  • There are two main reasons I have when people come to visit me on my Narrowboat. How they use water and their expectations of electricity. If you are a visitor, being mindful of these small things will make a difference.....I know they would for me.

    Hi Chris, it was great to meet you the other day and have you over for tea on our boat. Thank you and your subscribers for the lovely comments about the boat, it’s a real pick me up when people are positive about something you feel so proud of. Sorry we had to cut the afternoon short, but if we missed our Blisworth tunnel booking we would have been stuck until March when the Stoke Bruerne locks reopened. Your help with the stove settings worked a treat and we’re getting the logs to burn properly at last. Keep up the good work on your vlogs, safe cruising and hopefully our paths will cross in the future. Mark & Neil, and the dogs Hugo & Bailey.

    Hello Mate, Just to say thanks for all your hard work. It is much appreciated. I have just finished watching all your vlogs from start to finish. (With a bit of jumping back to real time to mix it up a bit).
    I make that 118 episodes! Really loved the build series, but really I loved it all. Great unusual context, variety, witty Banter....Gift!
    Loving all the Narrowboaty type stuff too with all the shenanigans and Malachis along they way.

    Once again great vid, thanks , your ramblings are a treat.
    Hairy ears indeed, I got up the other day and , normally, I don't put my glases on at this stage, firstly I usually stoke the fire, bring the kettle with the heat that the overnight burning of the stove pop it on the gas hob, then to the hand basin in bathroom, teeth, back to the whistling kettle, make the tea then back to the bathroom, basin of water wash all that needs washing and of course, taking great care with the correct order of what gets washed when !!! Then bedroom, dress, with the aromas of brewing tea beckoning me from the galley.
    Well for some reason I put my glasses on before stoking the fire, and when I arrived at the bathroom with the light behind me , oh lord....... hairy ears. 😃 how long have they been like that!!!?........ have a great week. Colin

    Hi Chris we have been on our boat a couple of months more than you.We were at Red Hill when your boat was launched having some solar fitted . Love this weeks vlog and the thing that always makes me smile ,is if I use a land based toilet, the amount of water that is used to flush is about the same as a narrowboaters shower . Keep up the good work and hope to bump into you some day .

    Chris, very enjoyable video; it had a little bit of a number of topics. First, the viewers comments about your power sources should probably be taken with a pound of salt, because most of us don’t know what YOUR needs are and we also don’t know what the hell we’re talking about. The self defense bit was quite enjoyable. I was in your corner, Chris, although I knew you didn’t have much of a chance against a pro. I could go on, but you’ve got stuff to do other than reading a verbose comment. I wish you well during the coming week. Thank you for all the work you do to keep us educated.

    I live alone and had a massive water bill each year. So a meter was the way to go. It made me very aware and for the last 11 years I have showered as you do and being of the age where several visits to the loo during the night I do not flush until morning. I use liquid soap to cover my hands and then just rinse off so the tap does not go on until I am ready to rinse. My bill is now £13 per month, 11 years it was just Pennies short of £60 per month, goodness knows what it would be today.
    Love your vlogs, your sense of humour and your great look on life.

    Hi Chris I lived in a narrow boat for over sixty seven years and found that water was my main concern .
    Everything else was not a problem..I used to find that most people who have lived on a boat were very aware of the water situation for boaters.
    As for water catchment on a boat perhaps people don't realise that you have to balance the boat so any large vessel you use to contain water will alter the way the boat sits in the water.
    Anyway Chris I like your no nonsense videos they show people that not every thing that people watch about narrow boat life are not actual facts. For this alone you have to be commend... perhaps they will realise this before they commit to buying a narrow boat..as for myself I was born and bred on the canals.. having moved to a flat I some times think .
    That I made the wrong decision . with this... mainly because I have lost the sense of freedom that the canals gave me..
    Anyway Chris have a happy new year. Keep warm safe and well mate.

    • @chrismears-inslowtime
      @chrismears-inslowtime  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for the comment Wayne. I appreciate it. I agree with your thoughts of other channels, most of which show the positives of narrowboat life with a rose tinted outlook. It's fault, but that is the instagram feel with just a snap shot of reality. Sixty seven years is a life time of experience. You are a fountain of knowledge I'm sure and have seen many changes on the canal. If I get voted in for the CRT council, I'd very much like to draw on some of that to identify the changes in culture from this in charge. History is something that is forgotten and many of our leaders appear not to be interested in understanding history. San Tzu wrote a book on the Art of War 2.5 thousand years ago. It's still relevant today if people choose to read it. Thanks for the support Wayne and have a great week.

