These Director Commentaries are better than the original broadcast Les. Tons more information is conveyed with you talking to us. Cutting limbs of cedar trees to make a bed and protected space at the base to sleep under is what my grandfather showed me as well.
These videos legit feel like we're chilling on the couch with Les, listening to him recounting his past adventures and stories.
We are ❤
Thats whats so great about youtube.
This is awesomeness.
My father died of cancer in 2007 he was a big fan of Survivorman he loved exploring camping and hiking he spent most of his life in the army teaching weapons and survival classes as well as demolition classes as a combat engineer and he got me into survival and the outdoors in general the Utah Canyonlands was the first episode we watched together in several weeks after he came home from the hospital to be on hospice it was the only episode we had seen when he died six weeks later your show has fond memories for me and thank you for putting them all on RUclips
Beautiful
That's awesome,thanks for sharing that,and thanks Les.
God bless u. & Grandfather. 🎉
ITs crazy to think about how long ago this was and how much energy Les still has
Its crazy to think he didn't like your comment my friend.
He said yoga saved him... Really inspiring me to do the same
@@davechristian7543 he doesn't really "like" comments
You are a pokenerd
People don’t understand that being close to civilization doesn’t take anything away from the situations you were in. Starving or freezing a few miles from a city is the same as starving and freezing a hundred miles away. It’s the same ordeal, and the same skills
And more likely...I'm closer to utah than Borneo.
Back in highschool, a friend of mine died of hypothermia half a mile from home. He cut through a forest preserve late at night and got wet. It was cold out. He crossed the highway and lost consciousness in a parking lot. "Close" to surviving, doesn't count.
@@grantwiersum7394 Wow. That is an incredibly sad and valuable story.
Damn right...dead is dead and death doesnt care. You can be disabled stuck in a motel room, food water and controlled environment. Now you fall...survival situation.
If your starving or freezing a few miles from a city you made the wrong choice.its is not the same as living with lions an shit dude.not the same at all man.
These videos are like sitting with Les on the couch and he shows you the insider bits and pieces, i'm looking forward to every one of them.
Revisiting my comment to say I absolutely enjoyed this one. nice setting, long and full on information and little interesting facts.
Can't wait for the next ones! (exciting that he will make director commentary's on all his content! He truly loves his fans.)
love these man!! i love when u pause and talk about stuff as you have done in the later episodes instead of talking over the vid. we all love the long ones, it makes us think ur really going in depth (bc u are). thanks again you’ve helped me so much!! god bless
Agreed
For sure! I love Les pausing and talking, I've seen these all 3or 4 times, the commentary is what makes the directors commentary worthwhile:)
@williamm9435 yes, this is fun & informative.
Shout out to Luke for the great editing, man was on top of all of Les’s suggestions. Down to the frame even.
I couldn’t agree more. At 1:27:06 I thought the editor missed an audio cutout, but was pleasantly surprised moments later
Les you are So Legit!
..Don't anyone or any 'cyber bully' tell you otherwise. You are the man, the first, and the original survival man on tv introducing us to all this coolness!
Yeah I agree but it's also okay to understand why people might question him unfortunately most things you see on TV are fake so at least for the defense of that person I can appreciate they're skepticism and if you read their article they simply just want questions answered in fact they definitely don't really jump to any conclusions just they just point out the fact that they came to certain questions that needed to be answered think about it a lot of times people and those positions usually are hurt because they believed in something and found out that it was hollow and so they go on a crusade to try to expose the world but Les does an amazing job 🙂 and you can see that from his response to the situation
@@brick2392 that's at least half of them, the other half are actually just sad.
Survivorman is back and now on RUclips, how did I just now learn of this. These Director Commentaries are great. Keep it up! Thanks.
yes it's so cool to have his RUclips channel directly !
I remember discovering it already on YT around 2012 but this is next level with his commentary ^^
Les,
I grew up watching your reruns as an adolescent. I'm now almost 30 and have intense appreciation for your dedication to both art and survival. I moved from Arizona to Colorado last year and had a nostalgia blast watching your episodes set in both states. You truly are a master of a diverse skillset. As someone who has loved exploring wilderness my whole life, your stoicism and determination are very inspirational.
I hope you understand the profound impact you have had on many of your longtime viewers, and we thank you dearly for uploading your collection. Keep rockin'.
Nolan
The only true survival series. No Bs drama just a man and the wild...
