I still enjoy the final arc, Yusuke's crisis in wondering what the hell is he even fighting for anymore is pure *chef's kiss* Edit: Enjoyed your rewrite too btw, well done.
I wish it was in the manga. Yep, that was filler. But it was good filler. For what the arc was in the manga, the anime really did their best to make the arc a little longer. Best anime only content besides every pre-timeskip One Piece filler arc, SSJ2 Goku vs Kid Buu, and the Kakashi mask episodes.
Ngl the idea of Yusauke being lost and not even know what he’s fighting for was dope But it really felt like that wasn’t the intended plot and was really just how Togashi was feeling at the time
That was filler. Yusuke vs Yomi was largely offscreen and that moment was never in the manga. Matter of fact, most of the anime content isn’t in the manga. The anime cooked with the filler like with SSJ2 Goku vs Kid Buu.
Yeah there's just so many characters that just show up to say hi and explain a little bit about themselves, and then just leave. I want to know more about the first spirit detective or Raizen's group of friends. Heck there's even more about Genkai's past that could be explored.
15:53 well, Hiei's character is pretty consistently a warrior till the end, and a warrior's promise is one they keep till the end. we see this alot in the Dark Tournament, like when Bui wanted Hiei to kill him, since, if he couldn't beat Toguro, he no longer felt life was worth living. Hiei however, made no such promise like this, so he refused, as he hates to take orders. it is then left ambiguous if Bui committed suicide or not soon after. earlier in the very same fight, when Bui took off his armour, he was open to attack, but Hiei refused to attack him during this, as they both wanted a good fight from one another. then there's a man who is not a warrior in the traditional sense, but lives by a similar code; the greatest gambler of the 90s, Sakyo, who betted his life around sixteen times in his life, and was serious every time. this too, is the warrior spirit. between warriors, a promise means more than anything. as does respect for your enemy. this is the warrior philosophy. it is the unspoken rule of battle that whomsoever wins gets to enact their whim, and the loser must sit and watch, as is fair on the battlefield.
Fun fact: The only reason this arc exists is because shonen jump forced Togashi to make. He actually wanted to conclude Yu Yu Hakusho with chapter black because his back pains were becoming too severe to continue making manga consistently
From my research there’s no proof that Togashi was forced into making the Three Kings saga. Hell according to my research Togashi’s editorial staff apparently suggested to him that he should reconsider canceling Yu Yu Hakusho, but Togashi continued the series anyway justifying his decision that it would just be replaced with another popular series.
For all the flak it tends to receive online, I think YYHs final arc and endings positives far outshine the negatives and the final episode and chapters always make me tear up. It speaks to Togashis work ethic and talent as a writer than even when rushing things he delivered a more satisfying, memorable conclusion than the great bulk of battle manga out there.
BROOOOO YOUR REWRITE WAS SOO FYEEE 🔥🔥 I would pay for access to that being drawn/written out or animated 😭 Really really cathartic and entertaining ending to a wonderful dissection of one of the most iconic series of all time in any medium. HxH is where Togashi demands that he’s allowed to explore what he wanted to with YuYu. He learned a lot from the good but especially the bad parts of writing YuYu. You can see and feel it in hxh where he decides to really go against what he already did. For example having the main quartet split to pursue their own agendas rather than being teamed up working together for most of the series. I think because of the hindsight he has HxH is revolutionary and the better series. Nen and the elements it adds to the series are feats of creativity that are unparalleled in fiction. HxH is my number 1 for this and many other reasons, but YuYu, being the first anime or manga I was introduce to as a child holds a very special place for me and is my 2nd all time fav. So thannk you for contributing more amazing content about to consume and I can’t wait for the hxh stuff comin up! 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
I really appreciate it, and I agree that HXH took YYH Greatness to the next level which is why I’m excited to be covering it soon. Thanks so much for the support!
28:48 this really makes me want a fanfiction rewrite where Yu Yu Hakusho takes place in the Hunter x Hunter world (having Reiki and Yoki just being human aura and Yokai aura that both are used in the same Nen system), with Gon being Yusuke's son who he walked out on, eventually meeting up and then having the true crossover between YYH and HXH through the Dark Continent being the Demon Realm.. alas, a girl can only dream.
Well, if you want, maybe you can write that story. Writing fanfics of stories that we love can be fun. After thinking about a Yu Yu Hakusho and Rival Schools crossover for years, I finally did a fanfic of that myself.
when I found out that Togashi and I shared our favourite Yu Yu Hakusho character, I knew that he was a man of great taste. well, of course, as he's Togashi, afterall. It's quite the shame we never got more of her. definitively my favorite YYH character by a long shot. followed only by Sensui.
