The opening organ riff to Chest Fever still gives me chills 55 yrs later
I miss those Heavy organ riffs from back in the day. Vanilla Fudge Keep Me Hangin On, Zep your time is gonna come and of course, who could forget Watcher of the Skies, I'm sure I've missed a few. Classic stuff
i found a copy of this record in 1985 when i was 15 years old ...and at that point i was listening to hendrix, cream, quicksilver messenger service , the who etc , while my school friends were listening to speed metal and butt rock . i was teaching myself how to play guitar by listening carefully and playing along, but when i sat down and listened to this album, it was a big turning point in my eventual decision to become a songwriter and pursue music professionally . about a year ago , robbie gave one of my comments about ricky danko a "like" and i got the chance to return to him my humble thanks for this work of art and related its value to me and how my life was changed and influenced by it. so, as a musician, a canadian ..and a human being , thank you mr robertson .., your musical spirit and love will never be forgotten ; may the raven guide you to the elders and the eternal place xo

raised on Dylan and ,,,,the Band. immensely powerful, rich and amazingly original and heartfelt music with no real national origin,,, just inspired heads collaborating in a zone never to be repeated.

Big Pink was very important to me as a kid.I loved the Band,for 55 or so years.My first encounter with the Band when they backed Dylan at Forest hills in 1965.
I've loved this album since I bought it in 1968 and then the CD in the 2000's (so I could play it in my car). Now I have it on MP3 player so I can sing along road-tripping in my KIA Soul. My favorite album is Big Pink that I love to sing along - especially "The Weight." So sorry another member of The Band has left us. Hope I get to see them in heaven and we can all sing praises to the Lord.
Fired up the sound system today and rummaged thru a box of old reel to reel tapes I have had for a very long time.Decided to do it blind, so I reached in and pulled out the first reel I grabbed on to. I should do this more often. This album was on the reel along with some Zombies, Procol Harum, Cream and a few others. Cranked it up, kicked back, and closed my eyes. I think somehow I got transported back to the 60's. Man did it bring memories flooding back. Could almost feel the spray on my face as I popped out of a tube on the north shore of Oahu as a kid. Who says time travel is not possible? I say it is thru music. Anyway, hope y'all are enjoying this as much as I am.
The passage of time sees what was , is no longer. Robbie left his mark certainly. We all leave our mark in our own way. I won't ever have the ability to impact so powerfully and widely but i do what I can do in my own way. RIP. Gone but not forgotten
the soulful singing on this album is just insane, specifically manuel and danko.
55 years ago. So, in 1968, the old guys mused about music from 1913.
I actually do. My favorite guy, along with The Band, Edmond Hall, was born 1900. Listen to the clarinet! Search Edmond Hall. He makes my hair stand up. Let me know if you like Ed.

My worn out copy was purchased when the first pressing reached the stores. Doesn't say "The Band" anywhere. Just "Music from Big Pink". I treasure it as much as my mono Beatles LPs and my mono Fresh Cream and of course The Band's follow up.
Well, on the inside cover it does say The Band - and the lists their names. Next of Kin get the nod too. ;)
@@revereconsultantsyep, at the time they were called The Crackers (as the record company didn't like their previous idea of being called The Honkies) so it was released with no band name - just their individual names. There was, as you say, "the band" listed above their names on the liner notes.

Great album, an education for me at the time. Easy Rider popularised their music, deservedly so.
Easy Rider for this 60 yo Kiwi [New Zealander] was one of my all time favorite movies. Along with Vanishing Point. The final scene in Easy Rider teared me up. Wyatt & Billy were totally misunderstood by rednecks. Has anything changed...

Not likely- since Levon died in 2012 after making a doc critical of Robbie’s songwriting credit deal-
I can sympathize w both sides- but Robbie picked Levon’s lower Midwest carcass clean to song ideas --

You're a little kid. I was 13, but was into Herb Alpert at the time. It took 3 years, summer of '/70 at overnight camp, to see the light. Now I can say The Band has been my favorite for 52 years.

Shortly after The Band made it, my Babysitters and other Young Women made sure to let me know all about it. Seems my wavy red hair had cashed in somehow. Then, times changed! 😭 RIP Robbie. Time to get back with your Brothers. God bless you all.

I understand how great and important this album was in 1968 and still is today, but I still prefer the versions of every song that is on The Basement Tapes.

I love this album, but I absolutely have to be in the right mood to listen to it. Or more specifically I need to feel like I’m at a certain low speed, or I find this album totally intolerable to listen to. But when I’m in that particular mood there is nothing better to listen to.
I found this album after reading Eric Clapton's autobiography.

I love being an old hippie and feel sorry for people in their teens & 20's who have never heard this (and other) classic music from this era. Today's music is mostly a waste of time.
But people now have access to all good music from the beginning.

Just watched a documentary on Eric Clapton that said he ended the band cream because he wanted to explore music like this. Don't get me wrong this is great but I call it a downgrade. I think that psychedelic drugs increase the speed of a person's evolution. He moved on from all that hippie sh*t. But my god it was glorious, should have stayed there.
I agree he was glorious. I disagree with the downgrade thing. Cream itself only has one "psychedelic" album and the rest are blues rock ot whatever. "Derek and the dominos Live at Filmore east" is the definitive proof that even after Cream he was superb, psychedelic or not.
