    Ever since I created the first version of this video a year ago I've been wanting to try it again with more water and better lighting / footage. This is a really fun project and when you first see the results, chances are your jaw will drop. The main thing to keep in mind for this project is that you need a camera that shoots 24 fps.
    The effect that you are seeing can't be seen with the naked eye. The effect only works through the camera. However, there is a version of the project you can do where the effect would be visible with the naked eye. For that project, you'd have to use a strobe light.
    For this project you'll need:
    A powered speaker
    Water source
    Soft rubber hose
    Tone generating software
    24 fps camera
    Tape.
    Run the rubber hose down past the speaker so that the hose touches the speaker. Leave about 1 or 2 inches of the hose hanging past the bottom of the speaker. Secure the hose to the speaker with tape or whatever works best for you. The goal is to make sure the hose is touching the actual speaker so that when the speaker produces sound (vibrates) it will vibrate the hose.
    Set up your camera and switch it to 24 fps. The higher the shutter speed the better the results. But also keep in the mind that the higher your shutter speed, the more light you need. Run an audio cable from your computer to the speaker. Set your tone generating software to 24hz and hit play.Turn on the water. Now look through the camera and watch the magic begin. If you want the water to look like it's moving backward set the
    frequency to 23hz. If you want to look like it's moving forward in slow motion set it to 25hz.
    Have fun!

      Dane Mutters Yeah, I'm fairly certain bill is right. After spending a few minutes searching, there's quite a bit to the eye and mind perceiving motion... • @9kcoolkid
      @9kcoolkid 3 года назад +1

      I think it's the way the water's moving inside the hose that makes it move. It doesn't have the space to create the patterns but is still reacting to the vibrations

    • @waylonk2453
      @waylonk2453 3 года назад

      I also noticed that. The hose should be moving 23-25 times per second, so the video appears to be slowed down (or the framerate of the camera lines up somewhat with that of the moving hose) for the shots where the hose is moving.

    • @the7thage576
      @the7thage576 3 года назад +2

      @@waylonk2453 the video, I believe has a low frame rate. So we see a funny pattern instead of way is actually happening similar to seeing through a spinning fan. You can tell because you can hardly see water falling. It’s an illusion.
      The spout was obviously in motion. The sound vibrated the spout, and what you see is the pattern of exit points from the hose.
      I thought it was a glitch in the matrix, but it turns out it’s just a camera trick

    • @gamilhammer
      @gamilhammer 10 лет назад +13

      It's not really fake, it's just a camera trick.
      It's the same camera effect as the wheels on a car looking like they are going backwards. The 24Hz sound wave causes the hose to move up and down 24 times per second. The camera captures a new frame 24 times per second so when the camera takes the next picture the hose has already gone up and down and is back in the same position it was for the last picture. you would get the same effect with 48Hz audio and any multiple of 24Hz.
      But, if you were to lower the audio to 12Hz, you would see a wave that alternates back and forth rapidly with each video frame as the camera would capture the hose on both the up and down of the hose movement.

      coolbeans1457 You're right. The frequency of the sound corresponds to the frame rate of the camera. In person, things would look much different. The water would still move, as it resonates with the sound, but it wouldn't produce this lovely spiral. It's sad, but true.

    Principle: Energy is transmitted through Seismic Waves (Mechanical Waves) which requires medium to travel. Here, The medium comprises of 2 fluids (Air + Water). Now, the frequency of the Waves used (in this case Sound frequency should be comparable to Activation frequency of the medium). So, the person who is operating tried different frequencies till he reaches a point where Sound Frequency and Medium's Activation Frequency interact to give meaningful shapes. Actually, same effect is observed in Air also. But, due to the limitation of our senses, We are not able to perceive it until water is used.

      I believe it is more simple than this. The water stream is activated by the water hose mechanical motion in this shape by mechanical coupling to speaker. The frames/sec of camera recording is critical to the “forward” and “reverse” perception we have. I guess you mean the air molecules are also being activated by the hose, which is true, but we don’t see that but of course can see it. Very cool

    It's not fake. To the naked eye, it would just look like a mess of water falling.
    However, the camera only records 24 frames per second. By setting the speaker to 24hz, it moves the water into a pattern that is exactly the same 24 times a second. When the camera opens its lens, the water is in the same pattern each time. By slowly speeding it up or slowing it down, you can make the water look like it's traveling up or down.
    It's the same concept as when you're watching a car's wheels spin and it starts to appear that it's spinning backwards. It's actually not. It's just spinning at the right speed for your eye to perceive it that way.

      this isnt anything to do with that, its merely the frame rate capability. when viewing a spinning wheel or airplane propeller, they can appear to be still, go forward, reverse, or even look bent based on 2 factors, how fast the image is captured and how quickly the display renders the image, i think it goes top left to bottom right? in the time it took for the image to be captured, the object rotated, giving a curvature or shift forward or backward, and is falsely rendered to the screen.
      a funny video i saw was of a helicopter which happened to have the same rpm of its blades as the frame rate of the camcorder, and every time the camcorder took another picture, the blades had done 1 full rotation. in every image the blades were in the same spot, so it was just flying around with what appeared to be stationary blades.

