  • The Jamstack is the Worlds first attachable guitar amplifier. Does the World actually need one of these with so many great and functional practice amps out there? Let's find out. This video was 40 minutes in length cut down to 10 mins or so. A lot of the fast motion is 8x-20x real-time speed.

    I hope you like my honest user experience review. Also, Since filming the video I found out you can actually switch the plastic phone holder around into a left-handed orientation. This is done by removing the screw that holds the hinge in place. I didn't see anything in the instructions regarding this and actually found it in help tutorial video elsewhere.

    I used modelling amp for several years which were great, but recently got really tired of the LCD menues/submenues, multi- function amp knobs, buttonpresses, having to attach the amp to a PC to access all features, backing up tone banks to the PC in case they get overwritten, lost or corrupted etc etc - just couldn't be arsed with it anymore so I've gone the other way now - just 4 pedals and a valve amp - simple, straight forward tone heaven.

      Same with my Fender Mustang amp, i tried a lot of VST plugins and amp sims through a good quality audio interface and the Fender models still sounded best even through their own usb interface which was only 44.1khz 16bit, but id imagine Fender knows how to simulate their amps best since they built the real ones but that still doesnt make a phone note useful. You could run your effect through your phone, its just a computer which is what the Boss and Fender modeling amps are doing, so if you do get some good enough plugins it would be cool to use the phone as a processor for effects between your guitar and an amp, that could work really good. Basically a pedal you can switch to anything you want. Im not a fan of tiny speakers with this thing but hey if it works it works or put it out to a better speaker.

Or if you want something close to what this is supposed to do, get the Boss Katana Air (which delivers all the purported functionality aside from clipping onto your guitar) for as little as A$70 more.

    I've had one for two days now and my first reaction was crap. But i downloaded and paid for some apps as well. Kind of pricey toy is all it is. I finally started having good results with the Jam-up app. You can dial in a guitar tone that is ok and play along with an mp3. Ive got a few blues backing tracks on my phone and found it quite entertaining to practice lead guitar with. My dog thinks I'm weird walking around the house playing to a backup band. I think I'll keep it just for that. I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone. It's a gateway to the apps you have to buy to sound worth a darn.

The screw pin looks the same as for GoPro accessories so unscrewing the pin & flipping the holder should correct the problem. It seems to be just a Bluetooth speaker with a phone mount. All the software is third party and the processing is done on the phone. For around $5, you could just plug your guitar into your phone then turn up the volume and bypass all of the hassle or connect your phone to any bluetooth speaker you have. Maybe zip tie the speaker to your guitar too, if you really want the jam stack experience.

    I like the thing because it attaches to the guitar. If I had one I'd have no desire to clip my phone to it. If I wanted to play along with pre recorded music I'd use a "regular amp" and "Garage Band". This is good for playing outdoors or on the go. As for lefties...the world is made for right handed people. It is sorta is, what it is.

    I've got a Jamstack for a couple of months now and this review is fair. To add my own experience:
    THE GOOD
    - Construction quality is very good
    - The clean/direct guitar sound is good
    - As a Bluetooth speaker, it is superb
    THE BAD
    - It doesn't allow you to play guitar over Bluetooth streaming...
    - The iPhone cable is actually two cables connected together
    THE UGLY
    - In iOS, only Tonebridge works, but badly (you have to manually turn off the noise gate in every tone). I couldn't get any other app working (i.e. Amplitube)!
    My workaround : I bought an iRig HD2 audio interface and, with it, the Jamstack delivers a great guitar sound. I believe that the Jamstack's problem is that it has a bad audio interface (or, at least, one with severe compatibility issues), which is not acceptable for the price. But I really like its size and audio quality, so I hope that Chris Prendergast can turn it around with a second version correcting the issues...

    Maybe disconnect the Bluetooth to use the wired connection? Might be the device is prioritizing Bluetooth and is recognizing the wired connection as a charger. Now, the reason why not put the effects in the amp, is cost, and logic. The tones in the app are processed by the phone, so it would be redundant to add a processing unit in the amp, just to have some tones built-in, and that'd have made the device cost more.

    Shane, I bought one of VHT's 30 watt amps with all the bluetooth and app combo's where you could build your own virtual amplifiers. But you had to use Garage Band or several other apps to do this. Did it work? Yes, but you basically had to be an amplifier designer in order to understand the thing. After hours of fiddling around, "building" a "decent" sounding amp, then I had to figure out the whole mic'd speaker thing. Where and with what etc etc etc. It was insane!! Literally 3 hours of screwing around, and finally got something that worked. I played for less than 5 minutes and got a phone call, which nearly blew me out of the room, because the ring, came over the amplifier. Then I found all the hours of work I had put in, were lost, because it didn't save it in the settings. I immediately took some great pics of this "quality US made amp", boxed it up and sold it on eBay. Took the proceeds and threw a few bucks more and bought a used USA made Fender Hot Rod Dlx. Never happier, plug and play.
    I get it, there are the younger generation out there that never knew a world without computers. They never had to lick a stamp or envelope and wait a couple weeks for a reply letter. They never had to actually load film into a camera, take pics and not know if it came out ok or not, then send the pics off to be developed. Wait at least a few days (until overnight developing became a reality), and then find out that 1/4 of the pics of that priceless moment were no good and that moment was lost forever. They look at this tech stuff and just breeze on through it. But I remember you talking about someone on stage, getting their amp hacked, and the hacker changing the settings and tone during the show. LoL another issue with this generation being so computer savvy lol.
    Plus and play real amplifiers for me. Keep the bluetooth etc etc stuff for other applications. If you want to be able to plug into something tiny and portable that sounds tiny and portable, give me a pignose 5w any day of the week. As long as you don't turn it up too loud, you can get some pretty sweet blues tones out of one. I have one back at my sister's house in the US. For playing in the desert while the sun goes up or down. As long as I don't get bit or stung by any of the various deadly creatures out there in the "bush" ;) Bob in Germany

