Well its the best move to be your own boss. I did for 15 yrs. It is much more stress, got the tax losses now, just working to pay for the next vacation. Financial freedom is the best.
If your direct managers are incompetent and feel threatened by top performers, they will try to push down top performers while pumping up low performers (who they don’t feel threatened).
in fact this is a successful strategy in a multinational corporation. Once you have developed your top performers there is a higher chance that one of them will replace you than you will move up.
Learned this the hard way. When you're entire project team gets promoted for work you trained them to do, and you find out you got skipped because of your bosses' agenda and conversations at the middle management layer that you had zero opportunity to advocate for yourself in... it's time to find a new boss who actually has your best interests in mind.
My former boss was so incompetent that no one worked for her liked her and I was the one that got in a bit more vocal about it....I've been asking for a promotion for years but did not happen (no budget, no such position and you need to do a great deal/substantial achievement in order to get there, blah blah). Not long ago, I then got laid off as they said due to org change, but I was not surprised why it got down to me.....later it turned out that they promoted my co-worker right after I left. So it does not matter how great you can do your job! If you don't see things are going your way, don't waste your time and just find somewhere that appreciate you....loyalty does not pay, and of course, hopefully you don't have a crazy boss.
Reason is insecurity. Had an interview once. Was asked where I saw myself in a few years time. I answered I'd be X doing X things. Interviewer said, "That's my job." The rest is history. 😂
Love your content. I do have a very important question that i believe many coaches dont take into account often enough. More often than not junior management or specialist lower level employees would communicate great ideas, strategic decision making leadership thoughts which very often never gets noticed because the reporting line takes that information and share to top level as if its their original thoughts and ideas which makes them shine and get promoted and the guy on the floor go unnoticed.
This keeps happening to me too. I’m about to look for another role because of lack of promotion despite performing at a lot higher level than the scope of my role, some of my ideas being taken and used with no credit given to me, and every year taking more and more tasks as my superiors advance in their roles and their workload being dumped on me.
I dont consider any of these points as traps. These are levels and skills you need to continuously pursue and develop during your career if you are ambitious. Moreover, good leadership should mentor you in the jourmey if they see the potential. The trap is staying in a work environment were no development support is given and moreover staying in toxic work environment and expecting to advance. Where ever you work if you dont advance or get a significant increase after demonstrating being a high potential for 2-3 years, grab your stuff and run.
1. Promotion might require Managing Director or VP level to approve both from the budget and individual performance perspective; if the managing director does not possess the proper leadership trait that promote the top performer but only promote those who can "talk BS with leadership and asking others to do the work while taking credit of the team work" then the so-called top performer is more likely to be "doubted" than to be considered. UNLESS, you APPLIED and get SELECTED to the next level position within the same team, so this way it does not require VP level approval and bypass them, while direct manger approval would do.
Excellent video! Extremely informative and helpful. I am experiencing precisely this scenario in my life and career. Extremely grateful for this information.
It's all about networking (mostly superficial), become visible, know about them and talk to them casually so that are comfortable with you and know you.
I tried that..but if ur boss doesnt feel like in the same page or has never given u a chance than its all just hot air…especially if your boss is young or the same age as you..u agree?? Bcos at the end of the day we all gotta eat right?? We all dont wanna lose the job…🤷🏻♂️
Attractive employees usually get promoted, usually beautiful and not married women get to peak positions, and not necessarily because of their knowledge or expertise, go figure, .. so, work out, look good, work hard maybe a door will open
The problem is when toxic people want you to stay in the trap box and confined you to tactical or implementation tasks and take over your ideas or works and just because you belongs to an organisation with an organigramme you have to shut your mouth and obey
I notice that of the +400 videos you've got on this channel, there's ... nothing on reading materials. Would you make some recommendations? For people that go through a dozen books per year, perhaps books on the most basic rules and principles we ought to know to succeed, and an advanced reading list for voracious readers (+100/year). I personally would like a list of reading materials on honing interpersonal skills if you have one. Thanks!
"give the company all of your skillset, document your processes and train you managers" = You will be getting replaced soon by new grads. Don't give 100% effort until it is necessary for you to come out and save the day, just give 70-80% effort on a daily basis and try not to do more than what your current and next position required. Until your work is well exposed, recognized, and appreciated by the team members and leaderships; then you will start the conversation on "What can I do to achieve the next level position and can you (direct manager) guide me to that level and salary."
Why would you not want to sharpen your skillset if you have the opportunity? If you feel you are paid less than markeylt value, do it anyway and look for a new job. You could look at it as betting on yourself and they get a bonus, or you could view it as avoiding them screwing you over so you don't use your skills. Long term I believe the former gives you more sense of agency and happiness.
I was just hired as a senior data analyst, and I’ll start there in two weeks. I want to grow there to leadership positions and I'm thinking about how to position myself at the beginning. I am expected to communicate at the implementation level because of my role. Will I be welcome to bring my strategic vision, talking about product, growth and customer journey, even though this is not my place?
Probably a VP level problem. I've been around below that but never saw or experience these traps. And I mean, the people I see getting promoted are those with loud voices in the company, whether they make sense or not. In short, a popularity poll. It does make sense to some degree since the managers and leadership can't possibly know each employee in a large organization so they pick someone they are more familar with. Still, I do hope they review the employee's performance first before promoting them
Academics and people under 30 years of FT corporate experience should not bring their naive ideas. It misguides the young professionals. Nobody wants your strategic ideas when you have a different goal and expectation to fulfil. It will probably annoy them
I noticed I was stuck in the first trap a few years ago and now I'm definitely at trap 2, given a lot of people rely on me for a lot of tactical tasks. I'm focused today on breaking out of trap 2 by leaning more into strategic communication. I've been pitching my vision for our products and so far, I feel it's been great for my team seeing me in a new light.
Should I just slack the ceo and cto directly with a strategic presentation and next steps? Lol I’m scared to talk to them but I’m drowning in work so I need professional services to change their strategy and have all the receipts to argue my point. What should I do?
Got tired of the corporate bs. Started my own business; lots of challenges, but life is great.
I am considering the same.
Well its the best move to be your own boss. I did for 15 yrs. It is much more stress, got the tax losses now, just working to pay for the next vacation. Financial freedom is the best.
My corporate job is funding my private foundation.

