From the first episode i watched on Discovery channel, I was a fan. Les has always been 100% genuine and that's what makes his show so much fun to watch and learn from. Trapped out in the wild and gotta survive? Remember What Would Les Do? Then do That!
For what it's worth, being able to see the cameras in the shots as well as the scenes that showed Les going back to pick up a camera that was just used to catch the previous shot you just watched is what made the show so fantastically compelling. So I'm glad Les won that battle.
Les your passion shines brightly throughout all your work, especially Survivorman. I was born in 1989 with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle bones disease). I was born with 7 broken bones and was destined to use a wheelchair for the rest of my life. When I first found Survivorman circa 2003, I immediately fell in love with it. Nature has always interested and fascinated me, but being a power wheelchair user anytime I’m outside my home, I never got to go outside and explore like I wanted. Watching each new episode and each new season of Survivorman, your work completely captivated me and brought me deep into nature like I’d always dreamed of being able to do. Les, you are an inspiration to me and have brought me so much joy with all your shows throughout the years and I want to wish you all the best! Take care! -Derek P.S. I absolutely love all your director’s commentaries and have enjoyed every single one I’ve watched so far! I hope you keep making more. U did a great job in a totally different time where social media and things weren’t around so to fathom u going to these places alone. That constant reassurance that u were alone always kept me a huge fan of u.

My friend that I'm getting started on your content enjoys this from a filmmakers perspective. He's a photographer/filmmaker that wants to learn why I enjoy your style compared to network tv vs films etc.
I wish there were 15 seasons of this show. It was revolutionary, it was real, and I think I've only watched his rival one episode and that's because he had Marshawn Lynch on an episode. This was by far and still is my favorite TV show. Well done Les. Make more
Hi Les! Firstly let me say, I'm a huge fan and love SurvivorMan! Thank you for doing this Directors Commentary! I appreciate how authentic you try to make all your shows. I do have a few thoughts about the Sonoran dessert. Certainly some of this is detail/minutia you wouldn't need to or have time to get to in the show. 1.) Javelina (Collared Peccaries), in my experience and based on what I have read in the news, generally only attack if you have a dog with you. I have hunted them, and in general they want to get away from you. Usually when you bump them, the lead "pig" will "woof", and they will run away. I do know of once instance where a hunter had to defensively shoot one, because they were heading down a trail somewhat aggressively and the lead pig took it as a charge and charged him back. 2.) I think you mentioned this above, and I agree this was probably one of the most optimistic times of year to survive. In the Sonoran desert, in most months it would be pretty hard to go for 4 days with only a gallon. As you mentioned, many variables come into play. Also, most water sources are pretty hard to find if you're out randomly exploring the desert, and the water you do come across has seen heavy usage by animals. So in that case, you'd need a way to purify the water as well. I agree with your point about Giardia, but I have friends who have done "survival" camps, and have gotten really bad diarrhea in a matter of a day or two from bad water. Given your experience, maybe you know what they got (some bad bacteria?) out here? I have also heard that dissolved minerals might have the same effect? 3.) Most of the plant edibles you came across are only available for a limited time in the Spring. There are some varieties of prickly pear that have fruit into Summer. Also, some of the prickly pear & such will upset your stomach or give you the runs if you're not used to it (I know from experience. ;-) ). The mesquite pods will fall to the ground, and usually after a few weeks, various bugs, etc. will eat them. Sometimes you get lucky and some will lodge in the crotch of the tree. Mesquite pods are delicious! 4.) Scorpions - you're absolutely right. They love shoes, and hiding under things. Black widows - these ladies are very, very shy and will run and hide at the first sign of trouble. Never have had any problems with them camping, etc. I have about 10-20 of them in my yard at anytime. Just remind the parents, kids were eating worms and bugs long before Survivorman. ;-) I tried cooking and eating an earth worm when I kid. 😀 Yes, please do a wild harvest down here! You have many fans in Arizona! Again, thank you for all this material!