    Katana Air seems to be the far better format for a portable amp. I never thought this was a useful, or necessary, idea honestly. I've had a ZT Amps Lunchbox Jr for several years now and I've never thought it to be "inconvenient" due to the fact that it doesn't clamp onto my guitar - it runs on batteries, powers 2 pedals and puts out 35w into a nice sounding 5 inch speaker. I plugged my 20£ voxamplug into a vibration speaker-£10
    30£ total cheaper and definitely did it before this was on Kickstarter
    It used to work with Tonebridge although Tonebridge sounds won’t come through it anymore

    I guess it would be good if you were camping, at a hunting cabin, on a trip, or in a hotel room-but then would there be phone service everywhere in the wild? Does it have effects? That would help sell it if it had reverb, delay, etc.

  • @mikejones-vd3fg
    @mikejones-vd3fg 5 лет назад

    I like the concept, you could basically show up to a gig with just a phone go straight to the PA, have your tone in your phone. Its all silicon and copper under these modeling amps anyway, a phone is no different, probably even more powerful. Problem is there's so many phones and configurations im not surprised this isnt going to work good, well sort of, you'd think by now they'd have simple audio connections pretty much standard on all android phones but i guess not, i still remember having some time trying to get bluetooth device recognized so once thats improves these things should be golden.

    • @mikejones-vd3fg
      @mikejones-vd3fg 5 лет назад

      @Steve Yes im serious, im talking about the concept of this idea not this gadget itself, once android gets there software sorted out, using the power of your phone to run effects will be golden. On one cheap old $20 phone you can run way better effects than a $20 pedal, plus you can switch them up all for free basically, well the cost of the interface, which is what we already do now with audio interfaces and computers, this is just replacing the computer with a phone, which is a no brainer nowadays they're well powerful enough, i bet your phone has better processing power than the new line 6 helix floor board or whatever, so why not use it.
      For the first time it allows amp sims and VST plugins, that whole world to be used portable that is huge, before you needed a home studio with a computer and audio interface, maybe some were doing it portable with laptops but you still had to be plugged in. The fact that that world can be brought out of the studio for the first time thanks to phones, is going to be pretty sweet, we'll have to worry less about getting gear for sweet tones and have more time to play.

    I’m not sold on the Jamstack itself, looks cumbersome but I use the tonebridge all the time on my iPhone, I go straight into the phone with an iRig I picked up for £10. I like it for late night playing and learning songs as I feel it gets me a close sound to the song I’m learning which I find helpful.

  • @MikeKeller
    @MikeKeller 5 лет назад

    I think some of the comments don't grasp the concept. Yeah, a Pignose is easier (and old school cooler), but the idea with this is that (a)it's a portable amp; (b)the app is supposed to give you the built-in sounds of the guitarists; and (c)you can play along, something that lots of beginners would appreciate. And it's supposed to do it all in one easy package. But it's a big fail, especially the "easy" part. Even if it can be got working, it's not worth the hassle.

    I’ve got a little Vox mini 3 that takes batteries or power supply and has input for guitar, vocals and my IPad for drum tracks. Great for busking because it’s small, light weight and inexpensive. It’s a modeling amp but sounds pretty good. Also has reverb for the vocals. It’s really a great busking, bedroom amp for certain. Or I use a Smokey Amp with a mini cab. That thing was to much. Like the honest reviews my friend! Thumbs up!

    I see a unique reason for use, if you travel quite a bit and would like a rechargeable amp on hand for your travel guitar when reviewing different music and different styles of music..... only rechargeable amp I found on the market, obviously very niche crowd.... but I'm getting one! Hope I'll figure some work around for the guitar tones (like possible wireless guitar adaptors that have built-in guitar tones) something i have in my guitar bag RN... exciting to find something rechargeable, I don't want to mess with batteries (and can be recharged in a coffee shop!)

    I’ve only just started the video so I wanted to type this ahead of time to see if you had the same issues: the clamp to hold the phone was busted on arrival. Would not have held the phone if I’d tried to use it, and the Jamstack absolutely wouldn’t clip to my guitar (that obscure model, the Stratocaster) safely. I certainly didn’t risk getting up from the sofa with it attached. I can see some benefit as a little rechargeable amp sitting on a table etc but it went back in its case in day 1 and hasn’t been out since.

    From Leo: Mechanically, that is a lot of stuff hanging off a single #8 self tapping screw. I am also not loading any software to my phone to play my guitar, period.. We used to play with technology, now technology plays with us. VOX makes a couple of small battery power amps if you want to be portable, and they actually work (and have effects). I am clearly not their customer.

    If they had just made an amp that clamps onto your guitar that would've at least been half practical. But NOOOOO it needs to somehow connect to your phone to work!?!??

  • @peterschmidt9942
    @peterschmidt9942 5 лет назад

    I just had a look at their site - did you have the bypass button engaged? That would explain the clean un-effected tone. Overall, seems a bit pricey as they're using third party software and essentially you're paying $249 US for a low strap on low powered amp, phone clip and cable for. I suppose if you're busking it would be OK.

  • @szczerzo
    @szczerzo 5 лет назад

    With the size of the amp and phone the app should be build in in the jamstack and just controlled through phone bluetooth. Otherwise just use phone with tone bridge plugged to guitar with iRig (as with jamstick) and bluetooth speaker of your choice.

    I don’t get why you want to fix this to your guitar. I do use an iPhone or iPad as an amp with iRig and headphones or a small speaker, when traveling, and that works well. I just don’t see why you would want what is basically the same thing attached to your guitar.