So true. Experiencing this now.
That’s a fact, my boss does it to me everyday

damn change your company at that point

1. Communication on a strategic level instead of the implementation level
2. Calibration from tactical to strategic
3. Comparison
3C! Pull the plug.
You will never get promoted if people above you want to keep you at your current position.
Or they even want to get rid of you because you outshine them.
"People don't quit their jobs, people quit their bosses"
I am fine with not getting promoted. Just give me more money

Good you've a new job at the role you want!! How did you explain at the new job?
Reason is insecurity. Had an interview once. Was asked where I saw myself in a few years time. I answered I'd be X doing X things.

You’re working so hard, you have inadequate time to prepare for interviews

Bingo
You made me realize how deep I was caught in the first trap. Thank you Dr. Lee!
It's all BS. Just do the bare minumum, get paid, go home. You want to progress, do job hopping.
100%
Agreed!

Content make sense tactically, getting promoted still has to do with what the upper mgmt has to gain by you moving up. What do you bring to the table.

Dr. Lee, most of the employees have the same challenge at the workplace. Hope these three revelations of traps will be helpful.

Same for the old ones if they are incompetent and feel threatened.
Why do you get into a position waiting to be promoted? Why don't you get into a position to decide who to be promoted?
you only get promoted if you’re friends with your managers. it’s nepotism all the way down. it’s not any more complicated than that
Very true. Nepo or being part of the clique. Being the longest in the team, doesn't mean you've earned the right to get promoted.
Great content. Thanks for sharing.

Dr Lee Rocks 😊
You’ll never get promoted or even keep your job if reverse discrimination has taken hold at your company.

What if you don't make enough money to give the company all of your skillset, document your processes and train you managers? What to do then?
