Bodycam Shows Carjacking Suspect Point Gun at Clark County Deputies Before They Shot Him

Salmon Creek, Washington - On April 13, 2024, at 10:38 a.m., Clark County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Deputies responded to a reported carjacking in Hazel Dell (9200 Block of NE 15th Avenue). The victim reported that two suspects, a male and a female, had stolen his van. The witness also stated that the male suspect was armed with a handgun. The suspects reportedly left the scene in the stolen van. At 10:54 a.m., CCSO Deputies were dispatched to a suspicious circumstance near Goodwill in Salmon Creek, located at 14300 NE 20th Avenue.
Witnesses stated that a male and female had attempted to carjack a vehicle with a person inside. Descriptions of the suspects near Goodwill matched the descriptions of the armed suspects in the Hazel Dell carjacking. Authorities have since identified the suspect as 41-year-old Benjamin Woods of Prineville, Ore. Deputies responded to the scene and set up a containment area to search for the suspects. Deputies located the stolen van from the Hazel Dell carjacking behind the American Legion at 14011 NE 20th Avenue. Deputies observed Woods enter the American Legion. Immediately as the deputies reach the bathroom vestibule, Woods can be seen emerging from the men's room with the K9 just ahead of him.
He appears to be holding a handgun pointed directly at the officers. Multiple deputies open fire, and Woods quickly drops to his knees, evidently having been shot several times. Behind him on the tile floor is the gun, a small revolver. Deputies eventually drag him out onto the floor and cut off his clothes to begin giving first aid. When an ambulance crew arrived, they pronounced Woods dead at the scene. According to CCSO, no officers or bystanders were injured in the shooting. No deputies were physically injured. Law enforcement searched the area using K9 and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) but were unable to locate the female suspect. She is currently outstanding. Four CCSO deputies are now on Critical Incident Leave, per standard protocol.

This is an example of why a high powered light can delay your enemy’s reaction time and accuracy. You could see the guy could have shot first but the sheer amount of lumens caused him to flinch and squint first. This is exactly what you want with a weapon light.
Interesting, I wondered why they have lights on their guns in daytime situations.

Once the dude pointed the gun at the officer in the parking lot the fight should have been on. Letting him run inside a heavily occupied building could have been a tragic mistake.

@@williampapadopoulos8145 I say, the perps times have expired and police have all the time in the world to decide their approach. They noticed this and that’s why they took their time and not rushed to resuscitate him.
@@williampapadopoulos8145 And why would the officer do that? For one, those wounds were clearly not survivable. You can tell that the perp was shot through the heart by the way he grabbed his chest. That's an immediate lethal heart attack that cannot be surgically repaired even if he had somehow fallen onto an operating table. And what if the suspect had HIV? It wasn't prudent to get close until there were 3-4 other guns trained on him in addition to two officers to go hands-on. Finally, cops are only legally required to render aid if the suspect is in custody. The suspect wasn't in custody. Allowing several minutes to pass as to deliberately allow the suspect to bleed out is a 100% legitimate and legal tactic when it comes to the application of deadly force. Low blood volume = less fight.

I remember getting into arguments with my CO in Iraq about me going in a room before my dog and then letting her clear the corners. ISIS had even taken to using dog chew toys, bones, and other things pups like tied to grenades and other explosives. Our TL's dog Rox was stabbed by an insurgent hiding in a closet with a 5 inch kitchen knife. Miraculously, the dog survived with only minor paralysis. Point of the story - sending a working dog into combat or unknown danger carries a very real risk of the animal dying.

Hazel Dell is unincorporated in the city of Vancouver and so the sheriffs dept does the policing. These guys are always on top of things fast with multiple units.

No he's just smart. He knew guy had a gun and was gonna end up getting shot if he tried attacking him. he was just pleading with the guy to please not be stupid. at least dude was cool enough to realize dog was no threat.
Dog wasn’t really sent then got called back, probably confused so didn’t go full attack. More the handlers fault really but it seemed a very difficult situation.

@@trevor759 He gave that command when they were entering a room with other people in it, and never directed the dog at the guy, so who was he commanding the dog to bite exactly? When they got through that room, he called the dog back. Going from the dog’s actions, it kinda knew who the handler was on about but not sure, so didn’t fully commit. Earlier in the video, you hear someone say release the dog but the handler said there were other people there, so didn’t want to release. The dog got to the guy twice and was constantly looking back at the handler for conformation but none came, just a recall.

When guns are out, get way away from the situation and take cover behind something solid like the engine of a car. You have no idea how that situation is going to erupt, where that guy might run, with gunfire following him. Those bystanders were way too casual.
