    It's a great car. I don't get your complaints. I have driven a 2016 model, and it was very peppy and fun to drive. Left the line quickly, and had great driving dynamics. Solid, and authentic. If you care about a bigger screen, and that's your main concern, get the Sonata 1.6T. This screen is perfectly fine, functional, and has all the features anyone would need. The materials in the Passat are high quality and solid. The 2.0T is very efficient and tunable, and offers plenty of acceleration for daily driving. Does 60 in the lower 7 seconds all day long. If you want the Euro Passat with the 1.4T or 2.0 TDI, go ahead an import one. This one looks better and does the job really well, at a great value.

    I have a 2018 fully loaded Passat and I love it. It really is a joy to drive. I’ve had Acura’s & Audi’s and VW is very similar in terms of driving dynamics and an overall premium feel. It’s smooth & quiet with plenty of passing power. It’s basically a full size sedan, the back seat and trunk is massive. Classy, elegant looking car. Accords and all are great but the Passat is definitely a little more premium in my opinion. There’s just something about German cars that gives the driver a very neutral, planted feel on the road and the VW Passat delivers that feel.

    The new Passat may break any new ground, but it is an exercise in good market strategy. Take a platform that most agree has good bones and smart packaging, give it a cosmetic update for minimal cost, and let it rise on in an otherwise dying mid-size sedan segment with the aim of scooping up all the buyers that Ford and GM are going to lose after they discontinue their mid-size sedans sooner on, in a world where everyone becomes obsessed over Crossovers and SUVs.
    I mean, why mess with a sedan that was a winner from the start? The Passat has nearly full-size Toyota Avalon levels of back seat, trunk space, and overall interior space in a mid-size car at mid-size prices, and it’s very class-competitive in ride and handling balance, refinement, and smooth quietness. Now the package looks a hair less conservative. Yes, the updated dash display still is too small and too low on the dash and some updates from the new Jetta and Arteon would have been welcome, but if you still want a car and an overall competent midsize family sedan, I recommend the new Passat on a general standpoint.

    I recently bought a Passat SEL in the same exterior color but with the black leather interior. I'm happy with my purchase. I looked at the Arteon, but decided against buying it because of the hatch back. The fiberboard cover that's dangling by strings from the hatchback looks cheap will fall apart in no time.

    I know it's difficult for you to say this as a reviewer, but I'll help you on this one. The Passat WAS a great car in the past. In 1998, I test drove a newly designed Passat and was amazed. Silky smooth manual shifter, drove like nothing I had ever experienced, great looks, great interior. Leased one for 3 years, leased another for 3 years. Loved those cars. Fast forward to 2010. When my lease on a BMW 335 ended, I leased a VW CC. Great car again. These machines (passat and CC) were all built in Germany, and drove like German cars. They were truly "a poor man's Audi". The Passat they are building today can't hold a candle to any of those cars. They even sell a different Passat in Europe because European drivers wouldn't buy this car. VW is hurting their reputation by offering "junk" like this Passat you tested. They should just kill it. If they went back to their roots, I would look at them again, but not the current version.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 4 года назад +2

      Unfortunately, VW found that Americans weren't willing to pay what Europeans routinely pay for the Euro-spec Passat. When the current "Americanized" (i.e. bigger, cheaper) version of the Passat was introduced in the US sales increased several fold. Sadly, VW doesn't give a s**t about the American Passat. It exists simply as a place holder for VW faithful who want a relatively inexpensive faux European midsize sedan.
      The news isn't entirely bad, though. The top trim Arteon, a vehicle close to the Euro-spec version, has an MSRP around $45K. But dealers in the Pacific Northwest are offering them at about $7000 less than MSRP and negotiating even lower prices. So if one is looking seriously at an Accord 2.0L Touring or Camry XSE V6, the Arteon is a viable competitor.

    No matt. You can't make a minute long argument about how much more powerful the other options in the class are and act like that all important and then just say "oh but that doesn't matter, let's just throw it out there window" that's the same as saying to someone "you are really ugly but I would never say that to you because it's rude" The fact of the matter is nobody buying these cars cares about power so don't even make the argument. People shopping in this class care about interior quality, ride quality, interior sound level, fuel economy and styling. This is the least offensive vehicle in its class in terms of appearance, especially compared to the new Sonata which is why it's still relevant at all

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  4 года назад +1

      I agree, for those that want something subdued and conservative, the Passat is great. And yes the masses don't care about power. But the masses also like technology and toys, and the Passat has none. The people that will appreciate the Passat (those that enjoy good handling) are likely to be enthusiasts, and enthusiasts also appreciate power, which is why I thought it was an important point to bring up. Those enthusiasts can now get much more power and better handling from the Accord for the same money, while also getting a nicer interior, etc.

  • @davisflyer
    @davisflyer 4 года назад +6

    Why on earth VW continues to hurt their own car sales I will never understand. 174 hp is not competitive in this segment. At the very least the drive-train should have consisted of the 2.0 from the GTI/GLI as well as their 7 speed DSG transmissions. While they still wouldn't be at the head of the class at least they would be competitive!

    I know these are going to be heavily discounted but I don’t know why anyone would spend $32K on this new Passat. If you’re afraid to go the CPO route and get an A6 (or A4) or 5 series (or 3 series) for the same money, you have way too many legit and more appealing options. It’s a shame, because the B5 Passat was an amazing car with a 6 cylinder and awd. This current Passat would be a fine rental car for the weekend away.

    The one feature you don't get in the competition is the 18.5 gallon gas tank. Personally I like a car with a lot of range. The Legacy has about the same size tank but I doubt it will match any of the other competitors for mpg.
    As for the simple conservative look both inside and out, personally I like that way better than any of the competition.

    I was wondering why they still sell the old Passat in North-America. It seems that the EU Version would be too expensive for the US and that`s why they cheap out there. Other reason: They will focus more on rolling out EV Models now and so they just keep the model for now and switch to the ID4 (and other models later). When it would sell in Golf Numbers they would still update it to the new model, but it isn`t. - Great Review by the way! Stay healthy everybody out there!

      It's popular among the people who like basic German ergonomics and build quality, who know how to drive and don't need 400 sensors, or who already have one from 2012 or newer, and don't need two. Passat buyers aren't trying to impress Camry owners with newer but gaudy "looks", and radios you cant upgrade through Crutchfield in 6 years. Passat buyers don't need an easily scratched key fob ... just a compact one that fits in your pocket, and isn't weirdly large.

    bring the Passat they sell in Europe, that is a far better model. They also have a Passat wagon. We get all the cheap VW models here in North America.

    Decent looking for a sedan.
    But has lost some of its German DNA.
    Big tall bulky Germans fit well in the old passats. The new one not so much.
    Deal breaker for this German.

    I hope you know the time now is not appropriate to buy cars...

      Of course, but people can still do research for the car they'll buy after this time has passed. These videos continue to be viewed years after I post them.

      HellsJerome87 it's good with all the incentives going on at dealerships. But besides that, it's a terrible time.
