I don't remember the conedian, but when self check started growing in popularity, he or she said, "Is Walmart giving me a paycheck? No? Then I don't ring up groceries at Walmart. " Might have been Ron White, but regardless, the line has permeated shoppers. I still hear people say that when a store person says, "Self-check is open if you want to use that."
I want to the stores to eat the cost of liabilities. Item scanning issues from self check out/ the computer should fall on the store not the consumer. Further more if I have to do the job of the store to cash me out I expect a paycheck from the store for doing their job.
How long does it take you to check out your order with a self checkout machine? Lets estimate on the high side and say it takes you 5 entire minutes, remember you can't count time waiting in line, because you would had to do that with a cashier too. Just time scanning the items. So 5 minutes, at 7.25 cents per hour, is 36 cents, would you like that in the form of a coupon for your next order or a paycheck that you have to file a income tax return on?
@@lordhosk Is it really quicker? At my local Walmart I wait 20 minutes in a line for Self Checkout and I still have to do all the work of the cashier. Not to mention the self checkout is incredibly slow and fussy .
Target stopped using them for some time. Recently (October 2024) they started bringing them up again. This resulted in longer times waiting at the checkout lanes (human and self checkout both). And I paid the same amounts for stuff I purchased. Someone try to explain how there is un upside to the consumer? And don't like contributing to wage theft or putting people out of work.
self check outs should be automatically be applying a credit of minimum wage if they want the customers to be the cashieer employees otherwise its slave labour
There might be an error in your figures. You're assuming the 3-4% shrinkage across the entire store's revenue, when it actually applies only to self-checkout transactions. In any store I've ever been in, self-checkout accounts for 25-33% of the total items checked out, since most people using the self-checkout aren't buying as much.
5 cashiers for 10 self checkouts is underestimated.. self checkouts don't go home or take breaks. you'll need approximately 1.5-2 people per day to make up the same amount of time 7 days a week., keep in mind they will typically have 2 days off per week. 53 shifts a week with the 1.5/day, that is 11 new hires or $303k estimate an additional 25% for benefits, vacation time. sick time, etc (some businesses are around 50%) 379k per year for 11 employees, however I think your discounting the efficiency of the cashier, id say a 7 for 10 ratio would be more appropriate (530k). Add in the cost of turnover, training, associated costs with management etc and your numbers will change.
@Starscreamious i worked there 20 years ago, I had benefits. The video creator also used full time as his metric. Full time employees get benefits at walmart.
@TheJefferson What percentage of employees at Walmart are allowed to be full-time? 5%? 12%? Excluding management what is the number? Over 1%? How many of those nonmanagers can afford health insurance making Walmart wages? 0%?
forget even the price of theft... if i go some where with only self check out i either leave or buy the minimum i immediately need. Give me the full treatment baggers and cashiers im more likely to do a bigger shopping spree since i feel at home and not like i work there.
I'm in retail. It's very difficult to find competent cashiers these days.

If they are too cheap to hire cashiers, then they should not expect customers to be experts at it.
Another issue is that self checkouts can be annoying for customers to use. This seems especially true at supermarkets.
It's true any place you're buying a half cart or a cart full of crap.
A problem is small supermarkets that have small self-checkout machines. These become confused if you have more than 1 bag of groceries.
If you're buying fresh produce that needs to be weighed they are a real pain in the butt.
I like to go to the regular checkout and periodically say, "Put item in bag, then scan next item." To the cashier
6:20 The only way Walmart is hiring 5 cashiers......is if i is for 5 Walmarts. LMAO

You haven't been to walmart.

i was going to say the same thing. people cant work 24 hours a day 7 days a week. employee estimates need to be double or tripled.
Yeah, this guy hasnt hired labor before. They cost way more than their hourly rate.....
Who's getting benefits at walmart? You get 20 hours a week and GTFO.

those that are stealing are just taking their wage in product instead of money haha

I am HAPPY all of them lose $$$ from self check-out. People need job !!!
If I'm checking myself out, I'm getting free stuff. End of story