    Interesting and entertaining video, Chris. The interior of Mark and Neil’s wide-beam boat really is lovely in every way. It was very kind of them to let you film. Their boat is far nicer than that no-expense-spared wide beam that you filmed in the Fit Out Pontoon, and that was a nice boat. But they only just fit under the bridges!

Currently traveling in our 6.3 M by 2.05M Motorhome in Central Victoria Australia. Whilst we do stay in Caravan Parks those two items are very precious. Careful use is very important, Really it is commonsense however Land Lovers who have an endless supply of both However at very high prices do not understand being self sufficient in our Motorhome. Thanks Chris, another entertaining and informative vlog, thanks for sharing, 5⭐'s
    A bit late now I suppose, but did you ever consider installing a dishwasher? Like a genny, you don't need one, but what a luxury. Of course you wouldn't use it after every meal, but it would be more of a cupboard for dirty dishes until it was full, then whoosh - all the dishes done in one go.
    Contrary to common belief dishwashers use less water than washing by hand. The info in quotes below seem correct after doing some research on the interwebby thing.
    "A standard, energy-certified dishwasher will use around 11 litres of water per washing cycle. Older appliances can waste up to 37 litres per cycle, while those built after 2013 tend to use around 18 litres. Compare that to washing the same amount of dishes per hand in a sink which can waste up to 100 litres of water."

    • @chrismears-inslowtime
      @chrismears-inslowtime  8 месяцев назад +1

      I considered it but that would have an impact on the design of the galley which would have a knock on effect. I could have had one but I would have lost space for storage of food. I opted to wash up by hand. But it's not necessarily about water, it's also about electric power. I wonder just how often I would use it if it drained the battery a lot. Buy a genny! Yes, didn't think of that at the time. Thanks for the comment Gordon and have a great week.

      Good question Andy. I asked the Mastervolt fella when I asked him to discuss battery setup. The short answer is Yes but No. Yes I want the extra power for longevity without running the engine but No, because to charge the batteries, you will need to run the engine for twice as long if you use them properly. To top up at 50% use means running the engine for the same time as me running the battery to 10%. Might as well have the one battery. They will benefit in the summer months though.

    One of the more eclectic episodes so far. I couldn't help but think about the Monty Python skit about disarming attackers wielding pieces of fruit.
    Water is strangely a precious resource, even in a coastal rainforest climate. While it seems abundant enough, it is dependent on the amount of snow in the mountains. Climate change is making people more aware of water use. Though I am generally careful with water and use of electricity, my guess is that it would be quite an adjustment to live on a narrowboat. Another adjustment would be food shopping. As I can't manage meat, I have to eat a lot of veg., fruit, nuts, grains and seafood. Storing enough could be a challenge.

    • @chrismears-inslowtime
      @chrismears-inslowtime  8 месяцев назад

      I've just put my freezer on as I'm now in rural England. Fewer shops. I get the point of fruit and veg and they would go off if you don't use them but having a freezer is useful for frozen stuff. I think there will come a time when we will all need to adjust our living means. Thanks for the comment Peter. Have a great week.

    Great variety on this video - nice one. Loving the combat practice. I did officer safety training many moons ago which was similar, but no Hope now as it’s more than a while since I practiced! Good skills for you to maintain though if you can. Love that widebeam - beautifully put together, but much less cosy than a narrow boat and rather more ‘hotel like’ than most. Seemed huge too - good job they have so much battery power!
    Hairy ears…honestly, so funny! Yes I can imagine it’s difficult to spot living alone. Perhaps it’s useful for keeping your ears warm? 😂 How was the chicken you cooked? It looked really good - I might try doing that myself, if it tasted good?

    Nice Vlog Chris / you made me chuckle, just what I needed 😊
    Interesting seeing how much room there is in a wide beam / they look practically HUGE!!!! I know it’s still down to a practicality of best usage of what you have got but wow.
    As to water usage, I can see when washing to use the least amount makes so much sense, perhaps us “land lubbers” could take a few pointers there too in water conservation.
    I have an odd question though, do you “cold shower” and wash up as surely you “waste water” getting the heat through the pipes? That’s the biggest big bear for me in the house, how much you waste to get it to temperature. I guess you could always collect the water till it gets warm and use it for other things. Or feed it back into the water tank?
    Plenty of things to think about there Chris… love the self defence from someone coming at with you with a knife. But what if they attack with a fork 😂

    • @chrismears-inslowtime
      @chrismears-inslowtime  8 месяцев назад

      No to cold showers. I'd rather strip wash and I don't think winter is probably the best time to start either. Perhaps that's worth a vlog in the summer and slowly;y get used to it. The trouble with that plan.....filming it would be interesting!! I used to collect the water unused from the shower head but to be honest, the shower doesn't use as much as I thought. Strange but....it takes a while and constant viewing of the water and electric gauges to work out the most efficient use of water and power.
      Knife and forks are dangerous in the wrong hands! Seen it in the movies. Thanks for the comment Jon. have a great week.