I am a bit embarrassed to admit that I watched all the other fake survival shows when I was a kid along with Survivorman. As I get older though, I am now 30, I find that your show is the only one I come back to and rewatch and the more the years go by the more I admire you and the less I respect Bear Grylls types. Thanks for these commentaries Les and all your work🤝
Thank you so much for putting these shows up on RUclips. Watching them saved my life back in 2009 when my quad broke down in the woods in upstate NY and I had to walk back. I thought I could make it before night, but it started getting dark before I was even half way there, and I ended up having to build a shelter. I got hit with almost 6 inches of snow, and learning how to build a shelter and a fire from you kept me from freezing to death that night. Thanks for making this show, thanks for putting it up for free for me and my kids to watch, and thanks for saving my life.
You should do commentaries on other survivor shows. Educate the public what works vs what doesn’t. Being in the military, I have done many different courses. But when I learned of survivor-man, I bought every single item you sold. All episodes and music. It’s great to have someone who is authentic and honest. Les, where can we donate??
Too many copyright issues.
buy the film set he is selling on his website. best money i have spent in a long time.
Copyright and I’m sure he wouldn’t want to do that. Probably just make him angry watching a bunch of rip off bullshit. I wouldn’t put myself through that if I were him, he’s already dealt with enough of that
They would sue him for slander... He would tell the truth lol
He does it for GQ. (I think) anyways, he breaks down survival situations from various movies on something called The Breakdown here on RUclips.
you'll always be remembered as our times survivor man...i was in my teens into the 20s watching you and learned a lot...you've left behind a great legacy while youre still alive already..cant wait for 30-40 more years of you with us til im an senior myself!
Doing these director's commentary videos was a brilliant idea. Just brilliant.
Les don't let the people trying to poke holes in your work get to you. We can see you made survivor man with love and compassion. The people that appreciate you and what you're doing realize that this is a show and you are doing your best to convey the survival skills you have aquired. Thank you for making survivor man and thanks for not telling us it's a good idea to drink our pee.
I have been waiting for this one since the start of the directors commentary series. Its my favorite episode.
As someone who literally grew up watching your shows, coming across these on youtube many years later is just a blessing. Thank you for being the teacher you are
used to watch your show with my father and younger brother. we used to go to the creek we lived next to and pretend to live out in the wilderness- middle of San Diego. I remember this show being my dad's way of bonding with my brother and I. thank you for these voice overs- I can now share this with my dad and continue to bond with him through your work.
I love how the remote never works the first time. Lol. Les Stroud has gained my circle of trust. ❤
You're an absolute treasure Les, thank you for keeping these directors commentaries up!
I am 37 and i was 17 when this first aired. You where my favorite show then and now the directors commentary is again my favorite show. I will be buying the dvd box set as soon as i can.
This man's commentary is as good as his shows. I love some Les Stroud! The only real, authentic, honest, and relatable Intel on the market. Keep us informed please Les, you've saved my life plenty with your life's work
I love hearing all the stories. The consistent theme is Integrity, which I've never personally questioned. Your show always came through extremely authentically, and that's what we always loved about it!
Survivorman - Les Stroud videos have easily been the most helpful and influential of my life. I've watched plenty of navy seal instructional videos, plenty of long term survival videos etc. However Les Strouds videos are by far the most practical and real life I have ever learned from. I've done 5 day trips into the rockies with minimal or zero supplies and while yeah... I had his book, his techniques helped me conquer such challenges. Interesting watching him direct a video from 2002 I watched as a premier and explain the minute details of his ordeal.
Literally stopped the video to give a thumbs up and a comment. Giving credit to Mors, Mr. Stroud, you da man!
I have memories of falling asleep watching reruns of this episode when I was a teenager. Still one of my favorites. Thanks for putting these director's commentaries out Les.
Just wanna say that I appreciate the evolution of your film style and experience gained over the course of Survivorman. Both in genuine survival knowledge and camera work. Gained new appreciation for your work re-watching it as an adult(on RUclips) than you gave me as a kid watching you on the Discovery channel. Thanks Les Stroud Survivorman
Mr.Stroud From one Stroud to another, Great work as Always. I love the Directors commentary, very informational and it truly shows All of the hard work that you put into each episode. Incredible as always, Have a blessed day.
These are better than the original show! Thank you, SurvivorMan!
Les - I’m so happy you’ve decided to put all your work on RUclips for us… Watching all these Directors Commentaries is bringing me back 20+ yrs and now we get to hear your behind-the-scene’s stories!! This is super cool, my frostbitten friend! I can’t thank you enough for this gift and generosity to all of us 😃 You know, I’m noticing something with your left eye… Did Rogue and River rough you up? Did you have a fall? Is the turtle-virus migrating from your tongue up to your eye?!? lol.
