You are the David Attenborough of survival camping: an excellent communicator, teacher and filmmaker, with total respect for the natural environment and a great sense of theatre and fun. Love these videos, have learnt so much. Thank you.
Yeah especially at 16:14 - peak Attenborough
Great video! It took me back 40 years to when I used to hunt with a small group of friends. We each carried a small kit in case someone downed an animal and couldn't make it back to the main camp by night fall. We had what we needed to stay with the animal overnight and no one was worried. Back then we didn't have the fancy stuff available now like titanium pots, etc. Myself, most of my stuff fit into a one pound coffee tin with a wire bail. I always had a few bouillon cubes and a hand full of tea bags and sachets of sugar. A tin cup fit in my coffee tin. A lighter was in my pocket (no ferro rods in those days) and, as a backup in my tin I had wooden matches I had dipped in wax. I carried my tin in a haversack along with a few other items: a small 8 X 10 light nylon tarp; sash cord because we hadn't heard of paracord; always a slab of MacIntosh's toffee (when they still made slabs!); for water, I used an old 1 litre rectangular plastic vinegar bottle; a small flashlight; a compass and extra ammo. Either in my haversack or in a pocket I always had a can of sardines! I always wore a fixed blade knife on one side and a folding Buck 110 on the other, then I had a good pocket knife. I am a little knife crazy but also one of our guys had taken his rifle and gone out one morning to answer the call of nature. When he dropped his drawers he saw a moose, shot it but only wounded it. He trailed after it and, a long time later, found it down. He went to gut it and realised he had not put his knife on his belt when he got up that morning. He bush-wacked back to camp, got his knife and tried to return to the moose. Hours later he still couldn't find it; never did. Lesson learned.
Excuse the long-winded tale! I'm 75 and just had a pacemaker implanted 3 weeks ago. I'm pretty sure my days in the bush are going to be very limited but your video brought back some fond memories from long ago. You're doing a great job, Xander, and I get a vicarious pleasure watching everything you post.
The extra ammo is useful for signaling. The old rule is to fire three shots in the air, wait for a response, then fire three shots again, etc. Of course, eventually you're going to run out of arrows.
:-)
My daughter (5yo) and I love watching your videos! She thinks you're absolutely hilarious. Thank you for bringing laughter and knowledge to your videos. Love from Iowa, USA 🇺🇸
Check out The Steve Show, guys! Solo canoe, fish fry, attitude!❤❤❤❤
Love how you're demonstrating it doesn't take much gear to live/survive a night out. Even in cold weather. Have a friend who loves to day hike. She had a scary hike one time where she got off trail and was afraid she wouldn't make it back to the trailhead and would have to spend at least one night out. She didn't carry much with her expecting just routine day trips. She was so shaken she was telling me she was probably going to stop hiking which she loved. I encouraged her to put together some simple items to carry just for spending a night out if she ever had to. A couple of ways to start a fire, a poncho for weather or shelter, a whistle, paracord, a water bottle and a metal cup, water purification tablets, a couple of energy bars, a headlamp. Add whatever else you like, say a map of the area. Then go someplace you're familiar with, hike out a little way, not far, not so far you couldn't easily walk back to your vehicle even at night. Pick a good campsite and spend the night out with just those items. Do it just to show yourself you can. You'll learn from the experience, most importantly you'll learn about yourself. How to face your fear and anxiety, how to make a better shelter, how to learn that it may not be the most comfortable night ever but it will be rewarding. I also love how you show the most important item to have even if you don't keep it in your container kit. Your attitude. Stay calm, be prepared, keep thinking how to solve problems. Damp icy spruce bows? Simple dry them by the fire. Carry some tape to fix the tear you know will likely happen in the mylar or plastic. Practice these scenarios and your skills and confidence will grow. And if you ever are faced with a situation where you might have to rely on yourself and a few select items you'll already know you can do it. Love how you've done episodes using less and less or more simple gear. Very cool.
That’s really good advice for your friend, coming from a great friend it appears.
I hope she got back to it
It brings me joy when you thanked the trees for a comfy shelter. You have a wonderful soul, Xander! 🌿💚🌿☺️
This is my favourite type of Xander video. Minimal survival camping in uncomfortable conditions paired with delicious food.
When Xander uploads, I know my day is going to be 100x better! Love your content X, don't ever change bud... Huge fan here from the UK!
Masterful, as always! Damn impressive. Excellent survival skills, wonderful shelter, great looking dinner! Incredible editing and production quality is through the roof. Damn, Xander, this was good. Thanks for taking us along!
It’s the small tidbits of info like small strokes on the ferro rod and then a big one to light the smaller bits that make this channel worth watching completely though with no skipping.
Awesome video Xander. Would love to see you approach a hot coal bed shelter!