However, you can set it up in a darker area, using a strobe light matched to the speaker frequency, and then the stair step effect will be visible to the naked eye.

The goal is to have a larger duty cycle that will work at any frequency vs 1% duty cycle at a certain frequency which requires swapping the materials or magnification power.

      It's not really in reverse. The water is indeed falling downwards, the only thing going "up" is the phase shift of the wave created in the water stream. It's just as natural as the "forward" mode in which you saw what *looks* like water going down in slow motion, but is actually just the shape of the waveform changing in time.

      Andy Hoke It is a trick my inteligence most likely can not explain well enough for you to understand, but if the Ghz on the subwoofer is 24 and the frames per second on the camera is 24, the water will look like it's standing still in the air. if you were to see this in person you'd only see the water being pushed by the soundwaves created by the subwoofer, and would still be flowing as normal.

      Just a little typo AR,we have yet to produce sound in Ghz as far as I know. Just Hz and KHz. The lower the Hz the deeper the sound (like bass) and from there the sound can go high all the way up to about 22KHz (22000Hz) for our ears to stop hearing it. So no point going beyond KHz with sound from a human hearing standpoint. Our ears can only hear between 20Hz to 22Khz but it can vary slightly from person to person. (Now at 21 years old I can hear 22Khz but as I age that will reduce)

      the same question, seems more like the effect made for the tube vibration due to the speaker movement than direct effect on the water

    • @core2zero
      @core2zero 10 лет назад

      Kuisf Rund that's right, but the thing is that people watching the video seems to believe that is the sound is making the movement rigth in the water, when it is an effect caused by the movement of the tube because the sound makes it move, still awesome

    • @fashnek
      @fashnek 10 лет назад +3

      core2zero No, the sound doesn't make it move. The speaker, which is a vibrating object, makes it move. Anyway, it's not one or the other -- both the tube and the water are undergoing the same overall forces and effects. You can't separate the two in this case.

    • @briathomas2455
      @briathomas2455 10 лет назад +5

      It's irrelevant if the pipe is stable vs unstable. Think about it. If it was the effect of the pipe, there would've only been one wave and then the rest would've gone straight down, vs continuous waves all the way down.

    • @kxs14
      @kxs14 10 лет назад +2

      no sir, it is not. I am a physicist and let me know a bit more about the matter.. the vibrations og the pipe as you can see in the slow motion capture can easily change the expecting result.

      ThisIs MyName You can heal (listen to something uplifting and it can help your bodies health and immune system) and you can kill. The soviets (I think it was in the 50s) discovered a frequency range that made people sick, it was actually by accident. So the scientists wanted to find a way of magnifying the power that would take out massive numbers of people on the battle field.

    No way people are stupid enough to believe this. SOME of this is real. The rest of it is slowed down, cycled, reversed, or some combination.
    Also... ALL of the sound is applied after the fact. The sin waves that went down at gravity speed were real. The rest was creative doctoring.

Even ancient legends has it that sound had a finger in building the mayan temples on mountain tops. No one can disprove or prove this. But humans keep pushing what we thought can't be done. about and open mind really.

    the affect is on the tubing, not the water. vibration on the tubing. if you look closely, the tube is moving back and forth. if the tubing was taped down solidly or water dropped from the top of the speaker, would it do the same?

    • @jimmyci8773
      @jimmyci8773 10 лет назад

      DEBUNKED? I agree with you jack. I noticed it also. The speaker is moving the hose, not the sound waves.

    • @chefbelgium
      @chefbelgium 10 лет назад +7

      Moving the hose wouldn't produce the first effect. So it isn't debunked and still awesome lol

    • @BxPanda7
      @BxPanda7 10 лет назад

      Yeah because the hose can make the water look like it's going up... Are you stupid ? There's no debunking this it's just the sound waves...
      At certain frequencies you can even make water move in all kinds of directions and make it look like it's alive, but the speaker has to be beneath the water.

    • @fashnek
      @fashnek 10 лет назад

      If the tube were TRULY fixed in place, then no "sound" would be reaching the water. Your hypothetical situation doesn't make sense.

  • @charliehernandez4404
    @charliehernandez4404 10 лет назад +21

    Yes, what you see is real. However, this happens because of the sync between the frequency of the camera and the frequency of the sound wave. If you make this experiment at your home without a camera that is shooting at the same frames per second (fps) rate as the frequency of the sound wave you'll not see the same effect with your naked eye.
    The drops don't flow in a sinus form. There is a drop of water at the same place every 1/24 second due to the frequency of the wave sound. Each drop goes in a straight line, but the stream of water returns to the same position every 1/24. When looking at this at a frequency of 24 frames per sec, you see as if there is a stream that is "suspended" in air in a shape corresponding to the wave. If the water source is allowed to move then you get a "sinus wave", if you hold the water hose and change the flow strength at 24 Hz, you will see droplets "suspended" in air.

      ***** I think he's talking about the reverse effect. All the rest seems possible without a camera, or even a box. Just take a hose and swirl it around a bit. That's all that's really happening. Only your hand is replaced by a box.
