    Randy, you need to show how much it costs to fill with electric. Most people don't know, as I, how much it is compared to gas only.

    • @donswier
      @donswier 3 года назад

      Here in Western Washington, with our i3 REx, it costs $3.30 to go 120 miles using our home charger.
      After all the battery is used up, the the range extender gas engine kicks on to average about 40mpg.
      Our electric rate is $.10 per kWh. Google that for your area if you're not sure.
      Keep in mind, if you charge at home each, that equates to 40,000 miles annually all electic.
      We're on track to save about $2000 per year in fuel (leaving our 4Runner parked for most trips, local or distant).

    • @scottcol23

    • @scottcol23

      when i looked up the pricing on the Francis Energy website about their Plug Share terminals it says "The average charging costs range from $5 to $25 and adds between 40-300 miles per charge. Costs may vary depending on your type of vehicle" so Im guessing about 40miles in charge cost $5 and if you fully charge a vehicle to 300 miles it would cost $25. bust seeing as the i3 has a 150 mile max range it would probably cost $17 to fully charge. not really that cheap. My 2018 accord gets almost 500 miles to a tank on the highway and cost $28 to fill up. Ill stick with that

    Well at least Mike got to go on a mini road trip! I feel like an electric car isn't really a long road trip car unless you give yourself a lot of travel time.....go 200 something miles then find somewhere to sit for few hours till it charges few hours off the road is a lot of time even 1 hour is a lot of down time. They need to make these things regenerate their energy. Can't beat the fueled engine cause at least if ya go 200 something miles on a full tank you're back on the road in a few mins. But hands down it is a car that will pay for itself as far a commuter car as long as you have places to charge it that work. I use2 way radios with like 4 mile range if I ever do a multi car road trip it's so much easier.

    • @geoffreyreuther5260
      @geoffreyreuther5260 3 года назад

      A bit to unpack here.
      Initial statement you make - "go 200 something miles then find somewhere to sit for few hours till it charges" is really inaccurate. You're only sitting off the road for hours if you don't have DC Fast Charge, which means you've either got a 1st gen EV that has a sub-100 mile range and is designed specifically as a city car, or you're one of the suckers that bought a Chevy Bolt without the optional DCFC package. Seriously, Chevy... But the point being, a 2nd gen EV charges in about 40 minutes. I know not everyone is enamored with that time, and that's fine. Just wait a few years and see how the technology advances. Because there are going to be 2022 models that can DCFC 250+ miles of range in 20 minutes or less.
      "They need to make these things regenerate their energy." They do, through regenerative braking. But when you're cruising on the highway, you're not braking, so you're not getting anything back. First law of thermodynamics, yadda yadda. This is why the city economy on an EV is always better than the highway economy. Some 3rd generation (2022+) models are going to have built-in PV cells that will allow them to get a little extra range during the daytime, though, so that's a step farther in the direction you're hoping.
      "Can't beat the fueled engine cause at least if ya go 200 something miles on a full tank you're back on the road in a few mins." I suppose the very-motivated will just cram gas in their tank and dash, but when I'm on a trip with my family, we typically use fuel stops to also go to the bathroom, grab munchies, and stretch. Usually takes 15-20 minutes. Again, the 3rd gens with the sub-20 minute charge range will make overall road time for people who do such things basically identical to a stop with an ICE. Also, 3rd gens will have a 300+ mile rated range, and my ICE gets 300 miles a tank on the highway, so the stops should be of roughly equal frequency.
      "But hands down it is a car that will pay for itself as far a commuter car as long as you have places to charge it that work" My other car is a 2nd gen EV, that we use almost exclusively for commuting (not due to range, but because I have a big family and it's too small for people + luggage)... This statement is absolutely accurate. There is no drivetrain maintenance necessary at all for 80k miles, only consumables like brakes, tires, and cabin filter. As for actual "fuel", the EV costs 16 times less per month to fuel than its gas predecessor (a Chevy Sonic). That's a ton of money saved in oil changes, maintenance, and fuel.
      Remember, EVs are still in their relative infancy, and their technology is progressing rapidly. ICE cars have had over a hundred years of development, and the rate of technological advancement is getting pretty close to flat.

    now that I've watched the whole thing, I'll toss in a couple of observations.
    1. Is a long distance road trip in an i3 viable? Define "viable." I might try it without any kind of schedule to keep, knowing that recharging gets iffy and takes awhile. Trying to maintain a pace or having to be somewhere on time would stress me out too much.
    2. Is a little electric like the i3 practical? Either my wife or I could daily that car to work and only need to refuel the range extender occasionally. Either of us could recharge either at work or at home. We have 60-70 mile local round trips to see adult children/families and the i3 is capable. Yes, that works.
    3. It's probably nimble go-cart fun to zip around in the city.
    4. It wouldn't work as our only vehicle because sometimes we take road trips and neither of us would want to put in the work to plan around recharging. That may be because we're on the ragged edge of get-the-hell-off-my-lawn retirement age; can I brew beer? Sure. Is it easier to just open a bottle? Yup.

Can't recall the last time it took more than 5 minutes to fill my gas tank. Second is, I'm assuming that because you need an "account" or a credit card at the charging stations you have to pay to charge the battery. Do all electric cars have no real range? How much does it cost to use the charging stations?

    They've got to improve EV technology (including charging station reliability) before they're practical

    I kind of like the car, but electric cars are charged by diesel powered generators. It’s one of the biggest “green” scams going on.

    did it cost you more for buying the gas and electricity for the electric car than it did buying just gas for the other car

    Why don't you have the i3 coded to hold the battery percentage at 75% indefinitely as long as there is gas in the tank? Everyone who has a REx in the USA get their i3' coded to do this..

      Because then it’s no different than owning a gas car with high gas prices which completely defeats the purpose of an electric vehicle and by the way I do have a coded I choose to run on electricity

      Ok. You're right.. I guess I mean for those long freeway trips using the REx State Of Hold mode can be a life saver, I don't think people use the hold for regular city driving.
