    Hi Peter,
    Thank you for the tutorial. For MARI you don't need to preconvert linear images to work in ACEScg, just pick Utility - Linear - sRGB while importing. MARI handles conversion automatically, same as Arnold inside Maya

    • @MeshmenStudio
      @MeshmenStudio  4 года назад

      yes that is correct, But you still need to know what flavour of linear the image have encoded to set it accordingly, as the default rule if a exr would be to assume its in acescg colspace

      More hands on Mari and renderman will be covered in part 2 by the way.

    • @klesov

      Yeah, unfortunately there is no automatic magic way to make software "guess" which Linear space was used on an image. And for manual conversion in Nuke - you also need to know input color space.
      For most of the linear images though, there still will be "Linear sRGB" input. So you DON'T NEED to preconvert them for using in MARI with ACES.
      Same goes for Roughness, Normal etc - just pick input color space as "Utility - RAW"

      ohh thanks. its such a hard topic to explain, and sometimes really confusing. I will make a few additional more focusing on hands on using mari , renderman to demo some of the principles in a less clinical way

    Hey meshmen thanks for the video
    I have some problem that my aces setup is active for all dcc,
    how to setup aces only for renderman ?

    • @MeshmenStudio
      @MeshmenStudio  4 года назад +1

      Ok so ocio environment variable is a global variable, if you want to control it on a per program basis i belive making a, I think its called bat file per program defining what variable to use might be worth investigating. Im not a system expert, so i have limited experience in that field.

  • @jeanbultingaire9026

    Hi, so you only use Aces from MARI for maya and nuke ?
    You change your variable both times, what the point to download OCIO if we have MARI ?

    • @MeshmenStudio
      @MeshmenStudio  4 года назад +1

      Hi I use aces for maya , nuke mari, renderman, primarily and on and off also davinci resolve. The point is the one you have in mari will not be picked up by maya, Renderman for maya needs a OCIO profile set for the renderview tool to have the proper input colorspace to be able to display the luts correctly.

    • @jeanbultingaire9026
      @jeanbultingaire9026 4 года назад

      Damn, It isn't a piece of cake. So you have to switch variable each time you go and back between Mari/maya/nuke ?
      I honestly don't understand what variables are. Quite a mystery to me.
      Correct me if i'm wrong. The OCIO variable allow maya to get mari aces ?

    • @MeshmenStudio
      @MeshmenStudio  4 года назад +1

      No the mari one with mari roles works for my needs. The mari roles is specific to mari. Its a way to tell mari if a image is in a sRGB colorspace it should apply the correct rule. Using a default ocio profile this rule is not defined

    Hi peter. I am trying to learn renderman but i am stuck at creating realistic material with texture. For example : i have downloaded a iron man model free from Internet, it comes with a diffuse, normal and Specular map. When i apply pxrSurface shader to object and put the values of iron material in physical mode, it looks really good metallic object. But main problem comes when adding the textures. Suddenly the textures behave very weird. The results were crappy. Please make a tutorial on texturing and shading realistic material to object in physical mode for getting accuracy.

    • @MeshmenStudio
      @MeshmenStudio  4 года назад

      ok so you say you use physical spec in mari shader but when you render it looks crap, One thing that could be involved , if you use IOR values and export them out as textures, the tetxures need to be in at least 16bit and float as well as txconvert also needs to be set to at least half precision or you will clamp values at the index of refraction will not work. But yes I will make the last episode of my lets get physical for renderman . have you checked the lets get physical episodes?

      you can uncoment the OCIO profile in the env variables and the next time you open mari you will be asked to reset or remap your colorspace and I usually use remap

    Hey! Any reason why renderman is your renderer of choice compared to let’s say Arnold or Vray? I’m looking for the most photo realistic renders and your stuff is awesome!

    • @MeshmenStudio

      I guess im used to it and have been using it for a long time, most renderer today can probably create similar result. Back in the day when i started to use it , it was heavily used cause of its pipeline capabilities

    hi man! Thanks for the video. Can you tell me what's the best and quickest way to convert textures files to .tex with ACES baked in? In Arnold I just can run batch file with one line of code and it works. How about Renderman? I really don't want to put all my textures through Mari to do that.

      @@MeshmenStudio I tried with Amir software for conversion but it is not working unless I compile ocio converter for windows myself. That's something I really want to aviod. Linux has easy solution for that. Maketx from solid angle has forced --oiio into their executable and can't be replaced by --prman. I am out of ideas.

    Is it normal that a pre-converted HDRI image (linear-srgb to acescg) appears really dark when used in a pxrdomelight? How do you correct this?

    • @MeshmenStudio
      @MeshmenStudio  4 года назад

      I guess it depends on how the hdr was created. sometimes the hdr needs an exposure and this is usually exposed to a decent exposure when in a pipline. However if its created in hdr merge program you mighht have a lower exposure set. Take it into nuke or someting similar end set exposure