I am in the minority that actually really like yusuke’s demon transformation. It’s one of the few anime plot twists that weren’t spoiled for me before I saw the series, so it was epic when I first watched it. I can see why people don’t like it. It comes out of nowhere and it conflicts with stuff I relate to about yusuke. Yusuke represents a young delinquent dealing with a society he feels is against him. He doesn’t have much besides above average strength for a human and creative ways to defeat opponents much stronger than him. Yusuke vs toguro is a David and Goliath story. Yusuke actually being a demon and not only that, a descendant of the STRONGEST demon, defeats the nuances of his character that people find inspiring. The reason goku actually being a saiyan works better because he’s a low class saiyan, still making him relatable because he’s always fighting an uphill battle and persevering with his relentless determination. Yusuke isn’t an underdog anymore for having raizen’s blood. Yomi could’ve been the best antagonist in the series. I love the dynamic he has with yusuke. Yomi represents the order and structure of the demon world while yusuke is like an upstart trying to revolutionize the system. It’s the embodiment of what yusuke represents. He doesn’t know what he wants out of life and he straight up says it in the yomi fight. I like the idea of kurama being the one to fight yomi but yusuke and yomi contrast each other so well. I like the idea of yusuke fighting king Enma for the same reason as him fighting yomi. Enma would represent the oppressive system that yusuke needs to take down. Raizen alone as a character was also a huge wasted opportunity. One of the best designs in the series. He’s wild yet he’s also disciplined, just like what you’d expect out of a demon king. The romantic twist to his character gives him depth too. I would’ve liked to have seen yusuke have a real fight with him and I just would’ve liked to see more of him, especially in battle. Yusuke could’ve trained for fighting enma by finally beating and surpassing raizen. That would’ve made his gigantic increase in power feel so much more deserved. Hiei x mukuro is my favorite ship in the series. Hiei also deals with similar existential angst that yusuke deals with. Hiei basically represents nihilism and darkness and he basically thrives off his own bloodlust. He’s so honorable as a warrior that if he died, he believes that he deserves it because he was too weak. Mukuro saw herself in hiei and it quelled her deep anger that made her so strong. That was the only reason she lost the tournament. Their fight was basically about her showing hiei that his way of living isn’t right and that he should open his heart to others. They contrast each other so well and it feels like the strongest romantic plot point in the series. I think that was the reason she bared herself naked to hiei after he fought shigure. Also her dimensional cutter ability is insanely cool and I love her design. Shigure was a strange final fight for kurama but thematically it really works. It’s strange how characters that have no relevance to each other fight in the anime of this arc but it’s kinda awesome sometimes. Kurama dealt with his own similar themes that yusuke and hiei dealt with through his struggle with his own identity. Kurama’s more consistently my favorite character than yusuke or hiei although it often fluctuates and in my opinion, the shigure fight is the perfect finality for him as a character. Oddly enough, I believe there may be some contrasts with shigure’s suicide representing how he was wrong to make hiei hide his secret from yukina. It also represents kurama giving up his demon side for his humanity. The theme is self acceptance and shigure ends up a tragic character in that his end represents the way hiei could’ve ended up had he not met mukuro. Three kings arc could’ve been the greatest arc in the series. It could’ve probably even been the greatest shonen arc ever made if the fascinating ideas togashi had were allowed to flourish and he wasn’t under the oppressive manga industry. Yu yu hakusho could’ve surpassed dragon ball but the stupid manga industry still hasn’t learned from its mistakes all these years later. Togashi was really voicing his distress through the aspects of his storytelling in this arc. The arc started out incredible, especially after coming off the heels of an unsatisfying ending for chapter black. The most disappointing part is the tournament at the end but the anime really did fix some flaws. Some of my favorite characters returned, Chu, touya, and Jin specifically. I loved Jin’s fight with souketsu in the anime as well as touya’s fight. I wish we got to see the beautiful sezuka’s fight because I also really like him. Shishiwakamaru is just kind of boring to me aside from having cool powers. The return of bui would’ve been very welcome. More so than rando or suzaku but it would’ve been good to have seen both of them fleshed out a bit. I guess them returning was kind of pointless though. Yu yu hakusho is one hell of a good anime and the manga too has some great art. I love it the way it is despite my qualms with the ending. All of my favorite series have some flaws.
I really enjoyed the video and the rewrite...i think kuwabara should of had a bigger role in that arc...it felt odd that he was just reduced to the sideline .
I agree with your thoughts on the video, but I don't agree that Kuwabara should have had a bigger role. Kuwabara's rejection of the self-destructive life of a warrrior that Yusuke, Hiei and Kurama want to lead in Toguro's footsteps is exactly what they swore to never do. for Kuwabara to lash out at the trio who choose to go to the Demon Realm is to fight a needless battle that doesn't fall under any kind of path of justice is completely in-character, and I would be disappointed in the characterization of Kuwabara in the story if Kuwabara completely threw away who he was to fight a fools war, instead of improving his grades to become a functioning member of society. everyone has to grow up eventually, afterall, and the trio's choice to go fight for the Three Kings is the ultimate rejection of adulthood that the trio have chosen, as they do not value their own lives (which is a thematic 'return to form' to the first arc of Yu Yu Hakusho, inwhich Yusuke held no value to his own life, and felt people would be better off with him dead, this suicide idealation once again returning to the narrative.)
