Losing my religion is not meant literally. It is a southern saying for losing ones temper.
Or losing your faith in how life is going at the moment.
To me, it was about young Men's Angst. Feeling alone with all of your feelings while listening to this song for me.

Namaste enoma. Kirti i think you are the closer with the idea of frustration. Stipe is from the “Bible bIelt” of USA, think it is about his difficulties coming out as gay to family. This song is from before he came out publicly.

I took this song to literally mean that someone is losing faith...losing their religion. Losing faith in God. I have always took this song to mean that. Of course, I suppose you could look a this song in another way [like losing your temper?]. But for me, that does not sit right.
