Experimental Skyblue Molly
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.День назад
Charles is working on a Skyblue Molly, which at this time is mostly in his imagination. While showing his early progression in this direction, he briefly discusses the benefits of inbreeding.
Particolor OB Peacock
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.14 дней назад
Charles selects breeders and discusses what he looks for in this fish. On one male, he is outvoted by what he refers to as "people with extra X-chromosomes" (Susie and Kate). He is less than gracious about the loss. After selecting breeders, Charles discusses variables that impact production of juveniles in Peacocks.
Raccoons
Просмотров 84414 дней назад
Raccoons love the greenhouses, but they can cause lots of damage. Charles shows how we trap and relocate them when they get too pesky.
Protomelas taeniolatus 'Sunset'
Просмотров 88114 дней назад
This strain of Protomelas taeniolatus is pure but is a color variety created by selection by Charles for more gold and orange in the body. He originally called it Sunshine but decided the colors were more of a good Texas sunset. Charles discusses breeder selection, then expounds on the definition of species and problems with it.
German Red Peacock
Просмотров 1 тыс.21 день назад
This is a long-time aquarium strain African cichlid originally from Lake Malawi. This fish showed up in fish stores in the mid-1970s. It's obviously an Aulonocara species, but its exact lineage isn't known. Charles discusses selecting both male and female breeders for strain improvement.
Gold Freckle Sailfin Molly
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.28 дней назад
Charles discusses breeder selection as we rebuild our Sailfin Molly stocks after the Texas Winter Storm followed by the hottest summer we've had. Both events decimated our Sailfin Mollies.
Aulonocara kandeense 'Blue Orchid'
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.Месяц назад
Charles discusses our breeder male and female Aulonocara kandeense 'Blue Orchid' cichlid with a long digression on scientific name pronunciation. He also discusses polyculturing Blushing Swordtails with this cichlid while selecting for large swordtail size. He finishes the video showing how we breed African mouthbrooding cichlids in a 300-gallon breeding vat.
Protomelas fenestratus ;Tiger'
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.Месяц назад
Charles selects breeders for this Lake Malawi cichlid. He also discusses a color mutation of this species, leucistic which in this fish prevents placement of black pigment except in the eye.
Skyblue Red OB
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.Месяц назад
Charles discusses what he looks for in breeders for our Skyblue Red OB Peacock strain. After the portion of the video in the greenhouse, Charles does a whiteboard presentation on the genetics of blue, skyblue, red, yellow/gold, and OB in this strain.
Texas Convict Cichlid
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.Месяц назад
Charles describes an interesting intergeneric hybrid of Archocentrus nigrofasciatus (Convict Cichlid) and Herichthys cyanoguttatum (Texas Cichlid).
Toilet Snake
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.2 месяца назад
This Texas Rat Snake took up residence in our office toilet for about three weeks. He was impossible to catch since he had a ready refuge. He finally decided to come out and was released into the wild.
Blue OB Peacocks, Red Swordtails, and Bullfrog Tadpoles
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.2 месяца назад
Charles selects Blue OB Peacock breeders. He also discusses successfully polyculturing large Red Swordtails with the Peacocks. Charles shows off the surprise Bullfrog tadpoles we found in the Peacock breeding colony.

SUMP FISH!!! ••• Underwater look at the feral fish in our system
This brought me back to my high school classes! I really remember the genetics classes and I always think that if my teacher knew about fishes it would be really valuable to explain this to the kids on that time! Great video as always Charlie. Oh, also, Susie just wants to get you at your best side in the camera 😂 just kidding. Great work for you both!
Your music makes it absolutely impossible to hear what you are saying. Turn it up a bit!
I had to go back to that video from three years ago. I don't know what the music was, but that was only in the introduction. There was no music in the actual video which followed the short intro. Charles
Those test breedings would be interesting for sure. My hunch is that through line breeding for polygenic "Red", you have changed the ways in which Gold and OB are being expressed. Pretty cool.