I don't think he should have come along with them to the demon world but instead fight for the human world. Maybe following off of the idea in the video with the open portal, maybe some of the demons could have escaped including a human who may have gotten trapped in the demon world and through some mysterious means(Consumption of a demon maybe), they lived longer than a human usually would. I think this can not only keep kuwabara human, but also give him the excuse that "the demons are going rampant and are causing some shenanigans in the human world, so school is shut down until they go away!" As for Kuwabara's training, his cases if he goes the spirit detective route. If not, maybe he loses his powers again and they get redefined depending on the people around him and what he learns, cleverly incorporating his studying and mental maturity into his power. And then when it comes time to fight against the human, he can finally learn why he and his family have such unnaturally high spiritual awareness. I think this cannot only serve as a great final act for Kuwabara for him to leave the spiritual bullshit behind, but he is physically and literally fighting for his future. If he stands out then there won't be a school and there won't be a career for him to work towards. Kuwabara won't be a warrior like the demon trio, but he'll instead be a protector. Or well, as he states, "a true man"
@@Tshow_855 exactly! I think he should of trained with genkai to help protect the human world....they definitely missed that opportunity with the chracter, it would of made sense to have had him involved in help protecting the human world. It didn't make any sense they had demons protect the human world but not actual capable humans like kuwabara is odd as if humans were forbidden to protect their own world, I know it's not too many humans who can fight demons but why keep a very capable human like kuwabara away was just strange
About your rewrite for Kurama, what if he figures out how to use Sacred Energy with his Yoko Form? This would purify his demon form and would symbolize the fact that in Japanese mythology, kitsunes developed golden fur if they lived for a 1,000 years and are considered the wisest of their species? Maybe it gives him plant/Ancient Chinese warrior-themed armor to compliment the martial art robes he wears throughout the series?
I felt bad for the problems that Togashi was dealing with when he was making this arc, and I was glad that he was able to make an ending to the series at all. I personally think that the three kings arc wasn't entirely wasted potential. While a demon world war would have been interesting, I like that the demon world dispute was settled via tournament as it was Yusuke's way of settling the problem in the most peaceful way possible since Yusuke has seen both good and bad demons, as well as Yusuke being used for tournament style fighting. While Asami Sato was sadly underutilized, the fact that she did befriend Yusuke only to no longer trusted him because of differing views is both sad and further representation of Yusuke feeling like he no longer belongs in the human world. I also wish that we had more time to get to know Raizen and see Yusuke actually connect more with his ancestor, but I'm glad that we got some of Raizen's backstory and how it led to his eventual end and Yusuke's origin. As for Yomi, I think that we got plenty from him, especially since he's the true antagonist of the arc. Yomi's connection and history with Kurama and how Kurama's own choices as Yoko Kurama led to Yomi becoming a ruler of demon world and a threat to the human, spirit, and demon worlds is an interesting aspect that adds to the internal issues of identity that Kurama. I also like Mukuro and how she connects with Hiei over their shared painful lives. I ultimately think that Yusuke, Hiei, Kurama, and even Kuwabara go through decent character development. Also, the stalemate between Raizen, Mukuro, and Yomi only lasted for 500 years, not even close to thousands of years. Plus, I think that it was fine that by the end of the series, Yusuke, Hiei, Kurama, and Kuwabara didn't surpass the strongest characters in the series. They don't necessarily have to be the strongest by the end of the series, and I like how the anime version of the story leaves it open-ended when team Urameshi fight in the next demon world tournament to help maintain the peace between the 3 worlds. Some of the points of your rewrites I don't agree with, such as Kurama defeating Yomi as it feels completely forced for Kurama to find the strength to defeat one of the strongest characters in the series, even with the concept of Kurama using both spirit and demon energy. Even Yusuke in the actual anime did that, and he was stronger than Kurama, yet he still failed, which only makes it all the more forced if Kurama did it in your rewrite. Your rewrite does still have interesting concepts that could work, like Yusuke fighting King Emma, even though that shouldn't be much of a fight due to Yusuke's S class status, but it would still be a good moment for Yusuke to question why he fights as you've stated. Overall, I think that the three kings arc was good for what it was, even if it could have been better.
I understand what you mean, and I also appreciate that Togashi got to end to end the series in his own way and his own terms. My rewrite was simply to try to give the series a conventional final arc conclusion, and I only did so because it seemed like togashi left a lot on the writing room floor due to his health problems. It’s more of an alternate ending fanfic, which is why I changed so much, Rather than me trying to correct Togashi. And he comes back better than ever with HXH when he’s allowed to recharge his batteries.
@@The_Ciple Thanks for understanding, and I honestly do understand your ideas for your rewrite. Like I stated, I think that some of your ideas do work, while some don't.
Ooh, I wonder what the group's final forms would look like. I think take one of Hiei's obscure outfits but palette swap with the snow people's colors. Speaking of, what would Kurama's form look like? , maybe like Yoko form but Red hair and red tail? Or to make it more distinct use orange or gold like fox furs. It's too bad the Spirit Detective doesn't have some kind of marking or uniform to implement into Kuwabara's design.
