3D anatomy tutorial on the muscles of mastication, using the BioDigital Human anatomy browser (www.biodigitalh...). I am sorry for the length of this tutorial! I am working on making them shorter, but I will soon be posting a video which covers the muscles of mastication and facial expression more concisely so look out for that, if you find that this one is too long!

It would help a bit more if you elaborated on how the lateral and medial pterygoids influence the TMJ and their action on bringing the jaw back to neutral at the end phase of mastication.

I love this video. 11 minutes you can understand the muscle of mastication VERY clearly. It totally worths. Though he repeated the same idea again and again, I never find him boring, instead, he is telling us not to confuse the origin and insertion. I would recommend this vid to everyone i know.

Just for your benefit, there are many sources which indicate that the lateral pterygoid inserts both onto the condyle of the mandible, as well as the articular disk. Their belief is that the pterygoid is helping to anchor the disk to avoid any pathological dysfunction where it might pop anteriorly over the condyle (as a result, defeating its purpose within the joint). H

at 9th minute of the video you change the origin and insertion of Petrygoid muscles few times, I assume You mean Origination of the Petrygoid muscles are from Lateral Ptreygoid muscles Am I right? And the insertion of the lateral Pterygoid muscle is on Condylar mandible. Please help me with this confusing part of anatomy.
Besides, why clinically these two muscles only originate from Lateral Pterygoid muscle I mean what is the clinical importance of it. Why medical Pterygoid muscle does is not supposed to originate from Medial plate of Pterygoid process? what you happen if so?

    • @Notthetimeforit

Steven Hartshorn side to Side movement would just be the lateral and medial pterygoid.
      Masseter: jaw closure
Temporalis: jaw closure, protrusion and elevation.
Medial: protrude, elevate mandible and grinding.
Lateral: protruding, sliding and grinding (back and forth, side to side

Masseter does not protrude. Whoever has taught you that is incorrect. It can only elevate the mandible, nothing else. Protrusion of the mandible is produced initially by the lateral pterygoid for minor movements, and also medial pterygoid for larger protrusions.
