I was told the test for whether I am ready to own a twin engine aircraft is as follows: Sitting around a camp fire, take two $100 bills, and put them into the fire. If you can do that without flinching, you may be ready to own a twin. Nice video as usual, Bryan! - Martin
I recently inherited a Bonanza. It's been stored inside but not flown for about 15 years when my uncle became ill and stopped flying. I own a lil 150 and holy crap the difference in cost of absolutely everything. Me and a buddy have been going thru the bonanza and cleaning it up and getting it running. I was thinking it would be cool to have a bigger plane but it is definitely getting sold lol. 150 all day everyday, I have all the practically of taking one small person with me and flying a whole 45 minutes away from the airport before I have to turn around.
I purchased a '72 150L for my daughter to get her ppl with. Your cost figures are very much inline with my real world costs. With patience and attention to detail, deals can be found. Then add a little sweat equity throughout the year, cost of ownership will absolutely surprise you. So yes, these figures are inline with the real world. Thanks and keep the good information coming. 16yr old daughter and myself are throughly enjoying and learning from them.
You are a hoot! And, what a great job your accomplices are doing! The line about slightly-used kids (but in good condition) qualifies you for the telephone marketer of the year award. The card swipe is terrific. Great idea to convert my Hobbs meter to click off dollars instead of hours of fantasy. Thank you so much for sharing another brilliant video. I look forward to the next one.
That piece was pretty funny. Was on the fence on buying a piper Cherokee but likely not now. Thanks for the reality check, guess I would rather the money in my retirement account as opposed to the alternative. Just found out about the new wing spar AD on the PA28 so yeah I can understand your point.
I owned a Grumman Cheetah for a couple years and my annual costs were about spot on with your costs. I had different issues at annual(cracked exhaust) that came up and were eye openers as far as "I really have to spend that much to fix that little crack to be airworthy" but overall you deal with it or sell it. As long as I am allowed. I will own my own plane and fly to wherever and whenever I like.
I made the mistake of taking my wife to a fly-in, today. She started looking at sunglasses on the Pooley's stand... and then spent £165 on a pair which are designed to fit comfortably under a headset. That's a couple of hours of flying I'm not going to get to do, now... ;) Whilst it might seem like a good idea to get wives involved in aviation in the hope that they will become enamoured and be encouraging of our flying activities, it has a backlash - they either find out just how much it costs or they become interested and start spending the fuel and maintenance fund ! ... and if you're really unlucky, they'll get hooked and decide to learn to fly and then want to either fly your bird... or buy one for herself... At that point, one might as well sell up and buy a pushbike !
Compare to 23' yacht, Sydney Harbour: Mooring ~ $400 Insurance ~ $400 Fuel - about $50 Oil - see fuel Annual - antifoul - $1500 (you provide the labour, lots of it) Repairs - $2000 (as above) Outboard - $250 (as above) These prices are from 20 years ago, btw. About 400 hours per annum. Given that most of the time on a boat is spent drinking and at ~ 4 knots, flying's good value!
Ha! Thank you. Thinking about the next ones in the queue. One that is not a satire but a fun one. I went out and did mile long wheelies in my plane on an 11k ft runway. That is a couple weeks out. Other than that, it is all dad jokes and pratt falls. :) Cheers!
Thank you. Happy to break it down honestly for you here in the comments. or you can email me bryan@worldsgreatestpilot.com and maybe I can help. I have been an owner for awhile. Its hard but not impossible.
People ask me the same question when they find out I own a plane. I have never done the math because if I knew the costs I would overthink things and sell my bird. I just do what I can afford when I can afford it.
Very interesting break down, a great starting point for a lot of thought. I’d like to see one possibly that factors in taking a note on an airplane, say alone for $30,000, that would certainly change the dynamics quite a bit
Bryan, Thank you so much for this highly enlightening and educational video. Thanks to your detailed analysis of the costs involved I have sub-contracted my children to a local sports bar to slice limes and cut potato wedges. I flat out sold my wife to a melmakian nerf herder so I could afford to open hanger my plane at hicks tied down to a pair of 5 gallon home depot buckets full of cement. I also saved on the airplance which as I understand is made of recycled mooneys. Money in the bank!
