- Hi and welcome back. This is Part 2 in a series of videos specifically about the techniques and methods I use when creating hand dyed yarn. However before the dyeing process begins there are a few things to know which I call the BASICS. These Basics include what you need to know before you get started dyeing yarn and will be the foundation to build on as you learn how to create your own unique works of art with fibre. Part 2 section 1was about dye, now in section 2 we will talk about ACID.

I love that you explain the 'why' and function behind everything! Example, what does the level of acid do and why you might want to change the level of acid you're using. The best I've gotten out of other resources is "up to you how much you want to add." But never teaches what happens with different amounts even if its talked about at all.

This is so interesting. I really appreciate the examples of when to use low vs high acid concentration.
I notice you're wearing gloves, is citric acid hard on the hands?
I wear the gloves mainly to prevent my hands from being stained by the dye. However if the skin on your hands is cracked the citric acid will sting.
Hello & thank you for these wonderful tutorials. Question: How much vinegar would you put in 4 liters of water? I have only dyed with vinegar and find the dye just doesn’t set well. I was putting 2 parts water to 1 part vinegar...so maybe too much vinegar? Thank you!
The amount of acid whether vinegar or citric acid I use depends on the method of dyeing and result I'm going for. In general the higher the amount of acid the faster the dye will strike or be absorbed into the yarn. If using a lower amount the yarn will just take longer to absorb the dye. You can always add more acid if the dye isn't being absorbed the way you like and remember once all the dye is absorbed it still needs time with heat to set the dye. The brand of dye your using will tell you how long they recommend to heat set.
Hi Cheryl love your videos, keep them coming. my question is im not well equipped like you but how do you keep your basins water hot do i have to get a warmer the put my pan similar to yours on it? how long do you soak your skeins before you add the acid? an how long do i heat the pan before removing the skeins?
Yes you will need some kind of heat source. Your kitchen stove will work if you do not want to invest in anything else right now. My first video in the series explains how I prepare the yarn for dyeing, it's linked below. You can follow the suggestions of the dye manufacturer to know how long and want temp to heat the yarn after it's been dyed so that the colour sets properly.

Thanks for your really clear and easy to grasp explanations! I was wondering tho, what would you call a stronger concentration of CA: H2O? I know you said for 4L H2O you'd use 2/3 cup CA. Would a strong solution be double this amount of CA, or triple? Conversely - what would be a weak solution? Thanks in advance :-)
I always mix my citric acid the same. What I change is the amount of this mix that I add to what is being dyed. For example if I'm dyeing a solid colour with a high level of water in the pan I may add 1 cup of my acid mix to a pan with 6 skeins of yarn (watch my video on dyeing solid colours to find out why) I would consider this a low concentration of acid. Now in a pan with the same amount of yarn but a low level of water where it barely covers the yarn I might add 3 c of the acid mix for a high concentration of acid. I do this for colours where I want the dye to adhere to the yarn quickly like in speckling.
I was wondering if you only use the citric acid mix as the liquid in your pan, or do you add the mix to water in the pan? Thank you for any insights :)
