Wonderful stuff. This summer is the 40th anniversary of the beginning of my love affair with the music of Richard Thompson, when a co-worker introduced me to I WANT TO SEE THE BRIGHT LIGHTS tonight, the first of hundreds of classic Richard (and sometimes Linda) Thompson albums I've come to love. I have even managed to hear him live around a dozen times. But regardless of the context of hearing his music I've always been stunned by his musical genius and artistry. Though on the negative side, he has always made my own efforts to become proficient on guitar look weak and pathetic. Whatever it is that I do on guitar, what he does is something completely different.

It beggars belief. If they don’t like his music, why are they even watching this video? If a sensible person dislikes something they just avoid it. It takes someone with a slightly broken mind to actively seek out something they don’t like and try and tear it down.

RT's my hero since the late 60s. I wrote friendly to SWEs leading rock journalist Mans Ivarsson about his opinion why RT is always labelled Folk or Folk rock, while Dylan, who invented folk rock, invariably is a Rocker, and why in those last days we had record shops in Stockholm had his 20-30 cds in that corner, while RT's 1-2 had to cram with The Goinge lasses in Folk (very local Swedish folk). You guessed rightly, Ivarsson never sent any reply.

Frankly, overall, this was a bit poor. It was fun seeing RT faffing about with his guitar and paperwork. And his singing/playing was just OK. But when Zara joined in it was a bit rank. She may have a good voice but it didn't show through this time. Too loud, too raucous. Was she trying too hard? No subtlety. Almost as if she was trying to out sing him.
