Earthquakes are frightening, that's for sure. Back in the '80s, I remember us having a very small tremor in Indiana. It only lasted for a few seconds, but it was such a shock since it's Indiana, and we were not used to having earthquakes. The funny thing is, on the radio, there was a song playing by a group called The Whispers, and the song was called "Rock Steady" at the exact time it happened. 😂

I think that retrofitting your house could possibly protect it from sliding downhill, but I’m not sure if anything can be done (besides building walls) to protect a house or building from landsliding earth, debris, other buildings, etc.

      > Was I wrong?
      Quite.
      1. A relatively low-res camera is looking through rain at distant vehicles, and the result is probably MP4-compressed - some of their motion is probably lost.
      2. A lifted truck is likely to have springs with more give, and thus be more likely to bounce.
      3. Because the truck is lifted, any ground motion would be easier to observe with it tham with a shorter, lower car (think about how a longer pendulum has a lower frequency than a short one).
      4. Assuming this truck is near Ojai, it's more likely to see an initial 'jolt', as it's close enough to the epicentre that high frequencies haven't attenuated yet.
While healthy skepticism is a good thing, assuming something is faked because one doesn't understand it would be a grave mistake.

Hypothetically, it is possible that a very large storm could temporarily fill a dried lakebed in California and contribute to some small changes in earthquake probabilities in the region. However, there are a few important caveats:
For a dried lakebed to fill significantly, the storm would have to be very exceptional - likely a rare 100-year or 500-year type of event. Even major hurricanes don't typically bring enough sustained rainfall to completely refill huge dried lakebeds.
The filling would need to last long enough to have a meaningful impact on seismic stresses. Groundwater and lake levels often change gradually over many wet and dry seasons and years. A short-term spike would likely not make a huge difference.
Earthquakes are triggered by stress changes along faults at depth. Surface water loading alone would not directly trigger seismic activity. At most, it might alter stresses enough to slightly change the probability of an earthquake occurring.
The San Andreas and related faults are already under significant tectonic stress from the Pacific and North American plates. The timing of large quakes is governed by the buildup and release of strains in the crust over decades. Short-term hydrologic changes would likely have minor influence.
No credible seismologists have proposed that a single extreme storm could trigger a major earthquake. That seems highly unrealistic.
So in summary - it's not impossible some seismic probability changes could occur if a truly massive storm filled a dried lakebed. But the influence would likely be minor, short-lived, and not significantly trigger any earthquake that wasn't already building up strain for decades. The hypothetical proposed is highly exaggerated.

If rainfall is heavy enough that it begins to erode a fault, these faults could loosen, subsequently causing an earthquake

Dr. Lucy Jones is a seismologist. I never heard of a "seismotologist," but maybe there are. Do seismotologists go to beauty supply stores in Ojai, helping cosmetologists get their stores back in order after a quake? Does Caltech now offer degrees in seismotology? Is it something like astrology, seismology and cosmetology rolled into one? Caltech is always on the cutting edge of things.