    Hi Chris great video was always , really useful tip on showering as iv just moved aboard my boat she's a former hire boat with a 1000 litre water tank so water conservation isn't my biggest concern but I still practice conserving water my biggest problem at the moment is I need to sort solar out in the summer so I'm thinking of splashing out on a new eco flow stackable battery storage system and solar panels and their new aircon unit , the bit I find most irritating is how much gas I use as I love cooking so my main expenditure so far will be gas bottles

      That's interesting Nathan. My gas bottles last about 4-5 months. I drink lots of tea and do cook....poorly but do use the gas. Interesting concept of the eco-flo batteries. Good luck. Thanks for the comment and have a great week.

    When sailing long distance, salt water was always used for washing-up, toilet flush etc. I’m wondering if there is a “mini” filtration system that would allow canal water to be so used? And/or you could have a separate kettle and boil it before use.

    • @chrismears-inslowtime
      @chrismears-inslowtime  8 месяцев назад +1

      There are filtration systems and if I need to get one, I'll look at it. For now, I'm content to just whinge as I could still use my water better and until I use it perfectly, I'll just have to get used to whinging. Rinsing the plates and pans outside is an improvement though. Thanks for the comment Terry. Have a great week.

    I'd have remembered the dogs names before the guys personally 😂😂
    Chicken looked nice, are you concerned about knife attacks on the cut or was it more a content filler? (Or both)

    • @chrismears-inslowtime
      @chrismears-inslowtime  8 месяцев назад +1

      Content filler is the answer but it doesn't hurt to have a little knowledge. I've resolved a few issues since I've been on the canal and all have been with teenagers who are the most likely carriers. To be honest the boating community are not the issue. Thanks for the comment and have a great week.

    Paper plates? When a friend visits us from the USA he runs the shower for 20mins to warm it up.... not invited to the boat!

      Paper plates. What a great idea. Never considered it. Great for visitors....perhaps it depends on the visitor. Don't blame you for the visitor from abroad. Thanks for the comment David and have a great week.

    Good talk. You never know how you will respond if attacked. But having some practice of how to escape and run could mean you don't freeze. Just after getting married my husband got attacked through the window of our car. (We'd just parked) I still don't know how but I was out off the car round the side and let fly with a kick to the man's goolies. He lost interesting and I was back in the car and we were off. Husband had a few buises and broken glasses. Could I do it again..I don't know. Older now.

      It's a very difficult position to be in. Flight or fight from the reptilian brain but the heart does start to beat profoundly and I'd rather not get involved and try to reduce conflict always mindful that the situation may change and how to assess the right time to do something if it's going that way. As you say, older now. Have a good week.

    Morning Chris hope your well buddy, You make a good point regarding telling your guests how to use the facilities in your home but it is difficult to remember the rules when they normally don't apply back in their world, I don't think I would even bother trying to explain the rules to the grandkids when they pop round because they wouldn't really get the point, So being the the gracious host you are will just have to moan about it to yourself once they have gone home 🤬😃 .....as always take care and all the best mate - Paul 👍

    Yeah the cassette toilet can be problematical, I moored up at a festival once and people kept sneaking on my boat to use the loo, when I returned it was overflowing and all over the floor, thank god I had a friendly nurse to hand who helped me mop up, but they do fill quickly with wee especially when there is beer to hand. Wee in a bottle and discard. Water is always and issue. One can resort to the submariners bathing style and that is a main parts body wash in the sink at a pinch when out and about, will not go into the intricacies but I am sure you can work it out 🤣😂 Yeah an iPad uses so much less electricity than a large flatscreen TV, I have both as well as a computer and hardly ever use the big TV anymore and saves so much power.

    • @chrismears-inslowtime
      @chrismears-inslowtime  8 месяцев назад +1

      That must have been horrendous to clean up. Moreover, why did people continue to use the toilet without telling you! Ship showers are the way I've showered since I've been on the boat unless I'm at a water point where I'll use the shower a bit more liberally. Thanks for the comment and support. Have a great week.