I suspect you are correct. It's difficult to isolate polygenic characteristics without impacting other characteristics that might be relying on the same genes. Charles
I love the genetics, seeing the fish and then explaining how you get the colors is amazing!
Genetics is such a powerful tool. I plan to do periodic whiteboard genetics explanations to fill in blanks when I speak about genetics while processing fish. Charles
Susie is wise!
She is very practical, which makes it difficult for someone like me. But it works out. I raise fish, she makes sure the business works. Charles
very pretty
Thank you. It will get prettier as each generation passes. Charles
👍🏽
Thank you for watching our video. Charles
Very interesting!! Hope the line comes through as planned. 👍🏻🎃
It is an interesting strain, and I hope to quickly restore it to what it was before the Texas Winter Storm. Charles
2:25 What about her mustache?
Oh no! Now to answer that question, I'll have to watch the video, something I try not to do. Do you have a timestamp so I can go straight to it? Charles
@goliadfarms7029 🎬🎥 〰️no stach emoji 🫢
@@goliadfarms7029 I'm not sure what you call it as I don't want to say lip or lips (I don't know a lot about cichlids). What do you call it when they have a darker cap on their heads? Also, just click on the blue 2:25 and it will take you to that point in the video. Thanks. 🐠
@@chia_pet7121 Lips work. I looked at her. She is expressing the OB pattern which causes black patches at random locations. I n her case it appears on her upper lip, Charles
Nahhhh. With respect, her concerns about looking at the camera are meaningless to me. I never even thought about it. I actually get annoyed with Animal YT camera work that focus more on the speaker instead of the animals. You're doing it perfect 👌
Thanks for another great video! I don't know if you'll know which fish I mean, but when you started your discussion of genetics, you had a nice male OB in the little display tank, with some smaller fish that was recessive for non-gold. You're putting him in BRU for Red OB Dragonbloods. About the 5 minute mark in the video. Could he also be considered parti-colored? At this point, I'm having a little trouble identifying some of the varieties, and I'm pretty confused about the parti's. Thanks.
I remember that fish. He could also have been placed with the Particolor OBs, but he didn't have all the requisite colors. What I'm going for in Particolors is a mix of gold/yellow, blue, and red with OB. I prefer the gray bodied fish over gold bodied fish. Charles
I have a mixed variety of Mbuna. I have an ob female that had a large batch of fry that were almost 1/2 orange like red zebra and the other half ob gold with some having blue hues throughout. I thought it was 2 different males that spawned with her. I have one male that is blue similiar to some type of pseudotropheus with the others being orange. Which is more likely, recessive genes or 2 males spawning?
You can get some very unexpected results with Lake Malawi hybrids. Interestingly enough, DNA studies indicate that most of the speciation in Lake Malawi was caused by hybridization. Charles
Excellent camera work, especially the close-ups of Charles handling the fish. I get a very different result when I put my hand in an aquarium, so the 'fish-whisperer' hands at work are fascinating to watch. As always, big thanks!
I'll let Susie know you like her camera work. Charles
Слухати вас дуже цікаво, дякую!
Thank you and thank you for watching our videos. Charles
You don't need to force yourself to look into the camera, we love you the way you are!!!! (don't listen to the nitpickers)
Thank you. Unfortunately, Susie (wife, business manager, videographer, etc.) is the nitpicker! Charles

Thank you for watching. Charles
Another amazing video! Those are very pretty fish.
Thank you. I hope to intensify the red in following generations. Charles
My German Red is a bit unique and the head is blue but his entire body is two tone red with verticals stripes. No blue in the body at all and the red is deep red. He is about 6 inches now.
So, it sort of looks like the pictured fish but with no blue on the body. I'm working on Blue-Faced Red Peacock. It sounds like he is what I'm after in that strain. Charles
Beautiful. I need one of those males.