This desert episode was always one of my favorite.I have watched every episode many many times.I just want to say that when i worked every day monday to friday I would wake up an hour early before having to leave for work and watch a survivorman episode with my cup of coffee. It somehow made the thought of having to go to work bearable because I could really enjoy myself every morning before having to leave.I absolutely treasure these episodes and when things get me down,I at least can watch survivorman and have some kind of peace in my life.
I live in Tucson and I loved this episode. The commentary was excellent and I’m glad you appreciate our desert. Many people don’t or can’t see the beauty.
Thank you so much Les. I really enjoy your content please keep making more. I never say thank you to people I watch but this is special for me I guess.
Thank you so much for posting these. I remember watching that old Dick Proenneke documentary when I was a kid and it filled me with inspiration and a desire to be and live in the outdoors. You're in that same category of great explorers and teachers. Keep up that great work, Les. Much love from Texas. You were the first, the best, and the ONLY Survivorman. Hooah.
As a newcomer who's been binging survivorman on here and loving it for its practicality and humor. Also as someone unaware of the Bear Grylls controversy until recently, i see that situation thing like this (borrowing from Dr. Ian Malcolm): Survivorman fans to Man vs Wild producers: If I may… Um, I’ll tell you the problem with the content that you’re using here, it didn’t require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn’t earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don’t take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you even knew what you had, you patented it, and packaged it, and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now [bangs on the table] you’re selling it, you wanna sell it. Well… Man vs Wild Producers: I don’t think you’re giving us our due credit. Bear Grylls has done things which nobody’s ever done before… he squeezed water out of a cow dung... Survivorman fans: Yeah, yeah, but you all were so preoccupied with whether or not you could rip off Survivorman that you didn’t stop to think if you should.
Thank you for the love Les. Just know, even all these years later, a teacher who grew up doing farm work in the Ozarks with his grandfather can find your content and realize how amazingly useful, inciteful, helpful, and genuine it is. True creative endeavors always win out
Bear Grylls was a member of the SAS. That's the British equivalent of the Navy SEALS. And you talk about requiring discipline and knowledge? WTF? This poetic hate of him is ridiculous.
@@keithbecker3142 Well, first my joking commentary on the situation was aimed at the Producers of Man vs. Wild that copied the things Survivorman was already doing. Second, it was a joke. Third, while I have no doubt about Bear Grylls ability to operate in a combat scenario, that's a little different than what Les was teaching and preaching. And I'm sorry, but it's also just funny to me that with the dozens of water sources Les can show to be present in an area, Man vs. Wild went with being sensational and had Mr. Grylls do things like squeeze water into his mouth out of cow dung. If you don't see the humor in that, then i think we're on two different wave lengths.
@@keithbecker3142 the issue Les has with Man vs Wild is that it was pretending to be something it was not. If it was marketed as an adventure show instead of survival, then Les wouldn't have had any problems with it, imo.

Les dont worry about any other survival show. I have grown up watching your films and love them, absolute best! Thank You
Seeing you nibble on these grasshoppers made me smile because they were going down back-to-back, showing how hungry you actually were, without really showing it in your awesome filmmaking journey.
Btw, NEVER feel sorry to stop the video to talk to us, thats the nicest part of D.C. ;)
Thanks for all that you have done in the industry, you have been my biggest influence fyi. Definitely one of a kind filming techniques that you pioneered and others have followed including myself. Really enjoyed this episode and laughed when you said another guy rode the dirt bike. Haha Cheers to you Les, have a beautiful weekend.
I just was in Flagstaff Arizona. Living homeless. It's almost like what you do man. You are an idol to me Les
Take care!
-Derek
P.S. I absolutely love all your director’s commentaries and have enjoyed every single one I’ve watched so far! I hope you keep making more. These feel like I’ve gotten the chance to sit down with you and just talk about everything that was going on that the viewers knew nothing about! I just love it so so much!
Thanks for this one, Les! Tucson is my home, & I think this desert is beautiful! So many people have no idea how pretty it is. ❤✌
This brings me back to my mind teen years… the year is 2006 and I just came home stoned, looking for something to watch., Survivorman cam in clutch
lol nice
Love when you bury bear 😂. Your show has always been the survival show of choice. And I'll remind anyone that hasn't seen it should of they want real survival advice.