Best channel on RUclips. Xander man I thank you for the quality of these videos, show casing nature, outdoor skill, humor and your authenticity regarding sobriety. Rock on brother
You crush it every time! Make some stew once. Random, might be hard. Keep being that unicorn!
My wife wants to know if you're married. Not because she's interested or anything but because she wants to know how you can go 5 days in the woods without your wife wondering where you are.
Nah bro she lying to you, she intreseted😂😂
hmm... that sounds like the beginning of a xxx cuckold story
Maybe he is running away from the wife 😂
What a great way to close out this year! Xander, I hope you had a great Christmas with your family and that you have a very Happy New Year 🎉
I love the survival videos like this where you bring bare essentials especially when you do a catch and cook instead of bringing your own food!
Xander - I've been watching your videos for 3 years now. Every single time I watch them I never fail to be relaxed and calmed down, as well as reminded of the importance of being in nature and spending time exploring. I love your content - keep it up!
Talking to your own echo gave me real "Jim Carrey in the Grinch" vibes lol. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Xander! Thanks for all the awesome content!
Thank you so much Xander for all the videos in 2023, it literally got me through this year with a smile on my face. :) Keep up the good work and let me know if you ever wanna come over to Norway and test out the winter around the fjords. 👍
Straight outta dual survival and I'm here for it!
7 vs Wild 3 😂 using only what fits in a bottle
Great job with the shelter and the necessary repairs. I noticed that you did some hunting in a previous video. Glad to see the branching out, so to speak. Thank you for the fine content and the effort you put into making these videos. You have two fans in sunny Wisconsin.
I like your versatility of tools/shelters/fires. Oh and of course food. Thanks for keeping it interesting---even with the hunting! I am a new hunter too so I like to see other amateurs giving it a shot too and not being afraid of making mistakes.
It has been a great journey of healing and recovery. Being able to sneak away into the woods and snow in 30 minutes helps me reset from family/work life. Thanks for making these videos Xander.
Xander I've begun specifically checking your ch. each time I have time for viewing my favored content. Your audience greatly appreciates the detail you go into to explain all aspects of the methods employed. From knots to cooking ideas, and EVERYTHING in between, you keep us engaged and grateful for the details that, so many creators will, drop the ball on. This was a fun and educational video that both entertained and provided solid value. You're a Pro Host, well done, my friend. Blessings and safety be with you always. Very best your way with mega Thanks from Oregon. Mike.
That was perfect. Proper nailed it. Everything worked so well 👏👏 best channel on the tube.
Good morning! Perfect start to a cold Saturday.
Love that you gave yourself the canister challenge, I'd love to see a "glamping" video.....show off all your items, make it super comfy ❤ like - waay over the top !! Love your vids man, much love, from Australia 🇦🇺
With the winter coming you should build a quinzhee and make your little cozy room in it for couple of nights ! Did it with friends and it’s really nice. Good job Xander ❤️
Xander. Very cool vid-as always. I live in Minneapolis-MN, and we have NO SNOW right now, which is unheard of, so fun to see your survival activities. Keep up the great work.
Hi Xander. Well another great adventure in the books, along with your little bit of silliness. Excellant all the way thru. Great way to finish off the year. I'll leave you with this. Cold winds mingle in any nook and cranny they find as Winter spreads her cloak around herself and like a breath of fresh air breathes a sigh at the beauty of it all.. and this xander is your playground in all the seasons, you happily share with us. Happy New Year.
Made my Day, as allways! Just the best Outdoor Content in all of RUclips! Keep up the good Work and have a great New Year!🥳🥳 Greetings from Germany!✌⚫🔴🟡

Great video! Good to see the Siberian log lay work so well. I like what you’re doing with using different bushcraft survival techniques - more of that! Thanks for the good content 👍🏻
This was so entertaining and knowledgeable! Thank you for sharing and please keep staying healthy, happy, safe and warm! ❤😊
Great ideas in the winter bush! TY!
Brilliant video as always Xander
Wish we had snow like that in England
Love the winter videos but would love to see one where your combined tools your used this vid and last vid with a sleeping bag as well so it’s more comfortable for you and maybe you could increase the number of day you spend in the woods
Sweet! Loved that pocket chainsaw, never seen it before, and the fire setup. Adding that one to the mix.
Video suggestion since you asked: I’d love to see you spend a night or two with a traditional cowboy bedroll, and “frontier-like” tools. It would be a fun excuse for some bushcraft and maybe a history lesson 🙏
Awesome!!! Look forward to using your techniques
You never disappoint! Love coming along for your adventures and learning from you - get this man a million subscribers ASAP
I hope you and your family had a lovely Christmas Xander. Please please build a snow shelter Luke from the outdoor boys has done them in the past and I love watching the construction off them. Loved every second!! Very useful info!! Thanks!!