We have some nice youngsters coming up. Charles
Love you videos😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you. Charles
Hope you hit that True Blue mark...! 🐟🐬🐋
I'm going to give it a couple of generations to make progress. Charles
Дуже цікаві гибриди, дякую, що радуюте нас результатами своєї роботи. Бачив на фото (не вживу) що у Liberty molly дуже інтенсивний блакитний окрас тіла. Чи доцільно б було використати цей вид для виведення Skyblue Molly?
That's a good suggestion. We raise Poecilia mexicana, Campeche, which does have some nice blue. I will probably set up a cross with that species. Charles
@@goliadfarms7029 З нетерпінням буду чекати результатів цього проекту! Дякую за відповідь, Charles.
@@matthelm6128 I'm eager to see if there is any progress toward a Skyblue Molly, so I also look forward to the results. Charles
Hey Charles, do you have a book or any source about the genetics on mollies? Thanks alot!
My best recommendation is the American Livebearers Association library. I think they have some of Dr. Joanne Norton's articles on molly genetics. Someone should do a molly genetics book. Charles
RUclips is acting up on my end, not sure if it’s blocking me or if my thumbs are the problem 😂
I have no idea how and or why you are being blocked. We are not doing the blocking. I'd like to see your comments. Please email them to me at charles@goliadfarms.com. I can then repost them. Charles
Yes sir nice little Selectively breed line of fish 🐟 that's cool 👍🏻
We'll check on the progress on this line in mid-November. and I'll report on the progress or lack thereof then. Charles
Nice fish Charles.💦🩵
Thank you. That's high praise from someone who produces some exceptional fish. Charles
My old platinum sailfin lyretail male had a very iridescent blue all through him. I'd say your on the right track, also I didn't see it on him till he way about 1 or 1.5 years old. It may have been possible to see since he was platinum.. Memory fades though, it may have been closer to a turquoise but I recall it as blue... The sailfins are all green in the wild right?? (ish)
We'll be processing this fish again in mid-November to see if we are making progress. There are three sailfin species. The males tend to have gold breasts and turquoise caudals on greenish bodies. Charels
@@goliadfarms7029 Ah, it would have been turquoise then. He was a real looker. Im excited for November then!
@@MrTurboTurkey I was making progress on a turquoise molly before the Texas Winter Storm but lost the breeders in the Storm. Charles
Good luck to you Charles on the new line! As beautiful as the larger fish are, I'm always excited to see the smaller ones since that is all the space I have. That said I still go back and watch those sump videos every once in while.
I'll post and update on this fish in mid-November. We will do more sump videos as soon as Carl and Susie get together on this. Charles
🤞🤞
Thank you for watching. Look for an update on this fish in mid=November. Charles
🐟🐟🐟🐟 I’d love to see those colored up!
We'll be processing this fish again in mid-November. I'll report on any progress. Charles
OOHHHH . I like em ! Sky blue would be cool ! 🔵🔷🟦
I agree! I want a skyblue molly. I'll keep you posted on the progress of this project. We will be processing the breeding colony in mid-November. Charles
Slightly of topic but as you recirculate your water do you ever have any disease issues? Ie bloat. Some other big breeders use the drip method and all water goes to waste
We've only had one disease issue. A year or so after we moved our hatchery from Santa Fe, NM to our farm in south Texas, we had an outbreak of Chilodonella, which doesn't seem to bother most fish, but was deadly for our rainbowfishes. Once we got the culprit identified, we successfully treated the system. We are very careful with quarantine and also do quarterly preventative treatments. So, after almost 25 years here, we've only had one outbreak to deal with. I think the fact we have robust ecologies (lots of Paramecium, freshwater sponges, etc.) keeps any disease organisms under control. Charles
@@goliadfarms7029 You have freshwater sponges? The live ones or just seeded sponges? I am hoping the actual living organism(what species), would love for you to show them off, or maybe wondering if I could buy one or two from you.
