  • I did the circuit hike on September 29, 2023. Started at 7:30am and back in the parking lot at 5:30pm. (I took lots of pics and video) There are about 3 places along the way where you think you are at the top…I’ve got bad news for you, you’re nowhere near the top. Keep walking!
    My recommendations:
    1) Don't hike if it's gonna be over 70 degrees for the high. I would say in the 50-60's is best. You will sweat like a pig.
    2) Bring at least 4 bottles of water with you...preferably 6.
    3) Don't bring anything with you like a heavy tripod in one hand and a gimbal in the other. (me) Both hands need to be empty so you can hoist yourself over rocks! Actually I'd recommend wearing some type of gloves. Make your backpack as light as possible.

No way I'm sitting on a 45 degree incline overlooking a cliff. And somebody carved steps there, ok...

I hiked up Old Rag several times as a kid and young teenager with my uncle, but I never got the impression of it being challenging. Maybe I just didn't know any better.

Yeah, it wasn’t too bad for me the first time I did it in my 20’s. Much more difficult in my 50’s. Although, bringing all the camera gear probably is the main reason for that. Also, both times I’ve done it, the actual hardest part was almost dying of thirst. If I ever do it again I will bring plenty of water.

doing this hike with my friend in a few weeks how early did you get to the mountain and how long does it take to get to the summit?

I got there at 7am sharp. Started hiking up it at 7:30am. I got to the top around noon, however I stopped along the way to take pics and video and to rest here and there as I had a heavy backpack and tripod to lug of the mountain. It sorta depends on your physical ability, etc. I would estimate 3-3 1/2 hours to get to the top for the average person that is not stopping a lot. Probably could be done in 2 1/2 for people that hike all the time. 5 hours for people in my situation.