12:35 : Toguro was Upper B Class, the Kakai Barrier protects from A and S Classes from coming through, and Koenma states that if the portal is opened, Demons AS strong as Toguro would come to Human World easily, and A isn't covered there. Hiei and Kurama can't go past the Kakai when they get their Rage Boost because they have reached A Class along with Kuwabara. Even half of the team Kurama gathers are sitting at S class, and if course there is a massive gap between lower S Class and Upper S Class, with Raizen being Upper S WHILE DYING, and at his prime being so powerful that no one at the Tournament would even matter, there's even a chance that everyone at the Makai Tournament could attack Prime Raizen all at once and still lose. 15:20 Not sure entirely about the sub, but in dub at the very least, it is stated that Makuro likes the status quo because she like the Chaos that comes with it, whereas Yomi wants Order. Makuro to me, saw the Makai Tournament as just another form of the same Chaos. It's also very much implied that normally, Makuro was second only to Prime Raizen, and that the only reason she failed to win was due to her letting go of the hatred that gave her a lot of her power. She likely thought at the time that she'd win, and that if not, it would still be chaotic, which is still a win. I didn't see it as out of character at all. IT's also very much said that Raizen only fought for the sake of fighting, and that either side join another would have ended the struggle, he even told Yusuke to side with Makurom which very likely would have been enough to overwhelm Yomi, since he wasn't willing to go against Yusuke with Makuro backing him, as was why he even went along with the Tournament at all. Also, to your earlier point of no one reaching Upper S? Yusuke did. He found a new power that seemed to be a combination of Human and Demon Energy, and was able to nearly match Yomi in the end, this is despite the fact that Yusuke was losing the fight most of the time, he was able to nearly win with a single punch. There's a good chance that if we did get another arc, or if Yusuke was fully healed, he maintained that amp. He was read at about 200k using his Demon Power, but during just his fight with Yomi, he may have tripled or even quintupled that. Yusuke even says earlier on that he's closer to Shura's power than Yomi (I think implying that Shura was weaker or possibly stronger than Yusuke, but Yomi is on a whole other level), but by the end of their fight, Yusuke ends up knocking him out of the Tournament.
This was awesome man! I agree and would be totally for it. I forgot how much of the writing was written because togashi was sick. I grew up with this and it was my first big anime but the final arc wasn't bad, it just felt...off. Thanks for fixing it!
The tournament invitation was a good way to push Yusuke in siding with Mukuro whom he mets not long after. Assuming the end goal was Yusuke against Yomi.
I have always held out hope that he would pass the torch to his wife and jus bring back the series since she is a star in her own right i know it will never happen but I still praying it does I wanna see the gang get back together for one last ride
I doubt that Tbh, her wife might not be in bad health like Togashi, but shes sucessful and retired so i doubt she'll serialize weekly manga again. Best Case Scenario is the Live Action is popular enough that the companies think YYH is hot enough to cash in on a remake. As for manga, the only scenario i can think of is an Anniversary event one shot like the Minato manga, or one done by another mangaka who is a fan of Togashi like the Sui Ishida Hisoka one shot.
His "health issues" were exaggerated, just as they are today and he admitted to it. He honestly just wanted to relax and do things at his own pace in his own way. He was very upset the editors wouldn't allow him to include Kuwabara in the final arc as that's his favorite character. So honestly, it has everything to do with the lack of full control over his creation and he wanted it to be over.
@@munkiboiking675 Yeah that played a part of it I don’t think it’s Exaggerated cause he released something a few months ago he said that if he died the he already come up with a ending so I doubt that it wouldn’t make sense if he said that then said it was exaggerated plus the fans would of been caught up to it that if he’s really sick or exaggerated.
I don't mind the 3 Kings arc that much. Just kinda feels like not quite sticking the landing for an other all great series. But I love the ideas in your re-write. Really well done!
I don’t think them not being the strongest in there verse matters I think them not being the strongest leaves room for the imagination of what could be
anecdotally, toonami like never seemed to wanna air this arc and if it ever did air it, I was probably going through my homeless arc, but I digress. Essentially I was only ever able to watch like up to the end of Chapter Black over and over again, so I didn't get to watch the Three Kings Arc until I was like... idk fucking 25 cause I downloaded it after years of just having "never seen it" lol so on one hand I think just finally getting to watch it made me more partial to it than I objectively should have been. I really hate Togashi wasn't given time to take a hiatus and recover enough to have a fully fleshed out final arc. Great video.
One thing I didnt understand from Yuyu Hakusho is do all Demons really feed on Humans? I thought they didnt. Hiei, Toguro, Jin and others from the Dark Tournament didnt seem to feed on Humans. Raizen could've survived if he ate at all, not just feast on humans. It wasnt made clear.
