So Long Marianne
Words & Music by Leonard Cohen
Come over to the window, my little darling
I'd like to try to read your palm
I used to think I was some kind of Gypsy boy
Before I let you take me home
Now so long, Marianne
It's time that we began to laugh
And cry and cry and laugh about it all again
Well, you know that I love to live with you
But you make me forget so very much
I forget to pray for the angels
And then the angels forget to pray for us
Now so long, Marianne
It's time that we began to laugh
And cry and cry and laugh about it all again
We met when we were almost young
Deep in the green lilac park
You held on to me like I was a crucifix
As we went kneeling through the dark
Oh, so long, Marianne
It's time that we began to laugh
And cry and cry and laugh about it all again
Your letters, they all say that you're beside me now
Then why do I feel alone?
I'm standing on a ledge and your fine spider web
Is fastening my ankle to a stone
Now so long, Marianne
It's time that we began to laugh
And cry and cry and laugh about it all again
For now I need your hidden loveI
'm cold as a new razorblade
You left when I told you I was curious
I never said that I was brave
Oh, so long, Marianne
It's time that we began to laugh
And cry and cry and laugh about it all again
Oh, you are really such a pretty one
I see you've gone and changed your name again
And just when I climbed this whole mountainside
To wash my eyelids in the rain
Oh, so long, Marianne
It's time that we began to laugh
And cry and cry and laugh about it all again Видеоклипы
It's funny how cohen can make you happy and sad at the same time.
I interviewed Courtney Barnett in a festival at Buenos Aires, three days after Leonard Cohen past away. I asked her which were her thoughts over him and she told me this: "It's funny, because until last year I had never reached Leonard Cohen, but lately I was getting into his music a lot. We heard the news the other night, after the show in Lima. It is very sad, but he was preparing for his death, and it is very pleasant that such a spiritual man and such a good composer has connected in this way with themes such as mortality. "
Locooo cuanta envidia sana te tengo de que la hayas podido conocer y hablarle!
@madarichards Damn who hurt you?
I think that's awesome and thanks. Ignore unstable pants down there, jeezuz!
@@chrismitchell9631 haha thanks man. Yes, a lot of people are really fucked up.
Hola, amigo. Qué bueno que compartas eso por acá.
This song came to me on Spotify a few hours after my dog passed away. We'd been together since I was three years old (14 years) and it was an absolutely devistating experience. This song and whole album really helped me through that period.
Forgegt about that!
Man this is probably my favorite Leonard Cohen song. I love her rendition of it.
"We met when we were almost young." It's that line that always gets me for some reason.
For me it's "I never said that I was brave"
I made the mistake of listening to this right before work and now I have to sit in my car for a minute. She’s such a beautiful artist.
such a shame you missed three minutes of work... lol
Same and then everyone asked me what happened and if I'm ok
Any species that can produce a Courtney Barnett can't be ALL bad.
Courtney made me a believer again.
Only God could create such a perfect human being.
Humans rock.
Or a man so beautifully broken as Leonard Cohen.
This on par with all the classic unpluggeds. Amazing.
Well, my RUclips algorithm is working just fine with this here little gem.
I wonder if one day people will, when wondering, 'who am I?' will ask 'who is my algorithm?'
The passion in this gem has been restored! I usually go to Courtney Barnett to rock out, but here she brought tears, Cohen would be proud.
It’s nice to hear her sing more melodies than the other past songs. I love her music but this this is priceless. Something different and emotion and more tones and singing
Anytime Courtney and Bones sing together is just magic. Add in a Cohen song and it takes it up six more levels.
I’ve came back to this song more times than any other. Greats realise greats.
“You left when I told you I was curious, I never said that I was brave” says so much with so little
One of my all time favourite covers, two incredible talents merging
She regularly improves songs she covers, and the only reason this one's a dead heat is because you can't improve on Leonard. But this is absolutely tectonic-shifting. It builds and builds in its emotion, and by 5:06 I'm ready completely to lose it. I think she is saying goodbye to Jen here (and also in "Play It on Repeat" from the same night)--one reason Courtney's covers are always so true and wonderful is because she makes them her own. Then when you're done listening to a few of her covers, you go back to listening to her original songs, and you just sit there stunned and in love all over again. Like Neil Young, Courtney is an endless journey--and where will she go next?
still one of the best covers of any song i've heard. the way courtney can convey certain subtleties in her voice's breaks and imperfections.... just brilliant, always.
Glorious. What a fabulous set. I've missed MTV Unplugged. I often stopped to wonder where it went & now I know where it went: to Melbourne!
#CourtneyBarnett
This legitimately caused a single tear to roll out from my eye.
Thank you, Courtney; thank you, Cohen; thank you, Milk! Records; thank you, MTV; thank you, Australia
only one? it got me bawling my eyes out
Barnett singing Cohen. Doesn’t get much better than that!
