A bull snake, they can get up to 8 feet long. One of the old sayings is if there are bull snakes around then you won't see any rattlesnakes.
You must have missed all the Texas sandburs (goatheads) on the trail since you didn't comment about having to change a flat tire.
I was wondering if you would stay on the trail through the hills or if you would jump back to the highway. It is quite isolated through there.

I finally encountered a rattlesnake just west of Stuart NE. ( I’m certain because it rattled at me) never saw or found any goat heads in my tires. The mechanic at the Norfolk bike shop said the cooler wetter weather has slowed their growth do far.
I stayed on the trail except for the towns until after ONeill. I rode ONeill to Norfolk in one day for 80 miles. That had a closed section and I got off in a few areas because the surface was slowing me down too my much. The trail is basically flat. In some areas the surface got gravely which slowed me down. The highway is usually near with access roads every few miles so you can exit and re-enter without getting too far out of your wsy.

How beautiful the day was, and great weather! Could not see the snake well, but looked like a rat snake of some ilk.