Very well done video, thank you for this. I will have to do a revisit of the series. I watched this as a kid on adult swim at night. I think they later moved it to Toonami
Hey I know this is the three kings arc but I just wanted to mention I really wanted Suzaku of the Saint Beast to return and turn good and help Yusuke. I really liked his character design and I actually felt he would of made a great fit for Team Urameshi during the Dark Tournament. You could still have a Genkai there as a mentor for Yusuke so the plot doesn’t change at the end
Just wanted to say Hiei and Yukina are twins so they technically could share both parents. However Kina could've been born regardless. Togashi never really explained whether or not having a kid with a man would cause twins or if it just causes a bit to be born
It's honestly sad to know a fantastic final arc could have been there for yyh. But because of how hard the directors and such are to mangaka they gotta put in 200 percent work into their art and still can burn them out with more Do wish togashi just ended the story with sensui same with hxh in the chimera ant arc. The black whale arc should have been its own spin off manga instead so both can stand on their own merit
A all out war would have been way better than another tournament. That way the human side characters have a role to play. I would have loved to see Keko & Yusuke's mother unlock some type of spiritual powers. Yusuke's mother in specific was already shown to be a lil bit of a badass during the dark tournament. The biggest change i would make is not kiling off Raizen before we had to chance to see him fight. The training arc they had yusuke go on i would keep in but have Raizen train him instead. That way not only would he get exponentially stronger but he would also be able to perfectly control his demon side & learn some new techniques. I can go with my rewite but i dont feel like writing all that lmao 😂
Really fw your rewriting. Still hurts to this day that this could’ve been his best arc and really made yyh a greater masterpiece. Togashi himself is just wasted potential really 😭 but he still one of my goats
I am very interested in you making a full on rewrite of the Three Kings Arc, during into detail of each episode and how events would play out. In saying that as well, with Yusuke, Kurama and Hiei each training with the Kings, you should have Kuwabara train with the SDF and Emma. Maybe suggest that the new Spirit Detective needs to be far and above stronger than anything that can come out of the portal, and that someone powerful enough to cut through a barrier that can hold even S Classes back could be trained, and that his awakening to the Dimension Sword was merely the first step to his full potential, even explaining possibly that all the SDF members had their awakenings and were then trained to A Class, but that Kuwabara managed to get there without training, meaning that he could be the first SDF member to reach the S Class, possibly higher, due to his unique gift. You could even have Kuwabara and Yusuke fight before Yusuke fights Enma, have Kuwabara effectively brainwashed to be against the Demons (in the anime he was already mad that they all left to, in his eyes, fight more fights, rather than be with their new friends and family), you could even have some sort of point where Kuwabara hears about the attack on the Ice Kingdom, and goes to help Hiei protect it since it Yukina's home. Here, there could be some other fight with the SDF maybe, where Hiei is losing to the sheer numbers, and Kuwabara saves him and Yukina from the SDF before Hiei fights the main general guy one v one, and when Kuwabara makes a big deal out of saving Hiei for once, Hiei would directly express to Kuwabara that although he says he hates him, he always respected him, even going so far as to say that if he didn't have respect for Kuwabara, he would have killed him for touching or having a relationship with his sister, to which Kuwabara would FINALLY learn of their relation, as would she.
Honestly I always found the letter ranking system deeply flawed in the story. S class is supposed to be the highest echelon of power but there's a gigantic insurmountable gap between S class demons to the point where a low s class and a high s class Have an ocean of power between them to the point they don't even feel like they're the same class and an upper rest class could wipe out a lower S class with the same ease and A class can kill a C class To add to that the three kings have such a huge gap between them and everybody else that it's kind of silly they even have armies at all
I really wish he'd of continued or will continue the plot after the Three Kings. There is soo much potential there!!! Yusuke can live thousands of years and become demi god level from training his Mazoku energy and his newly awakened Sacred energy. Shura could be set up as the new threat and a powerful one at that. We could also see Kuwabara again fighting as a super intelligent Quest class fighter like Kurama was(this is how Kuwabara was actually supposed to be as Genkai noticed when she first met him)
It’s simple… Togashi has ADHD it’s evident in how every arc in Yu Yu Hakusho and even HxH is “structured” things just happen. The concept is fantastic the build up is phenomenal, the execution is just… ended because he got bored and wanted to move on to something else 🤷♂️
I still enjoyed the final arc. Sure it has its flaws. But I enjoy it despite its flaws. But man your rewrite would have been an absolute treat to read/watch.
Its not impossible but id really wish they do a redux of this chapter. Better yet I would love to see a new series of YYH and as well as a spin-off staring Sensui. My favourite character of all time.