@madarichards what a pussball
I've fallen in love with Courtney's music and deadpan singing style. Her voice pierces right in ❤
I also love Cohen so this performance is just bliss to me ❤
My mate played this for me because Marianne is my mother’s name. Been thankful for it ever since. So warm and tender.
a musician at the top of her game
Rare to hear such a moving and well-done cover. Bought CD as soon as I heard this song. (And I never buy CDs anymore).
Her songs always send me into a fit of nostalgia...
the band brought it together nicely.
This song makes me so sad yet smile, melancholy at its best, Courtney you smash this cover!!!
I had no idea MTV still did things like this. Kudos to the Oz MTV producers and whoever else made this happen.
She make every lyric feels so relatable
WOW - Courtney - whats this? You can make what you want - you rock also an unplugged show. Goosebumps feeling (in German: Gänsehautfeeling) - thanks very much Courtney (also to MTV) - only the real ones can be unplugged!
Players only love you when they're playin' -- hey ,we take what we can get !! Respect for this talent.
I keep listening and crying ugh... ow
This tune is more than just a tune. This is a pure class moment that happened one time and will never happen again. So long Marian.
This is such a good cover, Courtney barnett is fabulous
love this song and you make it great
Gorgeous! absolutely lovable version
I love this beyond words
I'm gonna cryyyyy
Thank you Courtney, god bless.
Perfect for vibin' jamming in the night❤️
Beautiful~
What a fantastic performance of this song. Love this band so much
Yeah Baby! Play it again CB.
The bass player did a great job. That person is Bones Sloane.
Which is like the coolest bassist name ever
Excellent ! Thanks !
Good for you Courtney. You've got your absolutely individual way of doing this song.
Ufff Que Hermoso se escucha 👌Sos muy genial !!! ❤
This is great cover of a great song.
More and more Courtney covers, please! This is really well done.
Well that was perfect - wow
gracias courtney
SO GOOD❤
Probably the best underrated live performance
what a beautiful cover!
Magic.
Hermosa
what a beautiful piece ❤
Perfection.
amazing
The story about Marianne and Leonard and their life in Hydra is actually a beautiful love story. The fact that Marianne was from Norway, which I am too, gives it a extra dimension for me. Anyhow, one of my fav Cohen songs and Courtney did a great job covering it.
es muy lindo!
Love this...honest Aussie
MATE ! What a mullet !! Onya Courto. Great cover 😁
my god, hands down the best cohen cover I've ever heard.
Starts slow ... and gradually builds to something truly magical. Thank you so much. Great job!!!! Whoo hoo!!! Happy Saturday from Albany, NY.
🖤
I think this is a great song I recommend it highly
Your bloody good put me in a good state of unwind after staying up to watch the JJJ hottest 100 on RAGE super cool you are Barnett
As I enjoy all she does I hope she does more of this instead. I think she’s make more waves positively publicly. This is it. This will really be big.
sí claro que sí Courtney
CB covering LC! Yea. Hell yea
💙💙💙
Great
❤❤
So. Damn. Good.
Her haircut is saying 1987, but the LCD screens and video res is sayin 2016
Such a very very beautiful version, it's Courtney's rythym but it still keeps Leonard's scent
Underrated
What a great cover of the Leonard Cohen song.
Sounds pretty interesting. The green jacket is a winner & I'm glad to see full length two-tone long sleeve T's again
Clicando no joinha antes de entrar o vocal...não tem erro.
her hair is really cool
At first it's like, I dunno, maybe this isn't a very good idea to rent such a classic. Then it slowly builds into her own possession with an extra level of grit and emotion, and you realize it wasn't such a bad idea after all.
Love the way Courtney pronounces laugh
sounds like loaf
What wonderful Homage to the Man Himself
So powerful! I play it second time in two days, here in Prague. Thanx. :-)
Wowowowowkw
Aussie Bob Dylan? Fark, I love Courtney!
Shoot! I just realized she’s singing beautiful spiritually.
She will bring just as much as Brandi Carlisle to light.
Maybe they’ll duo one day.
Beautiful courtney.
Thank you
Damn - I bet if Cohen had chosen someone to cover this song, you would have been the one and only chosen one! Thanks!
She has a hard time hitting that low "again."
Funny I kinda feel the same way. Never my favorite Cohen song. But her delivery with ironic detachment that is so her makes me like the song a lot more.
😭
Miglior cover di Leonard Cohen che abbia mai sentito.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned anything about Courtney's divorce here, but she seems to be addressing 'So Long, Marianne' to Jen Cloher, her now ex-wife.
@T P where did you hear about this?
👍
Grab a bandana before listening. this is exquisite.
Holy Fuck!!! This is incredible. I'm sure Leonard Cohen would approve.
Anyone know what brand/model acoustic guitar she is playing? Thanks in advance.
I think it's a Maton
@@bryanisernhagen6226 yep
Pretty sure it's a Maton, Australian made brand
a inconfundivel Barnett tambem canta Cohen ...e bem