Always enjoy watching your videos and all the interesting methods you use to successfully camp outdoors with minimal tools. Happy New Year
Seems as though you had a great time, and yes, far easier to deal with snowy weather rather than a downpour of rain, Happy new Year Xander!
Just amazing! Thanks for the lesson, I always overpack not trusting my skills ....your videos helped me try out new bushcrafting and survival stuff and learn some new skills! Thank you!
Thanks for teaching us knots!
Definitely do another shelter and fire set up like that again that was so cool to see , I’ve started watching a few bushcraft type videos after work to wind down and the last week I’ve been watching your vids. Thanks for the content you’re an awesome guy 🤙🏽
Happy new year Xander! Thanks for another great video! All the best to you and your family in the new year.
Excellent choice on the Siberian log fire! Great video. Happy New Year!
Well done Xander, Happy New Year and Happy Trails !
Hey Xander! I've been binge watching your video's and truly enjoyed every one of them. I have CRPS in my legs/feet so I'm not able to do things that require a lot of walking around anymore. You make us feel like we're there with ya on these awesome adventures. You're so kind, funny and a joy to watch. Thanks for all you do, can't wait to see more. ((Hugs)) from Texas!
Happy new year Xander, thank you for all the wonderful videos this year. Love from Sweden

"If the spruce gets on fire you know it's dry.."
Great video! I prefer summer camping, but it's great to see you do these winter adventures. Any new trips with John coming up ? He is busy enjoying married life, but maybe have some time for you as well.. 😋
Your videos are great and your sense of humor makes them even better. Thanks for making them. Happy 2024!
Brilliant! My 7 y old daughter reminds me of bringing these two blankets in my backpack when going hiking! Really enjoyed it! Thank you!
I love those winter videos while I´m comfortably sitting in my warm home during night shifts. Thanks a lot, Xander!
@Xander Budnick I love the variety in your videos. In this one, you use a survival kit. Perhaps, along with adding first aid and chocolate, you might consider staple foods like beans or rice. It's not fancy, but in a real winter survival situation, what would someone truly have stashed away in their kit?
Always like the vid before I watch because I fall asleep before the end 😂.. Thanks for another chill night watch
Merry Christmas to you and your family! I really enjoyed the super shelter videos, maybe a shelter using bark as a coverage or a snow shelter. I'd like to see you and John do a hot tent fishing video, maybe some ice-fishing.
Happy New Years Xander!
Another great vid Xander, thanks for sharing!
Fun video, thanks for sharing! Great editing as usual too.
I'd love to see some winter camping/ice fishing videos.
Love the moment of madness at 12:29 anytime who’s spent time alone in the woods a lot knows the cave man comes out once in a while..especially at night 😂 🙌
Thoroughly enjoyed the video, as usual!! Liked the angle of using the survival kit, great idea!! I think I'm going to be adding the saw to my bush bugout bag though!! Thanks fornthe video Xander, keep doing what you do!!
Amazing video as always! Great quality, entertainment and humour
Excellent video! Thanks.
Great episode, love the new techniques. Good to know on some of these survival tips
Finally a video, love the winter videos! It would be fun to see more hunting survival videos.
Happy New Year Xan!
Keep loking up...
Great video! Thanks for making them!
Thank you! Great video
Once again so effin' funny! Thanks Xander, glad you didn't freeze 😄
Awesome adventure Xander, still can't believe how warm it gets in that shelter. Nice job! Looking forward to your next video, maybe Gustavo makes an appearance, or better yet, he does a full video and Xander makes an appearance??
Howdy @Xander Budnick 🤠
I showed my dad your channel many months ago and now he’s wanting to camp more. He used to camp all the time whenever he could, but since he got his new job he doesn’t have much time. We are going on a trip in a month finally all thanks to you! It may be a long shot, but he would love to camp with you😂 I would too but he’s the survivalist in the family. Lmk if your game🤙🏼
Love your videos! Definitely getting myself a pocket chain saw - what a cool item! Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year!
O.M.G. Almost 30 minute video. Happy New Year, Xander and to all your subscribers.
Happy Holidays Xander!

Great channel. I just found it last night. Just great content! I love going out and doing survival camping! Way to do it right 👍
Thank you very much for the videos Xander. It’s been helping very much with some mental stuff lately. Keep up the good work
This was great, You were comfortable you were fed and you had a good time. I remember when you slept between 2 big piles of burning logs. And that looked cold, but this is a great idea and something everybody can just carry in their car to have an emergencies. So fun. Be blessed happy new year❤
i am pregnant. He is the father
great video as always xander! I love the idea of canister homes
