For anyone interested: Santa Catarina Queen = Generally regarded as slightly more cold hardy as they originate from higher elevations in Santa Catarina Brazil if seed source is true. Litoralis "Silver Queen" = Queen palms originating from the higher elevations in South America, cultivated in the Southeast US. This variety usually has a more upright appearance, and a significant amount of tomentum on the petioles and leaf bases with purple or dark coloring at the leaf base. The name comes from those queens that survived the 1980's deep freezes Florida experienced where those palms that survived had silvery/translucent leaflets. The offspring of those palms has been collectively, though unofficially, named "littorals" (or by the sea shore). Piru Queen = Generally regarded as a vigorous "regular" landscape queen palm that is typically most readily available.
I just happened to find your posting today. Very informative I live in Portland Oregon so we are zone 9A. Right now I’m keeping mine in containers and move them out in the spring usually mid April. I have given several away because they no longer fit my room with 12 foot ceilings. I love them.!!🎉
Great video, Jeff! I love my Queens, as they are a staple in my front yard. Living here in South Florida, the maintenance for these beauties are a bit more entailed with regards to fertilization since we have such sandy soil that holds no nutrition, but I'm like you...its worth a little more work because I love em! I've never grown them indoors, however, I hung on your every word since I know you have had much success growing them this way. I feel so at home when I'm watching your videos with all your tropicals. 😀🌴🌺

There are some palms around me & they always make me smile...because we receive snow every year & usually a couple freezing spells & these palms are sometimes the focal point of lawns & in the backyards around swimming pools...I always thought it was too cold here but the Palms say Naw..I'm good planted here!!! :) Happy Wednesday! :)
Great video. I’m north of Houston (9a). I lost one of my three Queens but the other two survived the winter (specifically February 14th) and are showing new growth. One has two new fronds and the other is growing a new pseudostem from a severely amputated trunk. I had cut away the dead necrotic areas of trunk to expose the living tissue. Fingers crossed they’ll recover. We had temperatures in the upper teens with “feels like” temperatures as low as 3 degrees Fahrenheit. I’m surprised the Queens have made it this far.

I love my Queens! I have 2 in the backyard, used to have 3 but had to take one down (planted it to close to the fence and did not know how big the trunk would get). I live in CA (9a) and they do great. The only part that can be annoying are the flowers (our bees cover them and ride them down like an amusement ride when they fall) and then the little orange “coconuts” that fall. I’m always pulling up babies. However, the Queens are beautiful and worth any annoyance!
I'm just south of Austin, where we had temps of 7 degrees for several consecutive days back in February 2021. After reading some of the Comments, I think I'll put my queen palm in the ground in a protected corner next week - didn't realize they were so cold tolerant. I have both a queen palm and a ponytail palm that no longer fit in my greenhouse and that I have to lay on their sides supported by carpenter sawhorses in the garage for the winter. I thought I was the only crazy person who went to such extremes for my plants! It's such a pain dragging them in and out of the garage to water and give a few hours of sunlight on warmer winter days. I'm just getting too old for this, and I don't have access to a service that will store them for the winter. Each of these weighs over 200 pounds, and I can barely get them on the 2-wheeler to move them!
I love the queen palms! They're so nice looking especially when you can see them with a full mature crown. I haven't seen any where I live, but something unusual for anywhere this far north, I found Res Latan palms at a local nursery. They were no larger than your Bismarkia, but they were very cheap too, no more than $30 i was tempted to buy one, but I didn't. I might have to go back tho😂😂😂🌺🌴🌴🌴 cheers and happy planting!!!
When my 'snowbird' parents bought their Florida home I had them plant a few around the property. The pinnate leaves and overall look scream tropical to me! I have a potted 5' Queen, here in southern Ontario that I bought and its kind of my reminder that better day's are to come when I finally retire to Florida lol! Great review Jeff 💚🌴
I want to try a queen here in okc 7a we have several windmills and robusta and a sabal planted, but i would do a queen in a large pot. Are all those huge queens in pots even this time of year? That’s amazing
Oh yes, they are potted year-round and go inside for the winter. Queens are great but the mule palms might be a nice option for your area to try outside, with some winter protection.
I got 17 palms 2 Queens zone 8 this last winter I put 1 in my car port and left 1 out all winter with no damage we had 20+ night's it did get in the 20s .so I believe they are tougher than recommend zone 9+
That is a decent size Queen Palm to take inside in the winter. Any chance you put into the ground and protect and it will survive? I am 6B (Pittsburgh)
I have considered it before, but once the fronds are all tied up, they are so big and tall, would be a beast of a project to protect them. I don't mind just scooting them into the garage.
Hi Tropical Plant Party Thanks for doing this video there is quite a bit of info in the video that I did not know about the Queen Palm, The Goods and The Bads, thanks once again I live in Central Alberta Canada and I bought both of mine (One is 8 foot 5 inches tall and the other one is 8 foot 6 inches tall) in Mid June and they are my first ones ever, I mean I have bought Palms before but never a Queen Palm, and they are both outside enjoying at least 14 hours of sun light or more sense we do get a little more then 17 hours of Sun Shine where I live just for now and they seem to be thriving in the Heat and I do keep a eye on the soil just to make sure it doesn't get too wet or too dry, I will probably leave them out until I think in November or December just to see, How they will do by then, anyways thanks once again and good luck to you and all of you Tropical Plants.

Would these do ok in a garage in winter? Here in central Texas our garage rarely gets below 40. Remember I’m one of those who lost all my palms here in Temple. I’ve had a Queen before but my cat killed it I think! See, she loves chewing on grass. And when I had it indoors she kept chewing on it, thinking it was grass I guess! Little brat. Lol
Hi Lori! Id think they'd be just fine as long as it stays above 40, heck, even if it dips to freezing on very rare occasions, they'd likely be fine since they'd be sheltered from the elements.

My first mistake: majesty palm, killed it. My second mistake: Queen palm. In the snowy Midwest 😂. My dumb azz walked into a local store after I toasted the first palm tree and was like “oh! Another palm tree. Looks different than the last one, cool. Maybe it will live longer. I’ll try again with palms because “so pretty and tropical” and I live where it isn’t.” Yeah. Didn’t know that I grabbed an actual tree that gets huge and absolutely sucks to grow indoors 😂. Why it was here during the winter time in a farm store I will NEVER know or understand. Like I won’t understand why I never look plants up on my phone before they go in my shopping cart so that I know what I’m buying :). Anyway it struggled hard all winter and nearly croaked, but spring came and out it went. Much better now. I’m wondering if it will survive another winter. In my experience with it in a pot-the minute it gets to the point of barely dry the tips start browning and going crunchy. It sucks water like a vacuum.
Oh I don't even know where to start. Oversold because of the ease with propagation and they're not the best houseplants, so it's like the growers prefer selling them with the understanding that most will die and therefore more people will have to keep buying them.

Here in Houston we lost about 50% of our queen palms I’m shocked its crazy but I’m glad to see some recovering
So awesome see some of them returning. I dont think most if any horticulturist expected any to survive. We learned a lot from that freeze.

Mine grows a frond a week…I have a small diffuser right by mine and run it all day. I also keep it near a window.easy so far
Queen Palms here in Central Florida are prone to Manganese deficiency and need to be heavily fertilized. 🌴
Gotta love that sandy soil! Always have to stay on top of the fertilizers with that heavy drainage.
