Hope you will keep filming well beyond this tragedy. Love your farm! I saw you have a problem with your drains beeing clogged by snails. You coul use a pice of net used for your fry hotels, role it in a cigar shaoe and stick it into the drain. It will stop snails blocking the drains.
@Boldor Mihai - Check out our Day 10 video. Your solution for our blocked drains was mentioned in the video. Unfortunately, you weren't mentioned by name, but I gave you credit in the description. We plan to show your idea implemented in a future video, and I'll make sure Charles mentions your channel in the video. Carl
Glad I found your channel. I'm sorry you're going through such a major set back again so soon after the hurricane. But know that your perseverance is inspiring. I think your dogs might have had their fill of cichlids by now though. Or is that even possible? ;)
Thank you. We used to raise a lot of rainbowfish before some earlier disasters (Hurricane Claudette and chilodenella) and are considering starting them up again. Charles
@@goliadfarms7029 Yeah I've seen some of your vids before during auto plays, but as it's a background noise thing I've never subscribed. But now it's time I got behind you and showed you some support. I just wish that I was in a better position to do more for you.
Could you guys pull some of the OB and other hybrid cichlids out of the sump to restart a few colonies? I know they won't be linebred for the specific colours you had developed but at least get new strains started? Would make for a very interesting video if you show the selection process and stocking of the vats. All the best!
The fish in the sump also took a big hit, but we will be pulling out what fish we can. That doesn't help on species where you never use fish you aren't entirely sure of, but for the aquarium and hybrid strains it can work. That's a good idea for a video and we'll consider doing it after we get through inventorying breeders in vats. Charles
I'm a noob, but have you ever tried carbon dosing (sugar or molasses) to immediately lower the ammonia levels? Since the high levels are only temporary. The nitrates would remain in your system for your plants.
We have large recirculating systems (75,000 gallons of water) with plant filtration. Once the temperatures rose, we finally got sunlight, and we removed over a ton of dead fish, the plant filtration kicked in and ammonia has dropped sharply toward zero. Charles
💯💪 I'm trying to read all the comments and leave a little something for the algorithm!! What a beautiful place and a channel I look forward to seeing so much more from!!!
Most of my filters are sponge filters made from pvc and sponges from the dollar tree a few are fountain pumps with sponges cut to fit. Lights are plastic gutters with led under cabinet lights from Walmart others are old fixtures with led bulbs I have 5 tanks I built out of old glass. Still using my old metaframe 10 gallon stainless steel most of my stands I built as well thanks for asking
*I'm new here so this might be WAY out of character* but I keep expecting a bit of anger to come out.. I know I'd occasionally walk off to kick a tree or yell at the sky.. This is a real lesson for me on how to handle hardship -thank you for sharing.
We've experienced a number of disasters over the three decades so I have some experience at kicking trees (which can hurt). I go through a quick burst of anger at the Universe and then hunker down to soldier on. I call it persistence, Susie (wife and business manager) calls it stubborness. Charles
Just a though (and from observations I've made and recorded in journals and logs): Fish that reproduce in numbers and in short time also die back relatively quickly (think most poecilia, multifasciatus, convicts, etc). That could be a reason why convicts are not too hardy.
I seen a Convict in one of the videos of surviving fish in the last couple days at the back and in a walk way I think. I think there were OB Zebras in with it .
You should breed Convict Cichlids with Parrot Fish to create Jailbird Cichlids. I've been thinking of this hybrid for years and no matter how hard I try to popularize the name I don't have the followers to do it.
Cory's tour of your farm introduced me to your amazing work. After seeing a vid of what happened the other day i was deeply saddened to see how badly you were effected by it. I will drop a few Euros on your gofund me page on tuesday. Hopefully it helps. Greetings from Dublin, Ireland
Thank you. Please continue to watch as we recover. We are doing a video today recapping our progress and showing some underwater footage of surviving sump (feral) fish. Charles
Had this happen to me once, but I only had a 400l tank, but it's still not fun at all.. Only way i knew some were still alive were that one of the plecos blinked at me and after that it was a rush to slowly heat the water and get power back, it had been off for a week while I was on vacation. Only lost 2 fish out of the 20 or something I had in there.

