    Been a Tech for 37 years. As a Tech, you will always be the one in the middle that gets sweezed. Cars come back because the shop buys the cheapest parts they can get, then they want you to redo the job for free. I am now disabled, can't breathe from this industry. Glad the stress of it all is over for me. I invested 100k in tools over the years because shops were not willing to buy the right tools to diagnose cars (scope, pressure Transducers, Etc.). Always in the middle getting screwed. Customer won't pay, Owner won't pay, Tech always pays.

    Colin, for a young guy, you are 1000% correct on everything you said. I have been a tech since 1986. my comments...I don't mind flat rate but i know it will change sooner or later but will have to have a commission system, yes we are poorly paid and that depends on the area/state you live, we can't find even descent young techs that won't stay off their dam phone and want to work, they usually last a couple months then get fired. Finding knowledgeable service writers is tough. Our shop is nice, porters clean it, they buy us lunch every couple weeks which is nice. I am sending this video to my service writer/manager which is a rare great guy. Thanks for speaking the truth for us....Hi 5 wrench clatter bro!

      thanks for watching brother! spread the word my man! this industry can only change for the better if we keep demanding change. or else these businesses will go under without fresh talent and top quality techs to flag those hours for them.

    I left auto repair after 12 years for all the reasons you have talked about. I worked dealership, independents and shop management. ASE Master
    Tech. Now I have over $20K in tools sitting in my garage that almost never gets used.
    I switched to oil refinery and make 2X. Average guy makes $150K+/yr. With HS diploma. Full benefits, pension, 401k. I am a basic investor and after 11 years in oil/gas my 401k is over $500K.
    We don’t buy any tools or disposables. Company provides everything. I should have switched industries earlier.
    Anyone reading this should look to city/state, water treatment or utility companies and oil/gas. All are much better than auto repair. For oil/gas the easiest place to get your foot in the door is a terminal operator.

    I make 72 an hour with full company paid benefits and retirement as a heavy equipment /heavy duty diesel/ crane mechanic . I’m in a union and work 6/12s a week . Work pace is extremely chill and everything is done on our time . I went to UTI and everyone was so horned up about working flat rate at dealerships and I thought they were crazy . If you want to make real big boy money and have a career and retirement work in diesel and join a union . I’m 24 .

    I completely agree, I don't need a commission or flat rate to motivate me to get cars done. Having been in the industry since 1995, I've seen warranty times drop over years, and techs are forced to find ways (some cutting corners) to beat those times. I've seen young techs drown when moved to flat rate & ALL they get are the jobs more experienced techs don't want to do, because they aren't "gravy" jobs. I left the dealer I was at for a total of 10 years, for an independent shop last year. This independent shop is by far the cleanest shop I've ever worked in. The pay is far better than what I had at the dealer, (pay based on what fits YOU and what your needs are) with benefits I can actually afford. Paid training seminars (Vision, STX). It's a completely different atmosphere than most shops have. And yes, we are looking for at least one more tech, light diesel. They're hard to find.

    I agree, im a third year tech and working towards my red seal. I think the industry will change a lot in the next 10 years with the tech shortage. Pay is going to increase and if shops want to keep us they are going to have to pay and have a nice work enviornment.

    Like I talked about in my podcast the future of shops is looking pretty bleak as more trend towards being an absentee owner or manager.
    I don't think you can be a leader without being in the building. U don't have to do 100 hrs a week as an owner or manager but I can tell u absentee owners or managers aren't given the same respect. Respect is earned.

    technologically advanced? you mean DRM and anti repair right?

      Well that’s a policy issue more than a technological advancement. That is a good point though. Manufacturers are making it more and more difficult to repair there newer vehicles.

    i agree bro i saw a couple of your videos and your right about a few things im a new tech to the industry and fairly close to you it seems like im a apprentice for red noland ineos grenadier but im lucky they treat me good but the pay doesnt match the time and experience i went to ppcc and im still gettting a degere in diesel technology im nervous about flat rate but im not sure when im going to swtch but im a rare breed im quite the grease monkey myself and its the whole reason i started wrenching in the first place because i love tools and cars i can see myself doing this the rest of my life it depends on the shop these days and people getting into it i love it but time will tell thanks for all the videos keep it up i saw your tool reviews too ive been getting killer deals on amazon and staying away from tool trucks cheers brother

      hell yes dude! i use to work down the street from red noland and almost started teaching automotive at PPCC! im not bashing the field but it does need a serious over hall if they want young techs like you to be attracted to it. i have been doing this since i was 18 and its given me a good life, but the stress involved to achieve all these goals has definitely made me question my career over the years. as long as we can get more techs to speak out in public and start to demand change, we can improve this trade over time for the younger up and comers. you'll figure it out brother and you will get better and better over time. the money and hours will only increase as long as you strive to improve. keep in touch my man! thanks for watching.
