I really appreciate you taking the time to show how to clean and lubricate grandfather clocks. I've had mine since 1987 and last Christmas rhe chimes stopped working. Today, after ordering your kit, I finally took the time to clean and oil it. The chimes are stricking once more! Thanks again!
Somehow the 4th video was deleted I don't have a replacement video but the process is the same as when you removed it. I need to make a replacement video but would be nice if I had the same style of clock to do so. The Bench Jeweler. Mike E.
Thanks so much for the videos and information. I now understand why my Grandfather never let my mum near his 1890’s Hermle wall clock which I inherited many years ago. Although he showed me how to clean and oil it, he wasn’t an expert, as he over oiled it being mostly blind. Also just inherited two Grandmother clocks (1920’s & 1987) so good to know about different greases. Might just invest in an oiler too rather than using my Grandmothers old long hat pin !!! 🤣 Brilliant and useful information, so thank you again. ❤
Good work on doing your trade. Glad you're on the mend from that heart attack. I wonder how many young people are picking up this trade. I'd hate to see this fade away some day. I am making this my third career choice but finding a school to attend on clock repairs is not easy. So watching you helps me fill in the questions I had. Thanks for all you're doing here and take care.
I just bought your kit. I can’t wait to jump in, clean my parents’ grandfather clock I inherited and get it to work again. It was working fine and then started sounding sick. Thought maybe it was uneven. I couldn’t get it to work did nothing. Then I tried the carpet. That didn’t work. After that, somehow the middle weight went to the top! Oops! Too high so now I have to deal with that as well. I really appreciate all your videos! Thank you!
Wow, that is really excellent information. This video is like sitting down and spending an afternoon with a craftsman. What a gift. Thank you. I will try to order a kit, if we can work out shipping to Canada.
@@rhjgold hi, this was an old comment. We did indeed work out shipping to Canada, and I received my kit during the winter. I used it in March to clean and oil two grandfather clocks that had stopped running. Both are now keeping perfect time, and are happily chiming and striking. Thanks for your outstanding customer service, your great products, and your helpful advice.
Thanks so much for taking the time to teach us the right way to clean and lubricate our clock movements. It's so refreshing to see a craftman that is willing to share his craft with those of us that like to tinker. I have a Kieninger R movement that just recently stopped chiming. And my bad I used the wrong oil (Hammond Organ oil supposed to be the finest oil, at least what it says on the can...) Hopefully I will be able to clean the pivots and oil them correctly with the plethora of information provided in this video. I am going to order your kit and hopefully will be able to figure out how to have it shipped to Canada. Thanks so much for sharing your craft. Also hoping your health is improving and that you have many years ahead to pass on your tricks and tips to us.
Morning, Friend... I've been enjoying & learning from your interesting tutorials here. Thank you for making these. I hope your continuing to get well after your heart episode. I guess none of us are getting any younger, hu? Take care...
What part of the selector is broken or missing? Movement Number on the back of the clock movement. A picture of the selector would help. The Be;nch Jeweler Mike E.
When a new movement is ordered and shipped, or when a new clock is purchased, a fine-grade clock oil is typically used. So yes, oil will work. However, I prefer to use a specially formulated clock grease, which, in my opinion, performs far better for maintaining and protecting the movement. The Bench Jeweler
Great videos, thank you for sharing your talents. I ordered the cleaning kit and can't wait to get it. Going to oil a 1971 ridgeway grandfather clock. Keeps good time, but the chime and gongs aren't so good. Is there a part 5 video coming out?
For some reason, the 4th video is missing or was deleted it goes back into the cabinet just reverse as it came out. If you have problems email me and I will walk you through it. The Bench Jeweler Mike E.
No, they stopped Importing it at a reasonable price. You use the same oil for all parts of the clock. On the escape wheel just oil every other tooth or every third tooth. When using the custom oiler you just want to be sure not to put too much oil on the escape tooth that it draws down the tooth. The Bench Jeweler.
I just happen to have bought my first Grandfather clock from an auction. That was a few blocks from my home a few days ago. There was a newspaper clipping down at the bottom of the Clock case. It seems the Clock was made by a master woodworker who was in world war two. And made canes and other things for his buddies in the war. There is a picture of the gentlemen with the Clock in the clipping. I can not find any other info on the Clock Is there somewhere on the Clock I should be looking? I also have not been able to find one that looks like it anywhere on the net. Except for at an online museum that comes close to it. I will be buying one of your kits. Going to watch your videos and hope to learn how to take care of the Clock. Just Subscribed.
No, we discontinued its use and if you look at the kit photo we removed it from the kits. You use the same Red Dragon Oil for both the pivots and escapement teeth. The grease is used on the cam. I'm working on a new video that explains this.
@@rhjgold Thanks for the clarification. I cleaned my grandfather clock once i received your kit. The triple chime and gong were really dragging. Now they are working fantastic! Thanks. Quick question; the three weights I have are 3lbs 14.5oz 3lbs 15oz and 5lbs 3.5oz., are the 3 lb'ers for the chime and gong and the 5 lb'er for the time?
I looked up a Hermle Grandfather Clock 460 series. And found that the top half of the clock case looks just like mine. The face and bottom half are not the same. That is the closes I have come to finding one like the one I just bought.
Would it be possible to send you a few photos to look at of my Clock? Maybe you could give me more info on the Clock? I really know nothing about it. Thanks.
Hello RHJ. Thank you for helping find out the make of the clock. I am on vacation right now so I can't take a photo of the back of clock. But I can send you a few photos of it I will give you my email and you can send me a blank email with your address And I will send you the Photos I have on the laptop with me Until I get home to take more photos of the back of the clock. Hello RHJ, I got your email and sent you the photos that I have. So I can't take the photo until l I get back home. I am truly grateful to you and also happy that you are willing to take time out of your day and work to help me out I mean that I am just not saying it. I now at 58 years old and wish I would or did have someone to teach me about working on old clocks. I am on Disability because of a spine surgery Back in 2010 and another in 2013 to try and fix the first one. And not to be funny, I have a lot of time on my hands now lol. If I had people to give me there old Grandfather clocks and a good teacher I would be all set lol. All jokes aside thank you so much. Maybe this old dog can still learn a few new tricks?
Watch oilers have a very tiny tip and it's hard to deliver the right amount of oil the clock pivots but they will work. Be sure to use odorless mineral spirits and some high-impact cleaning tips to clean the pivot wells out. The Bench Jeweler.

I have used transmission oil on my clocks for 30 years, all perfect.
Would silicone dielectric grease be a good alternative to clock grease?
Great video! Thanks. My chime selector arm is broken. Is it easy to replace and how do I find the correct part? Thanks in advance!

Is there a video on how to put the movement back in? I can't find one.
Did you ever make Part 4 of this series where you install the movement back into the clock?
Yes, somehow I deleted it by error I don't have the up load video.