The floor gutters are flat. As water flows out of the vats, the water level rises past the lip into the sump. So, as long as water flows into and out of the vats, water flows over the lip into the sump. We'll try to post a video describing this. Charles
Thank you. Today we had some better news about breeding stock. One of our Aulonocara species had losses but the breeding colony mostly survived. For three other fish we lost the breeders, but have surviving backup breeders. Charles
Thank you. We have an Oregon nephew who had trouble in high school. He was sent down here. After a summer of Texas heat and working in our greenhouses, he returned to school. Charles
They did hide well, and we have lots of them in both Greenhouse1 and 2 floor gutters and sumps. They are great parents and manage to reproduce despite all the other fish. I've since trapped a pair of Pink Convicts and have a big batch of fry from them. Charles
Thank you for watching our videos. We are returning to normal and should be back up to full production next year. We did lose a few species/varieties of fish but are acquiring breeding stock from our customers. Charles

I've watched every bit of footage of your greenhouses I can find one of these days I'd like to mimic your setup. Cant wait to see you up and running strong again.
Thank you. We will video document our rebuild of Greenhouse 3 this summer.
Charles
Glad to see you guys pushing forward! All the best! ♥️
Thank you. Susie (wife and business manager) says it's not possible for me to quit. She calls it stubborness, I call it persistence.
Charles
I’d love to learn more about your sump system and what you use the sump for since there is no filtration. Your set up is fascinating!
Thank you. We will do a video documenting the entire system including plant filtration.
Charles
Keep trucking man. You will build it up again.
Thank you. We are on the road to recovery.
Charles
Glad to see you guys getting there... I did see Cory original video on you....keep going through it......
Thank you. We are continuing. Cory and Aquarium Co-Op have been great.
Charles
The Co-Op sent me. :D
Wishing you all the best.
Thanks for coming. We're big fans of Aquarium Co-op
💯
Watching from wales 🏴 good luck with the clean up thoughts with you
Thank you. We are mostly finished with clean up, although I found a large, dead, rotted Hypostomus plecostomus in a vat today (that's in today's long video to be posted soon).
Charles
Hope you will keep filming well beyond this tragedy. Love your farm! I saw you have a problem with your drains beeing clogged by snails. You coul use a pice of net used for your fry hotels, role it in a cigar shaoe and stick it into the drain. It will stop snails blocking the drains.
Thank you. That is a great suggestion and we will implement it!
Charles
Me too I'm looking forward to seeing more!!!
Or is that even possible? ;)
Thank you. We are recovering.
The dogs seem to have an insatiable appetite for well-aged, expensive sushi.

Hi Belinda from Australia enjoying your show
Thank you. We hope to continue to provide videos for your enjoyment.

@@goliadfarms7029 I am really glad to hear that and love that you got ur own channel now.
Appreciate the explanation of the mulm. :)

Yeah I've seen some of your vids before during auto plays, but as it's a background noise thing I've never subscribed.
But now it's time I got behind you and showed you some support. I just wish that I was in a better position to do more for you.
So so sorry to hear about all you are going through. ❤❤
Thank you. We will recover.

Charles
Keep strong!
We will! Thank you.
Charles
Keep it up. I came from Cory too. Best of luck.
💯💪 I'm trying to read all the comments and leave a little something for the algorithm!! What a beautiful place and a channel I look forward to seeing so much more from!!!
Thank you. Cory and @aquariumcoop have been great.
Charles
Sorry this happened been keeping fish long time about 45 years make my own lights and filters gave you a subscription
Thank you.
I would like to hear about your lights and filters.
Charles