This is my favorite commentary!! The whole episode is very educational and with him explaining his experience is epic!! Yeah Lester you go buddy👍👍🍀🍀
Love this episode, it is one of my favorites, especially since I lived there off and on for 25 years.
I could listen to this man speak all day ! total legend !
I have seen every episode on TV..... Own all the DVDs..... And I still stop what I'm doing to watch these shows. Thank You Les.... You're awesome guy.....thank you for the art.
les, you're unlike any other tv star and i just wanna say thanks. you're one of the good ones.
I am so glad you also air-play the bass in the opening!
I always liked that original theme, Im so impressed that Survivorman actually wrote and produced it, thats why it went so well with the show.
LES, growing up in northern Michigan i loved watching Survivorman. I think I love all your films more and more as I watch. you my friend are the OG or all OGs. thank you
Holy Moly...I remember seeing this show back when, time does fly by. Les you were revolutionary in a lot of ways. I just remember the funky soundtrack and quirky sounds and music in your shows. Great work!
U did a great job in a totally different time where social media and things weren’t around so to fathom u going to these places alone. That constant reassurance that u were alone always kept me a huge fan of u.
i like revisiting these. Really like the "Les on Les" perspective.
One of my favorite episodes. Commentary is icing on the cake. Thanks, Les!
These director commentaries add such an awesome flavour to the show! Really love the backstories and insight into the episodes! Thank you so much.
Everything you do is awesome! Please keep doing more directors commentaries!
I grew up in Northern Ontario. Elliot Lake and Manitoulin Island. I spent lots of time in the bush. I remember back in 2005 first watching this show. Good stuff. Thanks for the commentary.
That thin bandana can do a lot of protection from thin material for your noggin from the sun and bumps and scrapes . I’ve always wore one at work
The beef with gryls is HILARIOUS! Keep it up les!
I was impressed knowing he did all these trips, for years watching him. But the fact he wrote the intro is MIND BLOWING! I loveeee it. So catchy.
Love Arizona episode! Classic! Can’t even count how many times I’ve watched it.
Can't wait for the Norway Director's Commentary. Hope I'll get to see that soon.
I like these commentaries for any extra info that you don't get from just watching it; I think it's really fun/neat.
Make more
everything i know about survival, i owe to Less. Thank you and rock on!!!!
Yes, please do a wild harvest down here!
These commentaries are one of my favorite things on the internet. Thanks Les!!
I moved to Tucson twelve years ago and fell in love with the mountains and the desert. The perfect place for a country boy and a 4Runner. 😀
I live in Tucson and I loved this episode. The commentary was excellent and I’m glad you appreciate our desert. Many people don’t or can’t see the beauty.
This is my favorite episode. I don’t know how many times I’ve watched it for all the desert plants I grew up around. I wish I knew all this back then.
Thanks Les! I really appreciate these classics and have been enjoying the heck out of Wild Harvest. Beers on me if you're ever in northern Oregon.
Thank you so much Les. I really enjoy your content please keep making more. I never say thank you to people I watch but this is special for me I guess.
Les just except the fact you paved the way. The first and best! 🐐🐐🐐
I love these commentaries Les!
I love these commentaries! Thank you so much Les. These always make my day. Been watching for over a decade.
Ian Malcolm):
Survivorman fans to Man vs Wild producers:
If I may… Um, I’ll tell you the problem with the content that you’re using here, it didn’t require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn’t earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don’t take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you even knew what you had, you patented it, and packaged it, and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now
[bangs on the table]
you’re selling it, you wanna sell it. Well…
Man vs Wild Producers: I don’t think you’re giving us our due credit.
@@keithbecker3142 SAS are a bunch of fascist bouncers.
@@keithbecker3142 the issue Les has with Man vs Wild is that it was pretending to be something it was not.
If it was marketed as an adventure show instead of survival, then Les wouldn't have had any problems with it, imo.
