People fault this for not being the original (and it's certainly not as thematic) but I actually think it's brilliant how the filmmakers introduced a completely new character into an existing story and all things considered, made it work. I haven't seen that very often in film, and it's fascinating when it's done well.
Yeah and back then it was viewed as more respectful to the film than simply dubbing. It showed they loved it enough to put in the work to get your country to want to see it.
I feel like its aged even better now just because of the way history is preserved through a lot of newsreel film, and foreign reporters getting entangled in another country is something that still happens today so it actually fits quite well in a film that echoes world war II horrors and the bombing of hiroshima/nagasaki.

I gotta say, for an American adaptation it actually was very respectful to most of the originals tone and message (outside of the nuclear bombing condemnation which I guess was a no-go for 1956 American audience) and Raymond Burr really gives a haunting performance during the city destruction scenes.

Even in Japan Godzilla stirred controversy with the the anti nuclear message, it was very bold at the time to make a pretty direct comparison to Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombings and the lucky dragon incident. Yeah it's no surprise they toned it down when distributing it elsewhere at the time.
I think it was better done then godzilla returns in that it kept the message close to the original, but you do lose out in a few key moments making it worthwhile and much better then some cuts that were made in other films
They don't like to be reminded that _they_ killed all of those people.
I felt his character was like a Edward R Murrow watching London getting bombed during the Blitz.
@@thegnarledpirate9198 The American people didn't kill them, a handful of people in the government did. The government doesn't want to remind people it killed people. One of the perks of being in a constant state of war is that the Pentagon gets to control the --propaganda-- movies and shows coming out of Hollywood. You've got to remember also at the time the US was in the nuclear race with the Soviet Union.
From my interpretation, Gojira was meant to solidify to the Japanese of the horrors of atomic warfare, while Godzilla: King of the Monsters meant to teach Americans of the true horror they have created.
I see it the same way, purists be darned
The American adaptation of the original Godzilla pretty much also set the standard for decades of anime localization

I think the thing i can appreciate with this adaptation is the show of respect they have for the story. We saw with Varan and King Kong vs Godzilla how they could butcher a Japanese monster movie they keep the original themes in and I can respect that.
Also mad respect to Raymond Burr, who not only does a fantastic job in the film but who also fought to keep the 1985 Godzilla a serious film over the original plans of making it comical.

I think the beginning with Martin's narration over a destroyed Tokyo heights the foreboding suspense of the movie greatly.
Sadly I have never seen the true Japanese cut ☹️ the fact that Raymond Burr did it all in 1 day is very impressive
David Kalat's commentary track really made me re-appreciate this version of the film. He pointed out that amount of effort put in to appeal to American audiences meant that they really had faith in this movie to be successful. Taking the time to shoot new scenes and recording new dubs took time and money, and it manages to work very well.

Just found your channel through RUclips reccomendations of your Shin Godzilla review. Ive only ever seen the original when I was young because of the cinematic significance but never looked further down the pipeline and completely ignored the American iterations but after seeing that review and seeing that Hideaki fucking Anno directed it im hooked!

Burr's performance is amazing, there's no doubt about that. If any of you are interested in seeing an edit I've made which adds him to the Japanese version, feel free to HMU.
I'd argue that the film's anti-nuclear message wasn't deleted in the American version. The anti-nuclear message is already inherently there by Godzilla being created by the atomic bomb and the oxygen destroyer and that wasn't taken away. Because Godzilla was created by nuclear weapons and he causes destruction, that means "nuclear weapons bad".