Wow, that's really kind to say. Charles' stoicism and optimism is inspiring, and has been grounding for the rest of us though this ordeal.
Carl
We've experienced a number of disasters over the three decades so I have some experience at kicking trees (which can hurt). I go through a quick burst of anger at the Universe and then hunker down to soldier on. I call it persistence, Susie (wife and business manager) calls it stubborness.
Charles
Hang in there Charles. :(
Thank you. We will.
Charles
Just a though (and from observations I've made and recorded in journals and logs): Fish that reproduce in numbers and in short time also die back relatively quickly (think most poecilia, multifasciatus, convicts, etc). That could be a reason why convicts are not too hardy.
Logical. Why not?
Seems like a reasonable hypothesis. So far, early in our inventory of breeders, we're finding Peacocks are faring better Mbunas.
Charles
Mridul your knowledge is beyond words my friend ❤️🙏🙏🤗
@@MrsBJPalmer ❤️🤗
@@marypaigeflynn4512 Thanks Mary! I only speak of my observations and experience
Plastics become more brittle as the temperature goes down. Might help explain some of the plastic splitting.
True. I was surprised that the vats would crack at such relatively minor temperature differences.
Charles
When you open your store back up I want to buy cherry shrimp from you. ❤
Our Cherry Shrimp did well and we will be offering them soon.
Charles
@@goliadfarms7029 that's great! I breed them in Arkansas and I worry about them surviving the cold. I guess yours have that gene.
Oh these Cherry shrimp are amazing 🦐🦐🦐❤️❤️
I seen a Convict in one of the videos of surviving fish in the last couple days at the back and in a walk way I think. I think there were OB Zebras in with it .
I haven't seen a Convict, but really hope some made it. The Peacock cichlids seem to fared better than mbunas and New World cichlids.
Charles
You should breed Convict Cichlids with Parrot Fish to create Jailbird Cichlids. I've been thinking of this hybrid for years and no matter how hard I try to popularize the name I don't have the followers to do it.
Interesting name. We do have Texas Convicts, Convict Cichlid X Texas Cichlid.
Charles
Here by Cory's recommendation!
Thank you. Cory and Aquarium Co-Op have been huge help for us.
Charles
It's disheartening to lose fish. We are looking at how to harden our systems since we fear such storms and outages might become more common.
Charles
Uk pointed to the channel from aquarium co op seen the original vid too
❤️
Cory and @aquariumcoop have been great. Cory says doing the @ thing might allow them to see our appreciation of them. We'll see.

Wow my heart breaks for you! Is there a way we can help support your rebuild?
Of course a Like and Subscribe always helps.

Thanks to Cory's video of his visit is his I found you guys hope for the best
Thank you Cory and Aquarium Co-Op have been a great help.
Charles
Are the "gutters" slanted down to the sump, how does overflow water make it to the sump?
The floor gutters are flat. As water flows out of the vats, the water level rises past the lip into the sump. So, as long as water flows into and out of the vats, water flows over the lip into the sump. We'll try to post a video describing this.
Charles
Goliad Farms sorry about the loss of your breeding fish
Thank you. Today we had some better news about breeding stock. One of our Aulonocara species had losses but the breeding colony mostly survived. For three other fish we lost the breeders, but have surviving backup breeders.
Charles
Wish I could help. Would love to lend a hand, but Im in Oregon
Thank you. We have an Oregon nephew who had trouble in high school. He was sent down here. After a summer of Texas heat and working in our greenhouses, he returned to school.

Thank you.

Convict's are really good at hiding
They did hide well, and we have lots of them in both Greenhouse1 and 2 floor gutters and sumps. They are great parents and manage to reproduce despite all the other fish. I've since trapped a pair of Pink Convicts and have a big batch of fry from them.
Charles
Love this channel, hope everything go back to normal soon, best luck.

I know some people up here that own a lot of convicts and other fish of breeding stock size your out of due to the massacre.

I am hoping that my small amount of participation by subcribing, watching, liking and commenting will help with some revenue from RUclips. I will be watching to see if there is any other ways to help as I understand it can take a long time for FEMA funds to come through so you can rebuild lost stock. Your operation completely impressed me when Cory came through and filmed his episode. I love how you use nature as a full partner in your operation.