@@Gingerfrost We use Matt Hill at ecoanalysts.com for identification of invertebrates. He says it is the freshwater sponge Dosilia radiospiculata. I will include them in a video soon. Email me at charles@goliadfarms.com and maybe we can work something out to get you some. Charles
"True Goliad Blues"
Goliad Blues. I like that. The local high school (where two of our grandkids go) colors are blue and white. Charles
Awesome project!
Thank you. I'll post progress if any is made. Charles
How long does it take OB Peacocks to color up?
Our Peacocks grow rapidly, but the males don't color up until starting around four months and aren't fully colored until 5-6 months. Charles
They're absolutely gorgeous!!! 👍🏻
Thank you. I think it is pretty. Charles
Dont undercut the market tooo much with the shizer agua. Stack those racks and don't make enemies. If the market absorbs the high price go for it. Maybe 20% reduction.
Sounds like good advice. Charles
Would love some greenhouse tours again. Would love the sumps tour again. I know its business as usual for you but I appreciate the plants and animals and just seeing how it Alll progresses.
We are filming a walk-through of Greenhouse 1 this morning. I don't know when it'll post. Charles
This is a beautiful OB! 😍 I like the name too...fits perfectly.
I picked the name Particolor for some reason. I'm sure it was a good reason at the time. Charles
The ladies are quite opinionated today. Ha ha. Stand tall Charles. These fish are amazing.
They are always opinionated! I have to let them win occasionally. They are nice fish. Charles
O bs are the best😊
I like them because they are so variable, offering plenty of opportunities to create new strains. Charles
Pains me to admit... I agree with the ladies.
me too, their male looks much more like what you want.
At the end, I had to agree too. That fish, while very nice, wasn't a good Particolor OB. Charles
There's something about OB Peacocks that I really love. And these particolors are so unique. And the females are more attractive than many other varieties.
I try to select for some color in the OB females. When we do the Gold OB and Orange OB breeders, I'll show you some females that are often more colorful than their male counterparts. Charles
Great lookin ob peas😊
Thank you. I like them. Charles
I especially appreciate the explanation about your target number of fish from a breeding colony. Now I understand how you select for smart, healthy, well-adjusted fish simply by not trying to raise all the fry. I'll never fret about Swordtails grabbing a few slowpoke fry again! It's both brilliant and beautiful, the way you allow a degree of natural winnowing to keep your strains strong. I guess that's the fruit of good record keeping, that's you've found your way to such balance. Kudos & thanks for sharing.
As usual, it's an on-going process. I try something, attempt to measure the results, and modify the process as necessary. Good records are an asset. Charles
Suzy puttin the foot down!
Yes, and Kate agreed with her, so that male went to the Orange OB vat. I have to admit he wasn't a good Particolor OB despite me liking him. Charles
🗣️Show us the entire greenhouse!
We have done that in older videos, but maybe it's time for another. Charles
i have a couple 3 or 4' tall trash bins that had guppies in them, but now they are gone. there were obvious signs of raccoons but it's hard to imagine they would be interested in, or able to get, all the tiny fish. the only other possibility i can think of is that the raccoons fouled the water so bad that it killed all the fish. the water smells like sewage. fortunately i have some guppies from the same batch inside the house.
Raccoons are adept at catching fish, but I can't imagine they'd bother with such small meals. They do have the bad habit of defecating into water. That could explain the foul water. Charles
how are the pleco's that survived the winter storm from a few years?
They are still doing well. I had planned to set them up for breeding this year but didn't get to it. Next spring, I'll move them to a 1200-gallon vat outside with caves for spawning. I'll trigger the spawn by pumping in cool rainwater. Charles
I admire your commitment to live trapping them and releasing them elsewhere.
I thought I had responded, but RUclips says I didn't. I try to give them a good home somewhere else but here. Coleto Creek has lots of good raccoon habitat and the landowner likes wildlife. I checked, and he doesn't hunt raccoons. Charles
