Sometimes, when I need to cry for life, I come and listen to this piece, that "night", its that bestiful moment of your life, and you beg it to do not leave you, Iit hits me vert hard sometimes...
There's a great book : The Book of Lieder: 1000 of the greatest chosen and translated by Richard Stokes : published 2005 : FABER AND FABER. London. The original text faces the translation. and there are biographical sketches of the composers and the poets. Superb.
I am willing to bet that when Dietrich Fischer- Dieskau and Gerald Moore finished recording this ALL the music gods let out a deep sigh of sheer delight! Bravo, this is mind numbingly beautiful!
Schubert, this lied, F-Diskow makes me humble and thankful and blessed to have been a high art musician all my life in spite of all the suffering and pain. Beauty is Truth is Beauty.
Me singing? :) Ah no, this is the great baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, one of of greatest singers of the German Lied. You can hear more of him on my channel. I'm glad you liked the video.
No matter how beautifully this song is sung there will ALWAYS be idiots who have to click the dislike button. I wish RUclips would get rid of it. If you don't like something just move on.
I was so entranced with this that I forgot my manners! Thank you so much FiDitanzer528 for introducing me to piece of music i have never heard before but will be listening to gain and again, it is stunning!
FiDiTanzer528. Your video is beautiful and is perfect with this lied, one of the most sublime of Schubert's lieder. The poetry is so sensitive and human, it makes me weep. Fischer-Dieskau's singing of course goes straight to the heart. In my opinion, he stands above all others in this interpretation and technique as he is accompanied deservedly so by the great Gerald Moore. Thank you for your effort, it's beautiful and you have made a lot of people happy.
Matthäus Kasimir von Collin (1779-1824) Night and dreams Holy night, you sink down; Dreams also float down As your moonlight fills the room, Fills the sleeping hearts of men. They listen with pleasure; Crying, when the day awakes: Return, fair night! Fair dreams, return!
See what this music has done to me? I MEANT to say...introducing me TO THIS piece of music that I have not heard before but will be listening to Again and again! Good grief i didn't know music could do this to ones grammar !
@milly1801 This version comes from the big DG Schubert collection. The booklet says this recording is from 1969. I'll have to listen again to the Salzburg recording you say is your favorite. If it's better than this, is must be something. :)
In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. Job 33:15-17 Ah, beautiful sleep, when ancient and modern man sips of eternity in an instant!
A singer with Dieskaus interpretive capabilities and Fritz wunderlich's voice would be the perfect singer of schubert. A well, this is definitely good enough.

This song perfectly describes the feeling of waking up from a really beautiful dream and just wanting to fall asleep and continue dreaming
Perfection and absolutely beautiful. I could listen to listen to this for the rest of my life. And I will do.
A big thank you for putting the English translation below the original German lyrics. It makes the appreciation of the music so much fuller.

I am willing to bet that when Dietrich Fischer- Dieskau and Gerald Moore finished recording this ALL the music gods let out a deep sigh of sheer delight! Bravo, this is mind numbingly beautiful!
I love this. The melodies are soothing yet sorrowful (at least in my opinion). This is really wonderful music.
Schubert, this lied, F-Diskow makes me humble and thankful and blessed to have been a high art musician all my life in spite of all the suffering and pain. Beauty is Truth is Beauty.
Schubert's lieder are absolutely amazing.
Perfection and beauty for the soul.
This comfortable feeling is universe, and off the charts
I can't thank you enough for posting this Lied. You made my day. An absolutely magical interpretation by the master.
One of Schubert's best...

gorgeous. thank you so much for posting. I love this song so much, and his interpretation is just wonderful.
Beautiful. Thank you so much for posting this, with lyrics in German and in English. Your effort is very much appreciated.
Fischer-Dieskau relishes words and music equally - as does Schubert. And let us not overlook the perfect accompaniment of Gerald Moore.
A very inward and sincere interpretation! I would be surprised if there is a better one of this song, regardless of voice (male or female)!
Nicholas Ennos subjective
This is a hidden gem, Schubert's genius at its peak.

There was one Franz Peter Schubert in the past, there's none since who could dare to stand near him as far as lieder are concerned. HE IS IMMORTAL!
we wrote an exam about this song at school and this is my favourite Schubert song now =) soo beautiful
one of my favourit songs and the most stunning interpretation!!!

Your video presentation of these superb performances is wunderbar!
Thanks for posting this. You are a real artist with your video presentation.
Amazing music, My parents let me hear this from the time I born
wonderful! as always from this great Maestro

Nacht und Träume (Schubert) arr. Cello & Piano
Oh my, thanks for the compliment.
Does anyone know how or where to find this piece without the vocals? Looked for it everywhere on youtube but nothing!!

Ah, beautiful sleep, when ancient and modern man sips of eternity in an instant!
waking up is hard to do
Original is in Bmajor, and you can get in widely enough in Ab too
Im Dorfe is also a great song about dreams.
This should be more popular than Ave Maria
A singer with Dieskaus interpretive capabilities and Fritz wunderlich's voice would be the perfect singer of schubert.
A well, this is definitely good enough.
Interestingly, a bit faster and louder than some other versions.
is this you singing? its magnificent!
The above bloke is wrong, it's in Ab.
where is your lover?Sleep, rest and dream your true lover! The true...a sweet kiss...for you.Fra
Aquí gracias a Santiago Levin
what key is this in? do you know?
Yep, this recording is in A-flat, and the original was in B.
Sounds like B major to me.