Flashback to 1977... Rented a Cessna 150 @ $17 hr wet. The owner even gave me my own key.... He was my instructor too and charged me $8 an hour. :D Paid $130 hr for a Hughes 300B model rental. Lots of fun cheap flying! Not anymore.
Ha! This is so true. I did the math for owning locally and it works out for smaller planes being flown a lot. Less than 100hr a year though and the math gets uglier...
After hanging around a boat owner in the 1980s, I believe my most important parameter is... Living where you keep it. In this case I would want to own a house in one of those rarer residential airparks. These being houses with hangars and a shared airstrip. No cause to fuss about an object miles away and you certainly cannot be without the needed tools when working on it. Of course, then the downside is the absence of convenient fueling and on and on. And no, a tie down would not be enough for me anyway. My problem? I do not have the money!!!
Cirrus needs to have overdraft protection built in so that the CAPS activates at the go-nogo when your balance will not successfully complete the flight.
Thank you for this video. I am about to enter flight school with a boyhood dream of becoming a commercial pilot. My wife's dad owns 2 planes and she said we should just take his. Love the humor tempered by actual numbers. I noticed you didnt include a monthly price for the initial purchase cost of the airplane. That will also be a cost many will include in their hourly numbers. You know I bet you could fly twice as much if you cut down on beer...
@@JustPlaneSilly Not so fast, or true... here in CA, the year you buy your plane, you pay a sales tax on it. Say I can get a low hour E-LSA RV-12 for $70,000. I'll owe the state of CA 9.5% sales tax on it, for the first year. Add in another 1% luxury tax of assessed value every year too. So, roughtly, there wen't another 7350 in the first year. Add on hangar fee of about $400/ mo at KWHP, that's $4800 a year. An RV-12 burns 5 gal /hr. It will run on Mogas premium here in CA, now about $3.50. About $17.50/hr in fuel. You can take a $500 8 hour course and do your annuals/ 100 hr inspections your self in Experiemental if your plane is categorized as E-LSA. Plus probably spend 12 to 16 hours working on your plane doing that annual each year vs making more money, instead. I am an Indian citizen . I want to know where I can find an unskilled job in a flying club where I can do a job for free and get my CPL for free ?
try putting hundred dollar bills in a blender and pouring it into the gas tank.....I find that works pretty well
I wish I may, I wish I might.
I log my dollars.....HAHAHAHAHHA
Its a better system. It should be the standard. Thanks for watching.
This would be even funnier if it wasn't true. Very funny!
It is impossible to justify the costs. But it is worth every penny to be able to fly. I just with it weren't so damn many pennies.
I regard to the wife Bryan, mate you’re punching well above your weight lucky to have her
Future poverty stricken pilots , haven't seen those words in that order before , but definitely can relate lol
Easy for you to say.
That's what I am now. Forget the future! 😎
@@danaskubic2145 truth
How much does it cost? All of it.
And more. Can I borrow some money?
As a new, first time airplane owner, I hope my wife never sees this.
HAHA!!!!! Right?
I'm interested in an 8 passenger.
According to my wife on how much money it takes “all of it”
So if you buy a plane you might have to start a RUclips channel to help pay for the expenses
Double everything for canada
The fact that you never said "future poverty stricken pirates" in the outtakes is a little bit impressive.
HAHAHAH!!!! I wish I had. Thanks!
For cheap flying, go experimental. There is no contest.
In the long run this is true. The up front cost for a comparable 4 seater is very high. I wish I could get into an RV-10. Those are awesome.
Is it truffle oil ? Lmao
It costs more money than I make in a year!
Same here. I use the plane to make frequent trips across the border to supplement my income. FSDO I'm Kidding! Look over there -->
How much money does it cost to own an airplane? All of it.