Ok, I’ve written enough… Much love to you brother and I’m going to get my little girl a copy of your kids survival book! Take care buddy, from your friends down here in Colorado…
Les, Love these keep them coming please ! We have been binge watching the older episodes and this drops! So glad you are doing these commentaries
Hands down my favorite episode, could watch it repeatedly. The overall tone of the experience there seems almost magical due to the terrain and magnificent desolation.
It's great to hear Les set the record straight on all the behind the scenes in these commentaries. All for free too. A man of the people.
Been spoiling us with these commentaries lately!
My favorite episode of all time... the first Survivorman I ever watched.
Almost 2 hours?!!! Now you’re spoiling us. Got my IPA and my feet up to watch this breakdown of one of my favorite episodes. Thank you again Les.
Hey hipster, drinking trendy beer doesn't make you cool...just annoying.
One of my favorite episodes. Thank you for the behind the scenes transparency, and your willingness to be honest about the network politics, and for being you.
Watching your videos at times reminds me of when I lived in the bush and the rainforest. A lot of your survival techniques were standard bush life practice in the late 70s early 80s. We just did it. However, at one stage for a while, coconuts were the staple of my diet and I knew of the small 'Angel Fruit' inside germinating coconuts and loved them. However, I had no idea that they got larger and were edible long after the coconut had sprouted (as you showed on your island survival episode). I also learn a hell of a lot from your directors commentaries, especially the principles behind certain survival/camp practices. I'll be back in the rainforest sometime this year, so I feel I'll be mentally and practically prepared for a long stay after devouring your content.
I really love watching these commentaries after growing up and watching the series when I was younger and learning about survival.
Some things I've always respected about Les is he's down-to-earth, not afraid to learn in front of an audience, and has an immense respect for nature.
Love the two hours. I could watch these for days
As a longtime fan of yours I just want to say Les I love these directors commentaries , I went and grabbed a cold beer and some pizza to enjoy while watching this, you made my day!
Love the reuploads, used to watch all of these way back on tv. Brings feelings of better times 🙏
I love learning about the process. The show is awesome but knowing what actually went into creating it is really something.
@Survivorman - Les Stroud Thank you so very much for these !!!!
That's exciting to hear you commenting this episode. I can clearly recall watching this episode 20 years back. I was literally brought up by your show. Les, thank you so much for doing your job. I am sure there are a lot of people like me contemplating this commentary decades afterwards and feeling like. I am so grateful. Hope you are doing well today.
Survivalman I love your videos and i wish so much that you can make more BIG FOOT hunting. Your BIG FOOT season was the best ❤ ❤ thanks for good work
Let's gooooo I'm so excited for this one. Not only is a great episode but its the first one I'll be present for the release of since you started doing these commentaries! Can't wait!
Watching your videos remind me of the college days and poker nights with buddies at the dorm. Big fan.
Keep up the directors commentaries coming!!!! I can’t get enough
Les. Thank you for creating this breakthrough show. I remember watching them all.But this one really got to me because you captured the mystic canyons out there so well. Talking to the crow was so symbolic of a human kind of losing it, because of lack of water , food etc. But returning to a basic natural being. and your only partner is a crow. You moved me inside on how a human would act. Plus it became a rather psychedelic situation.
You get it.
Peace my friend.
P.j. California.
Great to see background to an episode. I once was at a camp over with some friends and placed logs like a reflecting rocks. Everybody instantly got warmer and went "nice". I did a fire-lite gun-show "Survivorman" shout and everybody laughed.
Les stroud is the man. Love your series.
Les, you live on each time my buddy Josh or I say" You sweat you die" We do a lot of logging and we enjoy your valuable and vibrant ways. Right on Les, George.
Ive been watching les since i was like 6 years old and i ised to "camp" out with him in my front room in my sleeping bag when i was little and now being 25 and still watching him it blows my mind how smart he is like seriously probably the smartest guy ive ever seen information wise
I've been waiting for this one. My favorite episode and I can't tell you why but can't wait
I love you and the show Les, and the more I watch of the directors commentary's the more I know you actually care about your audience. Keep them coming, I'll watch them all! Love from Norway!
Hello Les!
You should do one more episode of Survivor Man but how YOU wanted to make it. No TV execs, no contracts, no time constraints or anything like that.
Just you and your camera. Get your buds to dump you somewhere and make the episode you always wanted to make.
We'll watch
Seconded!
Yours IS better than the SAS survival handbook! I love what you have done here. Gossip is what has killed the careers of many an artist. I have gleaned much deserved respect for you after watching these commentaries. You will survive!