I think the mistake of this arc honestly was going back to a tournament arc this should of been an all out war of different fractions introducing infamous new demons on each side famous around demon world with different techniques for example a demon named Knive he's famous assassin all who ever saw his face never live to tell the tail and he would work on heiei fraction but his last opponent would be Kurama if I'm getting my point across so we get that what if heiei and Kurama fought in a way
While I do feel like the final arc definitely was a push to end the series I think while Togashi was definitely saying I’m done. He did it in a way that reflected how an adolescent character like Yusuke transitions through Togashi who transitioned in writing the characters story. There’s a reason why it was done in such a way in my opinion. If you think about the whole power system thing such aspects of thinking never stopped Yusuke from wanting a good fight. That’s why I think the reasons power system classes were introduced so late was primarily to avoid putting labels onto opponents but also for the reason for a character like Yusuke to wrap his head around it. Then no sooner wiping his own ass with such an idea and discarding it just as quick. Thus that’s what Togashi by means of Yusuke wanted to express in making the tournament. Even though you have characters who have their own way of thinking there’s no reason those characters couldn’t be swayed by the natural appeal of another. Yusuke’s perspective opened a new way of thinking for the Demon Realm where instead of merely just being under rule people could go for the chance to change, grow, and learn something new about themselves or (in Yusuke’s spot that he realizes while fighting Yomi) regain a sense of self and not lose sight in hoping that there will always be someone stronger to push you and help you grow. In a way look at the Three Kings themselves and the characters that they recruited. At least two of the 3 Kings had followers or those that served them but Raizen he was the only King that had personal friends. It’s similar to Yusuke with the friends/allies he made with Hiei and Kurama both who are prime examples that kind of crossover onto the other Kings who recruit Hiei and Kurama. Kurama reflects a person who Yomi respected while for Mukuro Hiei reminds her of herself from all the struggles they both have endured. Both of these characters that these Kings recruited had ended up changing, strongly because of association with Yusuke. Raizen himself was altered through the meeting of a human woman who was just naturally enlightened. I think in forming those bonds in so short a timeframe was and is why Yomi and Mukuro accept the tournament aspect so easily. Changes were already forming within them and their mindsets. Now when it came to the randomness of Raizen friends I think the element they brought in how very minimal it was, was just the element of surprise. We naturally would expect our leads to be those that come out victorious but this was a tournament that reflected people fighting for themselves and just as much those embracing the enjoyment of fighting. So they showed that great power can come from the most unexpected places and also that demons aren’t all seeking outdated outlooks and have more in common with updated views of thinking. That’s why Enki winning the tournament in the end was very much a surprise as well as rewarding in a way. He even decreed his rule would only last 3 years to which they’d have another tournament for the chance for a new ruler with new ideals to come into the position. So yeah it may have seemed kind of like the power classes would reflect the stand point of who would win it didn’t stop the overall fact that the outcome could be surprising. Then we have old characters that got brought back only to be brought down very quickly. I really think they were more or less put there for fanfare but to also add substance more then anything. Now while power levels were introduced I think those were just to put a number on things for certain characters and the ones that were brought back for fanfare were the perfect choices to utilize them on. Also there was the fact that these characters returning reflected the bonds and influence that meeting, watching him fight, and just fighting Yusuke and getting the opportunity to fight him again effected these characters. Even though their secondary losses were predictable for viewers they still show the unbreakable connection formed from their knowing Yusuke. Now we get to the our lead Yusuke. This tournament by which he orchestrated was primarily because he knew he couldn’t run Raizens territory but he thought the idea of having a single ruler would be better. Though in his fight with Yomi he started to lose sight of why he was fighting analyzing all his past fights and wondering if he was just looking for someone to defeat him. He eventually snaps out of it because of Raizens voice and begins to gain renewed strength and even establish a new Sacred Energy. So even though he lost there was still something he gained. Everyone in more ways than one had something to gain. For Yusuke him truly realizing that he no longer fought to because his anger and instead fought to protect those he cherishes and loves was pretty much what he gained from this tournament. Now I loved how in the end we had an after period where some demons are just randomly put out to voice an opinion on how the whole tournament just was odd to them it kind of reflects the readers and viewers of the manga and anime since the anime is different in how it ends to the manga. But it clicks into how it made demons think and feel and how fans felt too. It had wasted potential to many but to me it’s potential shines in the fact that it’s so underrated for the way it was constructed that in reality it’s actually pretty amazing for how well it works in deviating from other Shonen tournament sources of the time (which more or less was just DB to really compare to then but still it deviated). There also was the opening for more to be done for a future demon world tournament but as Togashi was just trying to be done in terms of how it ended the way it was finalized was fine too because he still made Yusuke reflect that he’s not done yet in growing as a fighter, as a demon, or as a man. I also really loved in the old OVA it shows Yusuke and his friend entering the second Demon Tournament and though the fight separately they are still pushing toward the same goal of victory. Loved your retelling though it was dope. In the end there’s small semblance of potential in reviving Yu Yu Hakusho it’s honestly a series that doesn’t need revival though a remake would be epic if done under the right studio.
You forget that Raizens friends are Class S demons near or equal to the power of Yomi. Without them Yomi and Mokuro probably won't accept the tournament because if its an all out war the other 2 kings would lose.
