Mentor (noun): an experienced and trusted counselor or adviser. Have you ever had a single conversation with your "sensei" Daisaku Ikeda? Does he know your name? Does he know your problems? Can he provide you with counseling or advice when you need it? If no, how can there be a true mentor-disciple relationship?
If we think that we cannot have a mentor disciple relationships without being one on one with the mentor and spending a lot of time with the mentor we are limiting ourselves. Of course I agree it would be better if we could have the same contact with Sensei as he had with his mentor Josei Toda but in an organization of millions of members this is impossible. Nichiren Daishonon inscribed the Gohonzon as the object of devotion and chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo as the practice to acxhieve the same state of life that he did as the Eternal Buddha. President Ikeda once said that the mentors are the Gohonzon, the Gosho *the writings of Nichoren Daisahonin) and the three successive SGI Presidents who showed the correct attitude in practice through facing persecutions. Because the Gohonzon is the ultimate manifestation of Buddhahood and chanting is a practice accessible to anyone we do not need a mentor standing over us all day long,. We just need to continue chanting and studying with the same spirit as Nichiren, the Gosho, and the three SGI presidents, with the determination to protect and nurture our SGI organization and to continually strengthen our faith. We also have leaders in the SGI with various years of experience pracxticing and putting the Gosho and president Ikeda's guidance into action and breaking through major obstacles in their lives who can help us understand and apply the teachings and show great breakthroughs in our lives. As we do this- encounter and overcome obstacles and create deep human revolution in our loives our faith increases based on actual proof. Nichiren also stated that actual proof is the only reason we continue practicing Buddhism. Today millions of members are experiencing the validity of SGI Buddhism all over the world. I have been practicing 54 years and am getting happier and happier every year.
Long answer. I hope you don't mind and even this may not clear the question up completely for you.. Of course anyone is free to believe whatever he chooses. In studying SGI Buddhism for many years the prime point I have found is that Shakyamuni did not reveal the essence of his enlightenment until the last eight years of his life when he taught the Lotus Sutra. All earlier teachings were provisional and only partial teaching leading up to prepare people for his ultimate teaching. He instructed that these earlier partial teachings be disgarded when the Lotus Sutra was taught. Even in teaching the Lotus Sutra however which is the only teaching he taught where all people were predicted as attaining enlightenment, even evil people- he did not create a practice whereby anyone could actually achieve enlightenment because the time was not yet right.. It was Nichiren a Buddhist monk in Japan 700 years ago who studied all of Shakyamuni's teachings and realized that the Lotus Sutra was the ultimate reason for the Buddha's appearance and Nichiren who created a simple practice that anyone could do chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo- the essence of the Lotus Sutra- to reach enlightenment in this life time without having to be a monk or give up earthly desires. That is why we consider Nichiren Daishonin to be the Buddha of this time period....called Mappo, an evil age when the Bodhisattvas of the Earth- people who chant Nam Myoho Renge Kyo will emerge and create Kosen Rufu- the pacification of the land through the spread of Buddhism and Buddhist values based on the absolute respect for life. In SGI we have no monks, priests or intermediaries between you and your enlightenment and no need to practice austerities or give up your desires. In other forms of Buddhism, it often is believed that to manifest enlightenment it is better to become a monk. But if that were the case we all would have to become monks and the world would fall apart. We need enlightened millionaires and enlightened cab drivers. In the deepest sense- the sense of our Buddhahood we are all absolutely equal. This(SGI) actually is Buddhism for the modern age. That is why it has spread to 192 countries in the relatively short span of its existence and is the most diverse and active Buddhist peace movement on the planet. We have been awarded many hundreds of international awards and honors including The United Nations World Peace Award, The American Congressional Peace Through Youth Award etc.
Seeing ever one around the world practice is strange to me because I’ve been practicing since I was born and I never really realized that everyone practices I don’t go to meetings really but I chant ever day with my family and I think that’s ok