Les! I've camped sparingly in Canyonlands and still had 10x more gear than you and I was COLD! Love you man, love these commentaries. I will watch every piece of film you ever put out my friend. You bring me closer to my grandpa who passed several years ago.....we bonded over your original episodes. 💙
100% agree on creating a scenario that only you are apart of. If you had a 'full' crew with you at all times - how is that surviving in the real enviorment? So glad you kept too your scenarios as the core of the show, its what made it 'real.'
Grew up fascinated with this show! Love how genuine you are and giving extra little tidbits when you found something you might have missed previously or forgot to include! A true survival Legend!
Les, I absolutely love these videos it just feels like we're hanging out talking about the show. You NEED to make a commentary for every single episode you've done, we'll watch every second of them!
Thanks, mate. You will probably never know how many lives you've saved because of your teaching.
I can't help but feel in awe at how you give the locations a sense of scale and "texture" when you shot your documentaries. Most documentaries start "zoomed in" or focuses on just a tiny few details, but with your show it feels like I know the place as if hiking there. I realize there's some magic going on with the editing too, so credits where they're due, your editor deserves accolades too. But man, wouldn't be possible without your sense of where to put the cameras and to angle them just right.
Keep em coming Les! Love these director's commentary. Surivivorman was a huge part of my childhood in my home. Great memories!
I live in Utah. What Les experience in southern Utah wild lands is the gods truth. It will not only kick your ass it can kill you.
Wonderful commentary Les.
👍👍
Did a lot of winter camping when I was in cadets in the mid 90's. We'd hike a few km's back into the woods on foot and dig holes in the snow to pitch the tents. Most of our time was spent learning about winter survival, the gear, hiking and setting up or taking down the camp, that sort of thing. A lot of drills and a bit of tobogganing and snowshoeing for fun. But I remember Cpt Nichols drilling it into us to not over exert ourselves during the day and sweat too much because our clothes wouldn't dry out and would probably freeze at night. First time out, didn't listen. Get drenched in sweat and hang our clothes on a line at night before bed. Had army issue sleeping bags to keep us warm and dry in the snow but after a couple of days I woke up with no dry clothes to wear because they would always freeze to the line the night before. Kind of embarrassing hopping around near naked in a sleeping bag begging for clothes. Cpt reprimanded me in front of everyone for 'losing' (ie someone else stole) a $75 pair of army mittens that I was using, too. I'll never forget how much it cost because he was more concerned about that than me getting frost bite lol. Super fortunate it was a training exercise and not the real thing. But I still had a blast. I learned loads over the years and have a lot of great memories to look back on.
Really love the shelters in this episode. Keep the commentaries coming! I've watched your episodes countless times.
I made my last comments before watching the narrative by Les in this episode. I so much appreciate how transparent he is. I read the articles about the controversy. Especially surrounding this episode in particular. Les explained it PERFECTLY and continues to show his professionalism to the art of survival. My son and I so much look forward to watching all episodes of Survivorman Director's cut. Thank you for bringing my son and I closer together. Especially in our wilderness trips surviving together
Keep it up less. I love the old school commentaries. It’s awesome to see you were still doing things love it man.
Thanks for all the good content Les, greetings from Berlin.
Your show was one show as a kid that would actually get me to sit down and pay attention. I’m sure over the years I’ve used lots of tips I’ve learnt from the show thx a lot appreciate what you have done for all to enjoy !
This is one of the best yet! These videos are my favourite thing - On a side not, that Australian aboriginal art behind you is amazing! Would love to see a video of you going through some if the art / artefacts that you have and explaining where they came from and any stories behind them!
Keep the directors commentary coming!!
Les's director's commentaries are literally the spice of life! 💙! I've been a fan since your first episodes aired; you helped shaped my childhood, have inspired me as an adult, and continue to teach and entertain the masses for the net profit of all humankind! We all love you Les!!
These are always great. Thanks for posting them Les!