Your rewrite definitely would go a long way to smoothing out the missteps of the finale being so rushed. I think the war scenario needed to happen for a bit longer, but have some betrayals and shifting alliances change how plays out. I agree having Yusuke fighting Enma would been a better battle as he acts as Konema's champion to put his friend on the throne. This gives Koenma a complete story arc of being the true succeesor to his father and disposing the disgraced king who became a tyrant, and shows why Yusuke was HIS spirit detective. (I'd made so Enma had done the spirit detective for centuries, his son only had done 3 times.) May be have a human who transcended into a celestial warrior as Enma last spirit detective as one of his fighters. I feel a rebellion against the corrupt status quo would worked much better as Yomi and Kurama makes so much more sense. I also agree the portal staying open should be permanent as it makes Sensui's plan rather low stakes that can be patched up so easily. Having Iomi poised to invade gives the actions Sensui made make good on his threat to a Yokai apocalypse. It being in Raizan's land then gives reason to why the world just not simply overrun immediately, as he forbids it. This makes it a perfect catalsyt for a coming war. I also agree they tossed around S status way too freely in the war of 3 kings. If you're going have some sort of top tier, then it's only special if a handful of individuals have it. If it was basically the 3 kings, and some ancient Yokai deep in the bowels of spirit world, then that's enough. They described S class as some Kaiju like beings, then completely copout that concept when we actually see the demon world. All in all, this ending just too rushed and lost so much potential. I don't hate the war of 3 kings, it just fumbled what could been an amazing finale. I get why the creator struggled with his health, and wanted to be done, but he ironically went against what Yuksuke was taught to lean on other people when you need help. You don't have to do it all yourself and you don't have to suffer. That what my friends taught me as I am far too willing bleed for a cause..any cause. He ignored his own message.
Thank's and i Agree. Im not sure if you read current HXH, but Togashi's writing has become super well thought out complex and has alot of political intrigue, so i would do anything to see him rewrite the Three King's arc in the modern day. Perhaps if he does ask for help with art and transitions to become just a writer, he could finish hxh and also write a new ending for a YYH remake/remaster, but thats a dream scenario.
Mazoku do need humans to survive. If they just needed it for power Raizen would not have died by not eating them. Also, imho there is nothing wrong with demons eating evil humans.
Heres an example, imagine if you had immortality fruit and you ate them every year and lived 1000 years, and then when you ran out you died. In that case the fruit was extending your life far past your natural lifespan, and when you stopped eating you died the way you shouldve in the first place. Thats how i view it.
@@The_Ciple That makes sense and also if the fruit also boosted their power level. Raizen in his prime had a power level of 20,000,000. However when the scanners showed him in the modern era it was even lower than Yomi and Makuro. I think it was like 780k. I wish they did not bring power levels into the story though ugh.
So everyone is saying that Togashi was overwhelmed with making a manga and that’s why chapter black and the three kings didn’t end properly. My only question is that if that was the case why did he go back to mangas writing and making HunterXHunter? Isn’t it the same thing of writing a weekly manga chapter?
Honestly, 3 Kings arc would be kind of boring considering it would be just training alllllllll day. I do think Raizen’s death was rushed HEAVILY, but overall, I don’t think it was bad.
Spoiler warnings for Jujutsu Kaisen That anti anticlimactic off screen of yusuke is where GeGe got the idea to have gojo get off paneled by sukuna in JJk lol
I still enjoy the final arc, Yusuke's crisis in wondering what the hell is he even fighting for anymore is pure *chef's kiss*
Edit: Enjoyed your rewrite too btw, well done.
Ngl the idea of Yusauke being lost and not even know what he’s fighting for was dope
But it really felt like that wasn’t the intended plot and was really just how Togashi was feeling at the time
That was filler. Yusuke vs Yomi was largely offscreen and that moment was never in the manga. Matter of fact, most of the anime content isn’t in the manga. The anime cooked with the filler like with SSJ2 Goku vs Kid Buu.
That was a good ending. Honestly wish it wasn't so rushed, there were so many interesting ideas that never got fleshed out
Yeah there's just so many characters that just show up to say hi and explain a little bit about themselves, and then just leave. I want to know more about the first spirit detective or Raizen's group of friends. Heck there's even more about Genkai's past that could be explored.
YOMI IS SO UNDERRATED! Easily my FAVORITE of the 3 Kings!
Never liked that dude, I liked raizen way more
15:53 well, Hiei's character is pretty consistently a warrior till the end, and a warrior's promise is one they keep till the end. we see this alot in the Dark Tournament, like when Bui wanted Hiei to kill him, since, if he couldn't beat Toguro, he no longer felt life was worth living.
BROOOOO YOUR REWRITE WAS SOO FYEEE 🔥🔥
I would pay for access to that being drawn/written out or animated 😭
Really really cathartic and entertaining ending to a wonderful dissection of one of the most iconic series of all time in any medium.
What character is that?

Awful taste

Huh?
I think this can not only keep kuwabara human, but also give him the excuse that "the demons are going rampant and are causing some shenanigans in the human world, so school is shut down until they go away!"
As for Kuwabara's training, his cases if he goes the spirit detective route.
Wow thats actually an awesome idea and probably a great looking design. I should've drew that up before i made the video.
@@The_Ciple Thank you.
Cold rewriting my man!!!, been waiting for someone to do this for years.
Very good rewriting for the ending.
I hope you find someone who can replicate Togashi art style to any degree and illustrate your rewrite because that was PERFECT
So much potential
The tournament invitation was a good way to push Yusuke in siding with Mukuro whom he mets not long after. Assuming the end goal was Yusuke against Yomi.