You hit the nail on the head. Without this version, I probably wouldn't even be a fan, and I imagine so many others would say the same. I'm so glad my dad showed me this. It was the gateway
Worth noting: the American re-edit was a huge hit in Japan as well! Also, the film doesn't completely dub over the Japanese footage, leaving much of the original language in place, using Steve's narration to explain somewhat about the meaning. But even then, usually the film stands back a moment to let the original actors take a shot at conveying the meaning to people who don't speak their language -- sheerly by their performances.
The original KOTM was certainly the most respectful of the early Americanization of the original Kaiju films. Especially when compared to the likes of Gigantis or Varan.
Gigantis might be the funniest dub out of the Godzilla series, and that's its only redeeming quality lol

For a moment I thought the original was taken down.
I remember middle school me had my mind blown when I learned that Steve Martin was inserted. I immediately put my tape in and watched and realized he was never in the same frame with most characters. The handful of times he was we only saw characters from the back.
I'm glad more people have seen the original Gojira but I don't want King of the Monsters forgotten. Some of Martin's lines are great and him waking up in the after-math of Godzilla's attack still sticks with me.
Pinky and the Brain had decent parody of Raymond's role. It ends with him going hand to hand with godzilla.

This is honestly a classic.
This was my first Godzilla film, and while I would rather watch the original this holds a special place in my heart.
One thing to point out regarding this movie: though it is a recut and released differently from how it was originally, one would say this movie fit the qualifications of an adaptation within its own context as it was revised for an international audience and has a different execution despite sharing the same story as the original. If we define this movie as an American adaptation, then this would not only be the first American Godzilla movie by technicality, but this would mean that the American Godzilla has always been the Toho Godzilla.
SF Debris did a really solid defense of this movie. The Japanese version is superior, but this version is so fascinating and I'm glad it's on the Criterion blu ray

Good review. While Mr. Burr said himself that shooting was done in one day, the actual schedule was more forgiving, though still quick. He loved working on this film and was proud of it. It shows.
I had to stare at this for a full minute before clicking trying to figure out if they had really run out of monster movies and were reduced to updating their old videos
Great review as always man! I always greatly appreciated Burr's acting in both films and even would've welcomed him in others. The youtuber Nedziller created great clips of a colorized version too.
I appreciated that they put Burr in the path of destruction. The key characters in the original are kind of off to the side during the rampage. Jibakusha prejudice perhaps? If they were hurt by the nuclear monster, they'd be lessened?
Honestly, I never realized until I was an adult that this was not the original film.
Ive always felt that if there was a new novelization or comic adaptation of the original Godzilla that itd be neat to incorporate Raymond Burr in it. I think he works very effectively as a side supporting character.
YES!! Someone online is FINALLY giving this film the justice it deserves!! As a massive lifelong G-Fan, I am SO sick and tired of hearing people online CONSTANTLY saying awful things about this film for no reason at all other than the original is better. And, honestly, it’s kind of ironic because all of the anti-American Godzilla fans who talked badly about this film wouldn’t even know of Godzilla if it wasn’t for the very film they tear apart (this film). I believe that’s called biting the hand that feeds you.
P.S. As a side note this was the very first Godzilla film I ever saw. When I was 2 I was really into dinosaurs and so, on my 3rd birthday I had a dinosaur themed birthday (as well as a broken arm). And after my arm was fixed and out of a cast, my brother introduced me to Godzilla and showed me his Godzilla VHS tapes. And this was the very first one that I watched. And from that moment on, I was hooked. And I have been a HUGE Godzilla fan ever since. Afterwards I immediately showed my lifelong friend and neighbor Godzilla and the two of us would act out the film with me being Godzilla and him being Steve Martin.
Now THIS is something I never expected. As someone who always prefers the Japanese cuts over the American cuts (except for special exceptions like Godzilla 2000), I have never seen most of the American cuts. But now I'll be able to, through these fantastic reviews. This is a genius way to keep covering more Godzilla content, and I'm excited to see what you do next.
Someone mentioned matching the clothes from the original movie, but they also matched the sets. They made an exact (or as exact as they could) replica of the office set for Burr to be on, and created other sets that looked like they belonged to the same scene. There was more detail put into this one day of shooting than they do for Power Rangers.

This Film aged like fine wine. It's just as entertaining and great as the original.
This the very first Godzilla film me and my little brother ever watched thanks to my Father. I remember him bought the VHS on day and me and my brother was hesitant about it but after watching it, we are so invested, we became fanboys to our favorite franchise to this day. Still have that Vhs this day.

