I was an assistant coach for Roberto when he was 11 years old in Pop Warner, he was kicking 30 yarders no problem. Really sucks his pro career didn’t work out. Everyone actually thought his brother would be even better but he had a rough time at FSU from the start
A kicker who had one bad year yet was able to get another shot at the NFL and is now a pro bowler was Younghoe Koon of the falcons. Like you said, some can rise above the adversity and others will just sink down
I think the pressure of having to live up to his rep ended it for him...Pat McAfee says all the time that kicking is about confidence i think he started to doubt himself when he started to struggle and it got into his mental state and he was never able to recover
@@bdach88 he definitely lived up to the hype. I was even scratching my head at that pick but now when you look back on it that was one of the rare and few first round picks that the raiders got right and that was a kicker lmao 😂. Sorry but I had to say it
He runs his own kicking camp with his brother Ricky both are very humble and they know their stuff I’ve been to their camps twice and have Ricky’s personal number both very kind and humble
It’s truly sad I remember watching this guy in hard knocks when they were airing the buccaneers that one summer and I just felt sorry for him the whole time. I hope he can another chance perhaps not the nfl but maybe other leagues like the cfl or the xfl
I agree that a kicker is the most stressful job in sports. You don't get to get into the flow of a game, the kick is either good or it's not and the task is equally difficult regardless of how good or bad the other team is. You sit on the sideline, go do your one play and go sit down for what could be 10 minutes or an hour for your next play if you even get another chance. Nice video!
Overthinking it lmao nfl kickers get paid millions to kick a ball.. that’s it, this guy was amazing in college which doesn’t matter and asscheeks in nfl which matter$ …end of story
Hey Matt, have you thought about making a podcast so that you can go way more in depth with these stories? And another idea is talking about some baseball players! Just some ideas, but keep up the great work and the grind man!❤️
Yea that's the thing of why he makes short clips. Imagine him trying to stretch this topic for a hour.. Now if he had someone to debate or feed off of then yes it would be interesting..
The guy got a good enough payday kicking footballs that he has been able to play a ton of golf and start his own business for kids. I would say he is doing just fine and a whole lot better than the vast majority of people watching this vid. Still sucks that he went from the best ever in college to out of the NFL in just a couple years, but he isn’t the first and won’t be the last. Just keep working hard and don’t blow your money like so many of them do these days and he’ll be just fine long term. Good luck Roberto, I wish the best for you!!
Yeah I don’t see that happening. He’s a great kicker but will go in the late rounds. He’s definitely gonna have a great NFL career like his fellow alma mater Justin Tucker but he’s not going in the first round lol 😂
His 4 year contract probably wasn't fully guaranteed. I wouldn't be surprised if he did suffer from the yips, Mike Vanderjagt of the Colts is believed to have suffered from the yips after missing a FG in the 2005 AFC divisional playoffs
Most of it was guaranteed. He probably got a little over 2.5 million of it. But still he could have been Justin Tucker kicker rich but blew it badly. I even thought that he was the next big thing
@@leo29hornsfan His guaranteed money was only about 1.6 million over a four year contract over 4 million. It's risky to draft a kicker in the second round but border line insane to offer him a 4 year deal that's guaranteed
The man never had a pressure kick in college. Most of his kicks were when Florida State was up 35 points. Despite what people think he never had a huge leg, although he was very accurate on shorter kicks. The second thing that almost no one knows or even talks about is that after his last year at FSU he changed his steps . If you watch his at FSU he was a very hip and groin driven kicker. He was very wide and approached the ball at steep angle with a very violent swing that brought his plant foot down field. He changed to being more narrow, given that he probably took 25,000 kicks with his old technique you don’t simply change without issues. Show video of FSU vs Tampa bay and watch how he looks like a completely different kicker technique wise.
Matt is a Bama fan. It has been about 40 years since they had a good kicker. Bama has the ability to get a great kicker recruit. Something happens when he gets to Tuscaloosa.
I got the yips for a brief period of time while golfing. I went through a stretch of a few months where I couldn't tee off with a driver at all. Thankfully its common enough of a problem to to have tips and routines to overcome that type of yips.
Look up Steve Blass disease for the origin of the "yips". He was a world class pitcher in the 60's and 70's leading his team to a World Series win in 1971, and then he suddenly and literally forgot how to pitch. I suspect it's more of a mental issue then a mechanical one, but when it happens to a great athlete, it's mystifying. Thanks Matt for the great story. Love your channel and content 💯💯💯
Felt bad for him to be honest. He had a great story on Bleacher Report. Failing at something you were fashioned to do is an incredibly hard fact to face.
That would piss me off to hear a player that has his job it's important but to say "I rather miss here at a major college football program than the NFL. I only played in Jr high and high school but my last game ended in the playoffs by 2 points with a last sec kick in field goal range.
No kicker should ever be a 2nd round pick. Im surprised he was let go so fast tho after being selected so early. The pressure in the NFL is the reason no kicker should be drafted because no one knows how they will respond once they get that deal and only 32 spots in the world
I know how to get rid of the "Yips". It is so simple you could do it in one practice session. For a kicker you have him practice what he is trying not to do. He can already kick field goals and he can do it so easy there is very little challenge. Remember these guys are competitors but when they become so... good they will unknowingly create new challenges. Have a kicker practice missing field goals after a while he will start kicking them perfectly thru the uprights. Now as a coach get on his ass for not practicing properly. "But coach I can't help it!!!" Now a good coach will just walk away. The kicker will now realize (reflect) how he got himself in this confusion. You can do this with basketball, baseball etc etc.
Phil, very interesting comment. I coached 25 years of high school basketball with an emphasis on skill development. I can see where intentionally missing a skill challenge can make it easier to REAPPLY the necessary elements it takes to be successful. It wipes the slate clean for you psychologically and allows you to focus AGAIN on the mechanical and timing aspects of what had already been ingrained into your nervous system through countless successful repetitions in the past. Very interesting. Thanks!
I'd have to look deeper into the numbers. What was making his numbers go down every year? What was the difference between the ones he was hitting and the ones he was missing?
What happens when you lose three shots at a title from a missed kick....you get Sebastian Janikowski...Graham Gano...Roberto and Ricky Aguayo...Dustin Hopkins...FSU has had some of the best kickers in college football since the wide rights
Gotta think about where the oline was heading after 12 and 13 Look at the decent QBs thatve been pummeled by that issue Still, 100percent extra points in 3 years is good.
Reminds me of Simone Biles, sometimes an internal mechanism that makes an athlete great just.. stops working. Losing something like muscle memory even just a little can be the difference maker
As far as being the place kicker goes, I would disagree. I didn't say anything about special teams in general. (obviously the talent and competition would be increased there) As a place kicker its such a repetitious act where those other variables don't come into play.