Normally I dislike rewrite videos on RUclips, but yours is pretty much spot on.
Only if togash wasn't sick at the time sad 😢
He was also really burnt out at the time and was probably wanting to rest and think about Hxh.
@@lazyscholar7932 yea
Cause at the end of the day if he wanna take a break he would just say so rather than making it seem like his health bad than it actually is.
Another great video!!!
To be fair he really wanted to end it and was losing his health from it as well as his motivation for the series
Still good imo, I’ll rate it 8/10
If Togashi explored it more it might even be better than Chapter Black & Dark Tournament 💯

I don't mind the 3 Kings arc that much. Just kinda feels like not quite sticking the landing for an other all great series. But I love the ideas in your re-write. Really well done!
Keep em coming bro, really enjoyed the rewrite
ICE DRAGON OF THE DARKNESS FLAME 🐲🥶
Very well done video, thank you for this. I will have to do a revisit of the series. I watched this as a kid on adult swim at night. I think they later moved it to Toonami
Awesome rewrite, thanks for the video!
I enjoyed these Yu Yu hakusho breakdown vids, I’ll stick around for the Hunter x Hunter vids !
But because of how hard the directors and such are to mangaka they gotta put in 200 percent work into their art and still can burn them out with more
Do wish togashi just ended the story with sensui same with hxh in the chimera ant arc.
Love the rewrite
Honestly I always found the letter ranking system deeply flawed in the story. S class is supposed to be the highest echelon of power but there's a gigantic insurmountable gap between S class demons to the point where a low s class and a high s class Have an ocean of power between them to the point they don't even feel like they're the same class and an upper rest class could wipe out a lower S class with the same ease and A class can kill a C class
To add to that the three kings have such a huge gap between them and everybody else that it's kind of silly they even have armies at all
I can't believe it never occurred to me that Kuwabara could fill the spirit detective role, that's a fucking great change!
3 kings was great. The only thing missing was Kuwabara.
YEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I really wish he'd of continued or will continue the plot after the Three Kings. There is soo much potential there!!! Yusuke can live thousands of years and become demi god level from training his Mazoku energy and his newly awakened Sacred energy. Shura could be set up as the new threat and a powerful one at that. We could also see Kuwabara again fighting as a super intelligent Quest class fighter like Kurama was(this is how Kuwabara was actually supposed to be as Genkai noticed when she first met him)
Do you plan on during videos on the YYH movies and OVAs? Oh, and how about the live action Netflix series?
Probably not, Im working on HXH rn and i haven't watched the other YYH stuff yet.
alright so it isn't just me thinking this but 11 months ago, rewatching this one.
I really liked that you covered all the manga arc by arc, don't stop the grind🔥
Wish this anime got 50 more episodes.
And new seasons like dragonball super
It would have nice to see each character get an ending to their character arc.
I think the mistake of this arc honestly was going back to a tournament arc this should of been an all out war of different fractions introducing infamous new demons on each side famous around demon world with different techniques for example a demon named Knive he's famous assassin all who ever saw his face never live to tell the tail and he would work on heiei fraction but his last opponent would be Kurama if I'm getting my point across so we get that what if heiei and Kurama fought in a way
I love this channel man🔥this anime needs to come back and we can make it happen💯
Perhaps if he does ask for help with art and transitions to become just a writer, he could finish hxh and also write a new ending for a YYH remake/remaster, but thats a dream scenario.
sometimes i think, by the end of the story...Kuwabara is the strongest human alive. Doesn't do anything or go anywhere, but its kinda neat.
The TK arc is my go to example for disappointing buildup.
I would’ve made Raizens friends important in some way and not off screen or just hint at how powerful they are.
So was Kuwabara Spirit Detective and that's it or would he defend Enma at first or what?
Yeah i forgot to include, he would switch sides alongside Koenma when they discover spirit worlds corruption.
"U can't end a good party without someone on the floor"
So everyone is saying that Togashi was overwhelmed with making a manga and that’s why chapter black and the three kings didn’t end properly. My only question is that if that was the case why did he go back to mangas writing and making HunterXHunter? Isn’t it the same thing of writing a weekly manga chapter?
Honestly, 3 Kings arc would be kind of boring considering it would be just training alllllllll day. I do think Raizen’s death was rushed HEAVILY, but overall, I don’t think it was bad.
I think the final arc is still really good but has lots of wasted potential
Spoiler warnings for Jujutsu Kaisen
That anti anticlimactic off screen of yusuke is where GeGe got the idea to have gojo get off paneled by sukuna in JJk lol
he shouldn't be a chosen one type character
Enma did nothing wrong
..King Enma did ONLY wrong lol. dude was the Klux Klan leader of the Yu Yu Hakusho universe.
bro you need to look at LEVEL E it's like he did drugs and made it IT MAKES ZERO SENSE
I love Level E honestly, I think it’s Togashi in his purest state, but that’s for another video.
@@The_Ciple okay good you are like of 2 other people that know of level E lmao the other being my buddy
Bro you definitely ripped this off a different RUclipsr 😂