Both versions are great. There was an opinion piece in the Washington Post saying the Americanized version with Raymond Burr was whitewashing, but let's be real, we were all lucky this film was even released over here. There were plenty of Americans at the time who had first-hand experience for reason to not like the Japanese because of the previous decade

I was fortunate in that it only took me until sometime in the early 1980's to finally see the original Japanese version of Godzilla. I believe it was at the Thalia repertory cinema, they had a Japanese film festival and one of their most promoted films was Godzilla.
Imagine there was an ultimate (fan) cut that mixed the original 1954 and Raymord Burr-starred Godzilla movie in the upcoming 75th Anniversary of Godzilla franchise next year....
Ngl this made me respect the American version a lot more.

This was my first Godzilla movie
My favorite episode of Perry Mason.
This is my personal favorite film of all time. Yes, I do ever so slightly prefer it over the original, though that margin is so very slim. Godzilla King of the Monsters (1956) is a film that I have adored since I was a child, and is probably the one film I have seen more times than any other film; not just Godzilla, but films in general. I also consider Raymond Burr to be my favorite actor in film history, and though he is no longer with us, his performance here and later will always have a special place in my heart, just like this film.
I'd argue this film helped Godzilla become an American icon. Despite being from Japan, you can't deny the place G has in American pop culture.
Raymond Burr did NOT work only one day. It was a short shoot, but more like a week, not a day.

The first time i watched this version was on the criterion bluray and while i don't really like it, i gotta say i do like the steve Martin character and Burr's performance, like i can imagine him being part of the cast in some other speculative adaptation of sorts.
First Godzilla movie I watched, was only 3-4 years old, was actually kinda scared too but loved it, watched it like 10 times
The first Godzilla movie I saw thanks to my 4 year old mind being blown watching the teaser for Godzilla 1985. It was also the first black & white movie I liked. One thing no one gives enough credit to is how well the American scenes are woven in. Sure it's still obvious by nowadays but it's still done better the most movies and shows done today.

I tend to prefer the American version over the Japanese because I think too much time is emphasized on the love triangle that occurs in the original. I always felt that was the biggest crutch in the 1954 version.

Nice to see a review that doesn't outright shame the American version of Godzilla 54/55 which made audiences, (myself included) be enamored with Godzilla for years to come. Yes the Japanese cuts of all the films typically are better as the dubbing are often cheesy, and much of the subtext is lost due to poor dubbing/cut scenes. I will say that the American ending for Godzilla 85 is far superior to the original, and much of the poor effects that make the films more silly were often cut, which wasn't always a bad thing. Godzilla is an icon internationally now, and it means something different to anyone who watches it.

I didn't appreciate this one as much as I should have when I was younger.
I always recommend that people watch both the Japanese and American cuts of the original Godzilla. While some may say that all nuclear themes were removed in the American version, I think Steve Martin's initial scepticism about Godzilla eventually turning to horror when he finally attacks could be representative of the USA finally realizing the horror and questionable morality of the atomic bomb. I could easily be wrong though.

I just watched this the other night and the only thing going through my head was “why does everyone hate this version of the movie? Is it really because of the dubbing? Raymond Burr? It’s a bit short? I didn’t mind it at all
I saw this version when I was a kid BEFORE I saw the original version.
I personally think this version is boring, but boy, do I respect it. This is the version that reintroduced me to the Godzilla franchise after 4 years. This version is also incredibly impressive. Upon first glance, the average person probably wouldn't guess that it's an American version of a Japanese film. It's a great alternative version that still holds up today.

It should be remembered that WWII was still fresh in the minds of Americans and that showing things from a strictly Japanese point of view in a film that was not considered art-house like the Seven Samurai was not going to go over well with an American audience, this is the sort of movie being shown at the time huge bug monsters were shown. Raymond Burr give a sort of Edward R Murrow characterization that is like an outsider watching what is happening around him and if you look past the obvious it makes the movie interesting.
