If you end up in 3rd those Little Pig books will be great. There are several standards that those will cover so nicely. I do compare and contrast, problem and solution, character studies, and more with them. I have the students write letters to the judge from the wolf's pov to introduce persuasive writing. Never underestimate the power of a fairy tale! Good luck in your first year!
