The Blackhawk apparently did NOT have its transponder on, and was designated as a “PAT” (Priority Air Transport) which means that there was a very high ranking Military Official on board the helicopter. It is unknown how many were on board.
@ yup, we now know that it was on a annual proficiency training flight and there were 3 aboard. Very early information indicated it might have been a PAT flight since transponders were off.
Have spotted from this location a few times, most recently a few months ago, and have been following this story all evening. Hits close to home for sure.
Army helo screwed up and crossed the final approach path. Probably not talking to ATC, otherwise they would have directed him away from there. They will change communication protocol after this.
@@kendallevans4079 yes, it was. And then instead of pushing the nose slightly downwards to prevent a stall the fatigued pilot thought pulling up would stop the stall, making it worse and crashing into Buffalo
This is such a tight air restricted zone...it is micro-monitored by the ATC and other surveillance technology ... unprecedented accident..... seems a bit of illusory right now.
Why are all the aviation channels reporting incorrectly that the CRJ hit the helicopter when it was the other way around. You can clearly see in the footage what happened. I'm honestly disappointed in you for misreporting this.
For those going to ask about TCAS, TCAS does not give an RA below 1000ft, only a TA. Was there a TA? We don’t know yet. Being a military helicopter it may not have TCAS. It also seems as per FR24 the helicopter was not fitted with ADS-B
@ well being tower controllers they don’t stare at their radar screens all the time they’re also looking outside. It’s dark and Blackhawk may have been harder to see depending on lights in background and moving slower than jet

The past 30 days have been rough for crashes and incidents. First a Koreal 737 crashed and exploded after crashing into a brick wall during a belly landing, then a day ago or so a Korean A321 burst into flames while taxing for take off, all passengers and crew successful evacuated, then today a USAF F-35 basically fell out of the sky, pilot safely ejected and now this.........
This is awful and heartbreaking. It brings back memories for me when a Florida Air fligh went into the Potomac on January 13, 1982. This was the result of failure to engage the engine anti-ice system, along with snow accumulation on the wings, and the failure to RTO. The plane clipped the 14th Street Bridge and went into the Potomac. It wad awful. 5 survivors out of 79 souls on board.
Crazy to think that this flight passed me on descent no joke I live in the area when it was descending im in that line after the turn it does above Springfield
This is terrible news out of DC. Prayers for all involved. It seems bizarre that I was watching Air Disasters earlier today on the Smithsonian Channel.
I found out as I was leaving my own airport job tonight (at another airport) and I was waiting for you to make your announcement. Thanks, mate. I'm so rattled, I can't think of anything else. I hope there are survivors.
I will say this, with how busy that airport is a very tragic situation could have been a lot worse if it was a bigger plane. Still doesn’t change how tragic this situation is tho
TCAS doesn’t give an RA below 1000ft (so you don’t descent into the ground) and the helicopter didn’t have ADS-B, and may not have TCAS so not sure if that may have contributed
Probably had there night vision goggles on at night and couldn't see a thing some body in the military better have a good answer why they have to do night training around a busy airport sounds stupid sounds like a accident waiting to happen
So this was an "accident"? The video shows the Helo was on a direct path to the target from a ways out. Iow, there's no chance it didn't have a visual on the plane and could have/should have avoided. Even ATC, told the helo to get out of the planes way. Wonder who's on the airplane manifest that was coming to DC? 🤔
Seriously? You’re now claiming with no evidence the US Army intentionally flew a helicopter into a commercial airliner after 67 people have died? They were told to stay behind the aircraft, we don’t know they mistook the departing aircraft for that one. Just because this happened in USA doesn’t mean it cannot happen. Accidents happen, that includes yourself

The headlines should read Military Blackhawk Helicopter Broadsides CRJ 700, 60+ dead...
F those editors. The passenger plane cant exactly avoid a heli, much less in a landing event.
Military will get a pass, as they always do in the name of always being ready for the commie invasion!

I recently visited all the monuments of our nation and saw many flights landing at DCA. Very unfortunate to see this just 26 days later.
Absolutely tragic, my hearts go out to everyone. Thank you for the update DJ.

I just said that too.... something not adding up
Thats what the footage looks like. Also they were not on same frequency as DCA air traffic control.
there IS a Military base across the river from Reagan Airport
@ Theres several in the area.
@ this one i believe is an Army base or something that's like directly across the river, ik it's not Andrews AFB
You got this out very fast
That's what she said! 😂😂😂
Let us not mistake tragedy for stupidity. The military have a lot to answer for here.
This is heartbreaking. The last fatal crash on this magnitude in the USA was Colgan Air over Buffalo...
Yes that happened back in 2009 smh 🤦🏽♂️
Both two entirely avoidable accidents caused by blatant human error. Both involved Bombardier planes, but not the Bombardiers’ fault at all.

Prayers for those now in the hospital, in the water, and their families. 🙏
I used to work at DCA airport and I have always thought something like this would happen on day with the amount of traffic they squeeze through there.

This is like the earliest, I'm hearing this story.
I made a post about the crash about an hour and a half ago on Twitter. At the time, there was no news articles about it.
I saw this CRJ on flightradar and didn't know what was happening.

I remember that. News photos of them pulling survivors out of that freezing water.
*Both Aircraft would've had Transponders Pinging*
*Why didn't Air Traffic Control quickly identify the 2 Aircraft on a Collision Course?*
They did ask the helicopter to pass behind the plane, so they did pick them up
Thanks for this Dj!!

There were 5 crashes yesterday. Out of the 92 involved, only 2 survived

The military is 100% at fault here. The CRJ was exactly where it was supposed to be. The helicopter wasn't.