Hey Les, love the commentaries! The fall of 96, really end of summer going into fall, my dad kicked me out of the house. I was just 20 year's old. I left for Riffe Lake in WA STATE. I had camped there many years. A friend picked me up and dropped me off at the campground. I had a few supplies, finishing pole, lighter, loose tobacco, pair of pants and an old survival knife. The lake had an abundance of land locked silver salmon, so food wasn't an issue. For the first month I stayed in the campground burning drift wood and burning coals underneath the earth to stay warm at night. By the middle of October the campground had closed and the park ranger kicked me out of the park which sucked ass because the park had showers in the bathrooms and public pay phones. So I hiked trail number 12 which led up to a high mountain plateau and an overlook of the cascade mountain range. I didn't know Jack about real survival! I began building a Wikiup. I spent the next few weeks constantly building my shelter and fishing. By the end of October my shelter was pretty cozy, even big enough for a fire inside and every day I was improving on it. Doing my best to waterproof it since the rains were always coming in. Food became a bigger problem. The fish quit biting. I could spend all day fishing and not catch anything. Even though I would see schools of salmon swimming 5ft from the log I used that had fallen deeper in the lake I fished from. One morning after being seriously frustrated and hungry, I took a small piece of drift wood and carved a lure out if it (I has just been digging earth worms) and tied a hook to the end. My second cast landed me a huge silver. I remember being so happy because my last fish was day's ago. I caught 12 silvers that morning and smoked them in the Wikiup. I didn't know about wild edibles then. So fish was my major food source. But even after a week or two the fish stopped hitting my lure. I made big one's, smaller one's, different shapes and movements but nothing seemed to work. By the 2nd week in December I was starving. Occasionally at night Elk would run past my shelter but I couldn't get one. I tried tying that knife to a long pole as a spear and thought maybe I could hide above their trail and jump down the one 😅. But I didn't even have the energy to try it. One morning I heard someone walking up the hiking trail. I came out of my shelter to see my friend with a bag of food. He said the park ranger told him where I was and that my dad said to come home. I was so happy that day! I was 128 pounds! In 2008 I hiked that old trail with my family and saw my Wikiup was still being used by someone. I never took it down when I left. I was glad some other unfortunate soul was able to use it to stay warm and alive. Was the only time I actually had to survive with almost nothing. God Bless you Les!......... Jess
Les, buddy, I love the drama in your voice. It is a survival situation and as long as your speaking the truth then I say go for it.
Love the commentaries Sir.
Amazing stuff I have been watching you from the start.
I love watching these and seeing the level of excitement and nostalgia les gets from rewatching his videos from years ago 😮😢
I just realized there is a subtle nod to Utah in the intro when you mention you're teetotalling tonight. heh
i love the early episodes. the 4:3 ratio and sd quality is peak comfort.
Les, thank you so much for doing these director’s commentaries! I’ve been watching Survivorman since the first season, and am really enjoying your commentary. It’s great watching these episodes over again nearly 20 years on with your thoughts. Thank you also for your series on Sasquatch. (I’m speaking as someone who has had a conclusive close encounter myself) I have a great deal of respect for anyone (especially someone of your stature) who can keep an open mind and entertain the idea of the possibility that something (someone?) can exist in the face of ridicule and derision, even though they themselves have not seen conclusive proof.
That comment about “Right now those people up there are eating lobster”, one of my favorite comments in your whole series. We all have different experiences in life.
Thank you so much for being awesome and sharing your experiences.
It really makes my day when these pop up and especially when they are much longer than the episode I know I am in for a treat. Thanks Les.
Yessssss well said
God bless you les, your series is the reason why I love the outdoors so much!! All the tips you have shared with us and how to respect nature really has had a big impact on me, and I’m sure many others!
Great to see the plug for the children’s book. I have a 8 and 11 year old that are loving watching these with me and Santa will definitely be delivering a copy for them this year!
Your shows are exciting , I believe your shows are absolutely real life that you’ve shared through the years. I appreciate you sharing showing your expertise with us. I’m sure you’ve saved many people who watched and learned from you. Thank you Les.
I always enjoyed all you episodes and I'm glad you uploaded them on RUclips so I can relive these times maybe your son will follow in your for steps
I'm Soo happy ge put this on here. I've watched this episode 3 different times in the last 6 months. I love this show and the commentary makes it all the better. Thank you Les🤝❤️✌️
I love these directors commentaries. Huge fan of the show growing up and I love getting to rewatch these all again with the added behind the scenes details.
Freaking love hearing different woodsmen talk about the nuances of how they like to build and maintain their fires. It's such an intricate craft. You're essentially maintaining a living thing, and the way you maintain it dictates it's health, and characteristics.
I love the commentary Les, keep up the great work
Thanks again Les, always love these commentaries, Survivorman was a huge part of my life as a kid/teen, feels like reliving it all over again watching these. Got all your books, and can't recommend the kids book highly enough to anyone, my 6yo daughter worships that book!
I really look up to this guy. Les doesn't know me but I followed this guy since Snow Shoes and solitude. He inspired me too make videos and music. Dudes a legend and one of the best filmmakers ever. Plus he made the selfie cam famous years before social media
Just leaving this comment to show my support and gratitude for these uploads and full episodes alike. Thanks for all these episodes Les.
I could listen to you talk about these episodes for hours and hours. Absolute legend
