. They are in the same
      Situation as me. I moved and my fellow Americans talk about me but they don't talk about the non Americans that move over. Nigerians move over and their fellow Nigerians talk about them but not the people whose country they moved too. Does that make sense? Thanks for your comment.

    • @PloAri17
      @PloAri17 7 лет назад +1

      I'm pretty sure she meant it more as "Americans expect people who moved to America to assimilate to American culture, but when Americans move to another country, Americans judge them because they assimilate to the other culture." She wanted to highlight the hyprocrisy of that mindset.
